Rumor mill says public Windows 7 Release Candidate coming on April 10th

Ars Technica is reporting that several sources are now pointing to a likely Release Candidate build of Windows 7 being made publicly available on April 10th. While we can't attest to the probability of this occurrence... occurring on that date, they're also reporting that the development team's progress is confirmed as being on track for that date, so we'll just have to wait with breath bated to see if the unicorn (our term for the OS) appears then or not.

awesome. Can't wait!
..I still dont see the irony or the connection with the 'unicorn' analogy..
I can't wait for a multitouch Windows 7 netbook.... this one has my buck.
What a great Birthday Present!
Paul Chapel hasn't queefed here yet? Must be douching himself this weekend.
ENGADGET, you could atlease link to the DIRECT SOURCE....ars did not find this, it was www.neowin.net
Let's go to Candy Mountain, Charley!
Surely 'Phoenix' is a better link for 7. Rising from the ashes of Vista and all that.
A unicorn is just a gay horse...
...wheres the link there?
Nah guys, since Microsoft doesn't give their OS animal names like some other companies (ahem..) they've decided to do so themselves.
Rumor has it the next version of Windows will actually be called "Lipizzaner."
I have been running win 7 since it's beta release. With the exception of a few BSODs, its a very smooth operating system. It automatically located all my drivers for my hardware. They did a good job and with the final release (hopefully) later this year, I intend on switch all my puters over to win 7 (but keep my dual boot unbuntu and KDE on a couple of them).
Not to piss on the parade or anything, but I have been getting some BSOD while streaming media. Hope it's just the beta.
To ImaYam
Vistas codename used to be longhorn. Think thats what they are hinting at
rushed to public, after Vsp2 is out...
I hearby predict the rush to avoid 7 will hit and everyone will scream for Vista instead... because 7 will NEVER BE perfect out of the gate. Tons of people will gripe and moan about the new system not working right and laud how well the updated service pack on Vista is...
I have ZERO faith that Microsoft will meet these glorious expectations ( I think Obama has a better shot of meeting expectations than Microsoft does!) and their track record certainly supports my statement!
cooooollll and FIRST!!
fail
Yeaaaah, no.
Now go stand next to the fail pit, one more fail and we'll have to kick you into it.
haha, what a failure lol
First? YOU. ARE. SECOND!!!!!
He was second first.
yes, you were the first to call yourself a "fail". Many others followed.
what about rtm?
That really depends how successful the RC is. If its pretty bug free then we might only have one release candidate and see the RTM a couple months after, if some bugs pop up and multiple release candidates are needed then it will take longer.
But I'm optimistic, they only needed one Beta release after all
I'm pretty sure MS has stated that there will be only one Beta and only one RC. I'd agree with them in that thinking; the Beta is pretty darn solid.
My question is whether upgrading to the RC from the beta will remove the August 1st "expiration date" that's in place. I assume it would, and I also figure there's other ways around that, but if that's the case the upgrade would be a no brainer for me.
Phil,
The Beta is already more stable than any other OS on the market.
Can't wait for this thing to hit the streets.
@Chird
"My question is whether upgrading to the RC from the beta will remove the August 1st "expiration date"
That is what I am hoping or else many people who are using the beta as their regular OS will have to return to Vista or XP before the retail product is released late in the year.
Hard telling, but Vista and XP both had two RCs. Add to that the official line from MS that Windows 7 will ship in Fall 2009 early 2010 If you consider two RCs and a RTM with a few month interval between them and that timeline starts to make sense. The only unknown is the July 1st software assurance date. I think those started up for Vista some time in October and Vista hit RTM in January.
Vista went RTM November 8th, not January.
So when should the "finished" (pre sp1) product be ready?
I can see 7 being released around October-November or quite possibly as early as august providing there is only one RC
It's "breath bated", not breath baited. You can't go fishing with your breath.
I'd say it depends on how bad your breath is and what you're fishing for.
They're fishing for tic tacs. I'd say the wording is perfect.
Actually, in that situation it would probably be better to use "bated breath."
I eat a lot of worms so my breath would be perfect for fishing.
anyone know if they got the isight working on W7? I couldnt find any drivers so i reinstalled vista for the time being.
vistas drivers should work, they do for most things anyway
All vista drivers work with Windows 7. Install 7 check for updates. Some updates will be drivers. The only drivers that won't work are driver restricted to OS by driver programmers. E.g Belkin drivers may not work because they restrict their driver to a specific OS. I hate companies that do that.
My NAS wouldn't work. Couldn't transfer large amounts of data & kept crashing the computer. D-Link so it's not an "off brand" sort of issue.
I'm having this same problem, but this is Apple's fault, and sadly Apple can't make a driver to save its life.
Blame Apple, not Microsoft.
As noted, Apple + drivers = iFail
lol ignorant dorks. As per your misguided logical fallacies, Apple has the obligation to supply drivers for a product that is still in the beta stage? Get outta here. Apple doesn't release their drivers in beta stage either, so just as there are drivers for XP and Vista, the W7 ones will be good to go at launch day. It's hard to understand MS fanboys' readiness to hate Apple at the 1st change given.
No way! An Engadget computer has Zune software installed?!?!
is that a sin?
If' you listened to the podcasts you'd find they frequently talk about how Zune 3 is good & the Zune player isn't bad. My opinion's not quite as high but I actually do think the video organization is user friendly (Media Monkey for everything else).
If you happened to watch a tour of the Engadget team, you'd see that a physical Windows logo was nowhere to be found, only fruit.
Lots iCrap as well. QT, shiTunes, Pidgin. It's like they miss there little OSX walled sandbox so much once they're free on Windows. Not specifically Laura but those other iTarts.
Neha,
Just noticed that as well.
Keep that iCrap off of Windows 7, that is blasphemous to shovel that trash on Win 7.
Geez talk about being sore losers. The Zune tanks all on its own and some people start throwing hate at the iPods. I've played with several personal music management programs but out of the bunch iTunes is by far the best. It'll be a welcome addition to see iTunes come into W7; looking forward to it.
I thought the Mac, iPod and iPhone were all vastly superior to everything else ever created on planet Earth. Why is it then that Apple tech owner are such defensive pricks.
