ASUS W90 gaming laptop now listed on Newegg
ASUS' heavy-hitting W90Vp-X1 gaming-friendly laptop has shown up on Newegg. The 18.4-inch behemoth's sporting a 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T9600, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4870 X2, WUXGA resolution, 6GB DDR2 RAM, 320GB HDD at 7200RPM. Of course, with specs like that, you weren't expecting it to come cheap, were you? The retailer's demanding a $2,200 ransom to take it home. Admit it, you're just happy it's an ASUS machine with no "Eee" in sight.

What's up with all these computers coming out with 6GB of RAM?
It's needed because ram is becoming very cheap and apps are only demanding more and more!
You can never have enough memory!
ddr ram? seriously? i hope not...
With the i7, computers now have triple-channel memory. That's why we are seeing more and more 6GB of ram (3 x 2GB). But I don't think apply in this case since it's probably your standard dual-channel memory... ram is cheap, and there must be 3 memory slots inside this laptop.
This is 6 GB of DDR2 on a Core 2 Duo. Doesn't exactly make sense, but they probably thoght, "What the hell, it's so cheap anyway".
This would probably have a 4gb with a 2gb making it to 6gb. These new chipsets can take up to 8gb (4gb + 4gb). Also, you can cram in DDR3 rams on this one as T9600 processor would support that.
Now that is a great bang for the buck!
Those specs don't seem to be included in very many other companies for that cheap!
If only I had $2,200 that would be all mine!!!
The only thing advantageous on this is the graphics card. Other systems (Vaio AW for instance) includes blu-ray drive and tv tuner for the price.
That's what I was thinking, $2200 is very reasonable for those specs, if that's what your after.
It requires 1.21 gigawatts of power!

...and in Soviet Russia, computer buys you.
@Ross Miller
'now shipping'...seriously??
You posted the link to newegg...which shows 'Auto-notify'...means they aren't even taking orders for it. Did you even read newegg's page before posting this?
They were shipping but they ran out of stock. I have my order placed and will be shipped as soon as they have more. Some friends of mine got them off newegg last week.
Might want to look into it before you blast someone, the error could be yours.
holy hell.
a 4870x2 in a lappy
im waiting for a gtx295 now.
It's a Mobility Radeon X2. Still a decent chance at the most powerful graphics on a lappie ever, but far below desktop Radeon 4870 X2 performance.
Very impressive, noneoftheless.
^
Yep, probably 65-75% of the desktop 4870 x2. But still, that's fast enough to run most if not all games at max settings.
Asus should have made it a DDR3 instead of DD2 though.
Wait, it has no floppy drive! Deal-breaker right there.
What, no Crossfire?
what an ugly ass computer
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
I like it...black with silver accents and furturistic styling is exactly what I like.
Price is great, too.
DDR? Really?
Guys if you clicked the picture you will see that it's DDR 2 and that the amazing editors on Engadget messed up lol.
DDR???
Haha Engadget, you just want to make those who didn't click the link looks like an idiot. It clearly state 6GB DDR2.
Warning: Use on lap may lead to severe testicular damage.
Maybe you should consider wearing pants while gaming, hmm?
Actually with the new three fan cooling system, it runs really cool. Even when benchmarking.
PS. Scores 1540 in 3dMark 06 !!
Sorry, should have been 15400 lol..
It would be funny if they branded their gaming laptops Aaa or something.
I would call it the Ggg instead. Rhymes with Eee and kind of goes with Gaming right? Hopefully I didn't just give them any ideas.
Damn. Check out that bottom screen bezel.
@Jeff: yeah why not. they can even do Uuu or Ooo... but can't do iII, its already patented.... :D
better than that apple machine you bought for 5500+
damn seriously.
Depends what you bought it for. The Asus is very powerful but it's also a brick and not exactly practical as a mobile system (anyone want to guess the battery life?). Personally, I have no interest in gaming but do need something that will process RAW photographic files well when I'm out in the field and also in the office. Given this an Apple laptop is a better fit for what I do. If you are into gaming then by all means buy the Asus and I won't think any less of you.
Buy based on your own requirements. Anyone who tells you that your decision is wrong probably doesn't know what you want or, worse, has their own agenda.
Oh, wow!!! Now THAT is awesome!!!! I wonder, though, will laptops be able to use Intel's i7 and i7 Extreme Edition? I hope!

WOW
"with specs like that, you weren't expecting it to come cheap"...
ASUS:
-2200$
-18inches
-2.8ghz
-HD 4870x2 (wouaaaah)
-6gb
-320gb 7200rpm
Macbook Pro:
-2800$
17inches
2.6ghz
9600M (hahaha)
4gb
320gb 5400rpm
This is 600$ less than the macbook but with way better spec... How come you say its expensive?
I call it the best laptop I have ever see! And at a very good price.
It's called expensive because it's over $2000. I don't think you can call it cheap because there are other laptops more expensive.
As I noted in an earlier comment, this is a gaming laptop that is hardly comparable to the MacBook Pro since they both target totally different markets. The Asus delivers raw power but it does so in a package that is almost twice as heavy and over twice as thick. Put another way, this machine is only portable if you bring a forklift truck with you. Whether that is important to you depends on your own requirements. However, I personally would not choose this as a laptop because it would be totally impractical for a mobile user.
@Kelmon
"Put another way, this machine is only portable if you bring a forklift truck with you. "
When are people going to give this line a freaking break.. Eat your damn Wheaties and quit crying about 6-7ilbs... Bunch of damn pussy's running around now days... Its a laptop... no matter how you spin it its MUCH more portable to take this thing where you want than your Dell/Alienwar/Homebrew PC, 24" widescreen monitor and a gaggle of cables.
Hey, 6lb is OK for a 17" laptop but damned near double that is not. If you don't expect to be carrying it around with you all day, along with the rest of your kit, then maybe 12lb is OK but not for me. Why carry the weight when you don't have to?
So, in answer to your question, this "line" is never going to get "a freaking break". There's no need to cry since I won't be buying something this heavy when there are better options.
That price is not bad at all comapred to the prices of other gaming laptops, many that actually cost more and have worse performance. Great job Asus!!
A worthy successor to the HP's original HDX: the current HDX18 is severely lacking in performance.
I think this is one of the laptops people will point out is cheaper and slightly more powerful than the 17" MacBook Pro I am writing this post on right now.
Apart from battery life I am noticing one big difference - that thing is 11.5 pounds! The MBP is 6.6....
My point is not that this is bad - it's just a very different thing for very different use. Can't be compared.
didn't you just compare them? :P
Doh!
Crysis, anyone?
NO DDR3
NO LED LCD
NO Quad Core
Dam, so close.
It also lack bluray drive which is silly.... this laptop got amazing sound system and 1920x1080p LCD.......
Asus add Quad+Blu ray and for only 1999$ and i "Might" get one
I'm waiting for the New Quad S series for laptops~
