The iPhone Dev Team hackers have been teasing their redsn0w iPod touch jailbreak for what seems like forever now, but those you tired of waiting might want to check out the just-released NitroKey Slipstream. The $15 software does its thing on the 2.2.1 firmware, and automatically installs Cydia for all that jailbroken app action you crave -- including the new
paid apps store. Windows-only for now, but there's apparently a Mac version in the works -- hopefully we'll see the free redsn0w take the lead back on that front. Report back if you take the plunge, would you?
First!!! nah jk
but i wish i had a itouch to do this on.
Hey, the forgot to tag this article with "BREAKING"
get it? jail Breaking?
AHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!
Dear Igoon,
Your maniacal laughter seriously scares me. It conjures up images of a evil robot overlord laughing at my comical humanity...
Since I know you are an impostor, and are not in fact an evil robot, I am requesting that you cease all maniacal laughter in the future.
Sincerely,
Everyone on Engadget.
Seconded.

DAMN...You FAILED harder than I ever have on Engadget with that post.
You're suppossed to say something like:
The most powerful important PMP finaly gets cracked... or something to glorify the apple.
Don't kid yourself Flashpoint. You're fails are always Epic!
so is the ipod touch 2g the best pmp of all times or what.,.,.,
I'd say the iPod touch in general. I've had my 1st gen for almost a year and a half now and I can't say I remember ever having a problem with it and I love it
give it bluetooth, and yes.
Give it :
- bluetooth
- higher resolution
- expandable storage
- microusb charging/syncing port
- the freedom to install anything you want, customize it in any way you want without having to jailbreak it
- copy and paste
- removable battery
- mass storage support
- no obligatory sync with crappy itunes
- multitasking (without jailbreaking!)
- better flash support and a better safari (open in a new tab feature, copy and paste, a real full browser for pete's sake)
- better battery life (or at least constant with all those features added)
- cheaper!
and you got the best pmp in my opinion. I love my ipod touch 2g but those issues would make it almost perfect.
@loginatnine,
I know you are probably using this also, I hate my iPod Touch for this exact reason (just wish I didn't have to pay for secondary applications to not deal with their virus of an application). But I would still love to be able to drag song off of my device.

Personally, if they somehow built a phone into it, then I'd buy one. The TouchPhone, or something like that.
@loginatnine
You know what they won't give it/make it have?
- bluetooth
- higher resolution
- expandable storage
- microusb charging/syncing port
- the freedom to install anything you want, customize it in any way you want without having to jailbreak it
- copy and paste
- removable battery
- mass storage support
- no obligatory sync with crappy itunes
- multitasking (without jailbreaking!)
- better flash support and a better safari (open in a new tab feature, copy and paste, a real full browser for pete's sake)
- better battery life (or at least constant with all those features added)
- cheaper!
The annoying thing with Bluetooth is that they put in that special Nike chip for measuring whatever the hell it measures in Nike shoes.
That chip is a mutated Bluetooth chip. They could have put something more generic, and more useful, but they went with the cross promotion thing that's useless to most people.
This might sound bizarre, but my personal favorite of all the music players I've tried is the Zune 16. It's got all the important music player features nailed with great desktop software and the ability to stream full albums from the Zune Marketplace over WiFi if you've got the Zune Pass.
The iPod Touch has a lot of cool features too, like a last.fm app, but it just seems like overkill for a music player to me and I tend to like my music players to be really straightforward (which is why I loved the old black and white iPods before they got all complicated).
well son of a vondruke, it's a beautiful day in the neighborhood
Is that an actual curse word?!?
W00T!
$15...no.
I have my iphone 3G unlocked, and honestly all I use is the five icon dock, SBSettings, and iRealSMS. I don't think it's really worth paying 15 dollars to jailbreak an iPod. Just my own personal opinion
none of those things you mentioned is related to your iphone being unlocked. just fyi
unlocked != jailbroken - an unlocked iPhone can be used on networks other than it was sold for, while jailbroken is about running non-Apple approved code.
First discovered by Chronic Dev & Co, then leaked to NitroKey people. Please don't pay for it.
momma said knock you out
I'd rather help people JB their iPods for free than let these people charge $15 for it. Seriously, its not hard. You basically have to know how to put your iPod into DFU mode and copy and paste code into Terminal.
Who said it's from iPhone Dev Team? They donot even accept donations.
How would they SELL hacks?
Who said reading is not for losers?
Looks like the Nitro team is here for some advertising!
I used redsn0w102 along with a youtube vid to jailbreak mine. You are missing a LOT of info here - the jb is semi tethered; it needs to be attached to a computer or dongle (nitrokey!!) when booting to work. That's what they are selling!
Incorrect, the NitroKey Slipstream does not require a dongle or any other device. It's untethered.
Incorrect, I second Guess_Who
Man, I hope the dev team gets *pissed* over someone charging money to jailbreak the device, because that's some serious bullcrap.
Is this a permanent fix or do you still have to plug it into your computer to turn it on?
Time to pick one up? Not really, since the Sony and Samsung players Pwn this to hell and back
11 MINUTES
The time it takes the average engadget commenter to complain about shameless advertising. I kid, of course. :P
I've seen some videos of this working, and loading "homebrew" apps.... But does this dongle have to be attached after install?
the videos I've seen keep it on, which sort of impairs it from using either mac approved accessories or stuff like the gps module.
If it was a temp attachment or bootup only (like the semi tethered) it wouldn't be too bad and save yourself from having osx/pc around
I hope someone posts here after testing and verifying, or engadget buys one to test.
If there's a contest for one, I wanna be first.. PLEASE!

My bad...ignore my previous comment, this appears to be untethered. Not sure i believe it yet! Anyone done it?
you DO need the dongle
http://www.zodttd.com/boards/lofiversion/index.php/t6340.html
it works but its not unteathered as you just replace the pc with a little plastic dongle
$15 for a piece of plastic and the DEV TEAMS hard work
No it's the real thing, untethetered. Your link points toward the nitrokey but this is nitro slipstream. The dev team will release a free untethered jailbreak sometimes soon so don't buy this!
The newest NitroKey jailbreak does not require a dongle. The previous version did.
It's already released :

Enjoy!
nitro key = dongle, nitro slipstream = dongle free software jb, just wait for someone to crack their lame paid software and we all will get free jb, case closed.
k, i'm very happy, but look at chronic dev's site. they say they already have it i think. i'm not really sure.can someone clarify when the free 2g jailbreak will be released, like by chronic or iphone dev? sounds like nitrokey just stole their information and charge people for it so i dont want to support them, and dont want to pay 15$. so please someone explain everything thats happening pleease. thanks though.
http://www.ipodtouchfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=155770
just wait a couple of days for user friendly GUI and tutorials!
or hours
F*** NitroKey now the new iphone will be even harder to jailbreak.
**FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS THE FULL JAILBREAK DO NOT BUY THIS**
go to http://www.ipodtouchfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=155770 or just wait for the updated pwnage tool.
NitroKey was not the first to have a full jailbreak, just the first to release it (mainly using dev team code).
Yay for freeness
looks like zibri is doing it again but with the itouch ahahha the graphics design for the nitro site and the www.xiphone.org site are the same
its legit... its not dev team... its a real hack :] but zorro jus needs the money this time around instead of handing out free candy
then again a new iphone might be next ^_^
if the new iphone isnt badass.... its all downhill with the pre ! ;]
hey guys....look at the ipod on the right, at the reflection on the back...
where the hell is that coming from???
i jailbroke my ipod touch 2g last month O.o
