Well, that didn't take long -- hot on the heels of the $15
NitroKey Slipstream iPod touch 2G jailbreak, the Dev Team's released their free version. Apparently they'd been hoping to keep the jailbreak-enabling security hole a secret until the next version of the iPhone came out so Apple wouldn't be able to fix the flaw, but NitroKey is apparently based on their code and they didn't want people paying to use it. It's not all packaged up into PwnageTool or QuickPwn just yet, but it should be soon, and there are options for the impatient -- hit the read link for more.
Glad they released it, hate it when people try to make a profit based off someone else's code...you should at least ask first.
couldn't agree more. Freaking greedy bastards.
You don't have to ask if it's open source.
That's not entirely true. Depending on the license used, it may not be legal to charge for that code. The GPL allows users to change code and charge for the revisions but the Creative Commons licenses do not allow that. I don't know what license the Dev-Team uses or if they even have one, but I do know they get awfully angry when people charge for their code, like what happened with "'Jody Sanders' of the West Midlands, UK"
Ha! Finally got to press that - button =:)
The code that NitroKey uses isnt based upon the Dev teams code...It IS the Dev teams code. They stole it and are selling it so it forced the Dev team to release there code at like 10 last night! People need to stop stealing the Dev teams work they do it all for free when tons fpeople would gladly pay for it from THEM not some other company that steals work.
It isn't stealing if a value wasn't placed on it. Dev Team left it open for all. That's the crux of open source coding.
Someone will always make a profit off your code if it is good.
Well it's not right to take Open source code, then sell it. It should have been free.
I was under the impression that if code is open source it cannot be sold.
"It isn't stealing if a value wasn't placed on it. Dev Team left it open for all. That's the crux of open source coding."
Except it wasn't open for all, they hadn't released it. They were holding onto it in case the next iPhone used the same protection as the iPod touch 2G, so they could have a jailbreak method already prepared. NitroKey somehow got ahold of the dev team's code without their permission.
some people need to understand that hybrid (chronicdev+iphonedev) team kept this in the dark, and DID NOT, release it. it was a totally new exploit that took a month of intensive development to get even to working standards, let alone production standards. somehow, it was leaked to NitroKey, and they started selling it for $15 a pop. Interestingly, they have no idea how the exploit truely works and their implementation basically "works", but is extremely sloppy.
Well well doesnt that suck, just because someone was in it to make a quick buck it means that iPhone 3rd G users will have to wait significantly longer for their fix.
love that button !
hey kid, get help
Hel's comment made me laugh out loud in a silent room
chronic dev & co, with some help by a few dev team members. kthxbai
I loled at this, the rest of you have no sense of humor
I'd use it if I ha done.
This really sucks because now that they have released the code, it will just get patched by Apple during the next update, which means even longer people are going to have to wait before being able to apply the firmware or wait for another jailbreak after they do. Greed is the ultimate evil, folks.
It isn't greed dumbass. It's business.
People don't make products to feel good about themselves.
Read the dev-team blog....
"...a fatal flaw in its bootrom that means you will always be able to pwn these devices no matter what firmware updates come along."
Apple can't fix the hole with firmware updates. They were holding on to the hole so Apple couldn't implement a hardware re-design to fix the hole in next generation hardware.
It's greed because they didn't make the product did they? I was talking about NitroKey forcing the dev teams hand in this.
@ Jimmy
Didn't know that. Thanks!
There is already a GUI patcher that allows you to jailbreak your ipod touch G2, it called Quickfreedom
For some people saying poopoo and peepee = comedy.
About god damn time!
Can someone explain to me why it takes so much longer to jailbreak a Touch than it does the iPhone? Or am I just being ignorant here? Thanks.
bootrom signature checks the first stage bootlaoder, requiring a more complicated exploit than the previous devices required
... just to spam his inbox
and another......
and one more.
anyone know if the process of jb'ing is reversible.. im not sure i will use the "new feature set" all that often, plus i imagine you'd want to reverse if sending your ipod 2g in for warranty work?
Yess!
I wanna spam it too!
Does anyone know if I can use my AppStore paid Apps on a Jailbroken iPod aswell? This is crucial for me jailbreaking or not. I love the extra features but I already bought quite some Apps in the store so it would be a pitty not to be able to use them anymore.. Does anyone know ?
yes you can
wow. why would you ask such a question? that should be a no brainer...
Wow! It's not! If you patch the iRiver H320 it looses its DRM capability irreversably, you can't patch back. Who knows what kind of protection apple uses for paid apps lol. If you got money to burn, go ahead, but I'd much rather ask first a stupid question then looses 50$ worth of paid software forever.
What a stupid answer youra was..
Please spam me.
It makes me look like I have friends when I show people my inbox.
I read the story above at the same time and read this is iPod Shuffle 2G Jailbreak, and I was like....what the fuck?! :D
I've just bought a 2g iPod touch and I don't really see what advantage jailbreaking it gives me. What makes it worthwhile? And I know this has been asked but will my paid App Store apps still work once I jailbreak?
they will until you update your software. then you have a brick
@Pingles: So what? Life is much funnier when you like poopoo and peepee jokes. ps. I just shat myself reading this post, good thing I wear 'Oops I Crapped My Pants.'
took them long enough! I''ve been waiting like 5 months!
Okay, I laughed at the first guy. But I'm on minute 40 of an IT discovery call and needed a lol.
Spam, yum yum
GJ Dev team, first yelloSno then redSno, so after they've done working on the QuickPwn or Pwnage version, they should get us copy & paste, or include it in one of the jailbroken apps or sumthin
chronic dev code plus one member of dev team, kthx
I knew that only one day after finally giving in and doing a tethered jailbreak of my iTouch, the untethered jailbreak would be released. Ugh.
I NEED A VISION
