Leica rolls out truly special Special Edition white M8 digicam

Seems like Special Edition white digital cameras are quickly becoming a trend, and one that we'll freely admit to being fans of. The Leica M8 has gotten a fresh coat of paint (as you can see above) and it's looking pretty good. We're not hearing many details yet -- no release date or price -- but don't expect it to be cheap. The wild stuff never is.

Hey look! It's white!
And not made by Apple! o_O OMG!
Racist bastard!!!
When is that Olympus retro 4/3 camera coming to market?
As much as I would love to know that as well, what does it have to do with this?
holy shit boner jammzzzz
That's what she said
Did Leica knock off Coca-Cola's logo?
wow im lovin the white! Gotta classy/sexy feel to it
This looks like $10,000 for the body!
I don't see Apple logo...
Woah, is that a detachable lens? This looks more point-and-shooty than SLR... but then I did notice the hotshoe for an external flash. Doesn't the Canon G-series have a hotshoe, too? What kind of lenses does this puppy take (Leica, of course, but it doesn't look like a standard mount)?
yes, canon g series do have hot shoots
shoes*
Detachable lens, like the normal M8. It uses the Leica M mount introduced 50 years ago.
Sir, here is a check with my name on it. Write down any number on this piece of paper, and I will pay it.
You gotta put on some white/black leather gloves when you use this baby. Else, it'd look bad once is gets dirty.
If you can afford this camera, then you can afford to have your butler on hand at all times to keep it clean.
Ooooooooh! Do want!
Oh look, a Leica special edition, and we'll charge 1million for it! Just being sarcastic... it's another Leica that I can't afford... It almost feels like I will never be able to buy a Leica...
You could always get one of the high-end Panasonic P&S cameras. They all use true Leica lenses. In fact, the FZ30 was so nice that Leica later rebadged it as one of their own and charged double the price.
omg...nice.
that is all.
SOO CUTE! I want one, I really love that old school look
hahaha an iLecia. Never would have imagined...
Storm Trooper cam.
leica has knack for making their cameras look ancient.
nothings against their performance, of course, which i've heard is stellar. just sayin'.
leica has knack for making their cameras look _timeless_ much in the way that a Rolex GMT Master made in 1960 looks just like one made in 2009. No need to change the design. Newer isn't always better. Same reason that Apple didn't need to make radical changes to the MacBook Pros: There are only so many ways to configure a slab of metal and plastic...
I love Leica's industrial design.
@craig
touche, sir!
+1
I should also mention that I can in no way afford one...
Not impressed. There was a time you paid a lot more for Leica, but you got a lot more -lens quality and durability. These days, lens quality is superb for even affordable cameras, and cameras will outlast the technological pace of change, so you know it doesn't matter that your camera survives five or fifty years. It's going to be obsolete by then.
This isn't just another cookie cutter model dressed up in luxurious Apple white priced out of your reach. Your own camera breaks in less than a year, requiring factory service at your own expense. This camera takes the blunt trauma and keeps clicking.
Please read a proper Leica M8 review before you post again.
Your an idiot.
The M8 has indeed been bagged by alot of professional photojournalists. Their main complaint, apart from image quality problems and the large crop factor, is that the control layout just isn't that well designed. It's quite easy to bump the mode dial into self-timer and end up not getting the shot when you raise the camera to use it. The solution- gaffa tape. There was a time when Leicas were field tested by pros before they went into production, but less so with the M8 it seems. I think Leica look at M8 purchasers as incredibly rich unpaid beta testers.
Who cares if it's "obsolete"? This isn't a PC... It doesn't have to run the latest and greatest games!
I hate it. White cameras are for sissies.
/drool
I love Leica...
Wow I've never seen the M8 before so I decided to see how much they were.
$3,500 for the regular black and silver M8.1. I can just imagine the price of this white one
Somehow that brings to my mind movie Spaceballs.
Could be it's just me.
Ugliest Camera Ever. Sure it has great performance. but Damn is it UGLY. Looks like those old disposable cameras, but metal instead of plastic. Lenses look sweet though. Least you won't have to worry about non photographers stealing it form you.
There are many, including myself, who can only come to the conclusion that you have no taste.
I wish I never saw this...
Ok had to come back for one more look... God that thing is pure perfection...
god i love the way leicas look. i wish there was a cheaper manufacturer doing the vintage-style designs on their digitals.
Folks, it's US$3,995 for the body only for the silver version. (And yes, it uses Leica M lens system).

Does it come with matching gloves?
I love the M8, one of the most enjoyable cameras I've ever had the privilege of shooting with. And Leica M lenses are amazing (Noctilux 50mm f/1.0, anyone? I repeat 1.0!!!!), but....
I'm still waiting for them to update the now 3 year old CCD sensor with something that can do better at 6400ISO, and improve the IR filter on the sensor so you don't need a hot mirror on the lens.
I'll wait for the $300 Lumix version, thank you.
There won't be a Lumix version. That's only when Leica rebadges Panasonic products. The M series is one of the few products Leica manufactures themselves.
