Nikon's D5000 DSLR gets hands-on treatment
Now that you've seen press shots, early previews, sample images and enough text surrounding the D5000 to make your eyes ache, why not feast those weary retinas on something a bit less stressful? PhotographyBLOG has a beautiful hands-on gallery up of Nikon's newest mid-range DSLR from the company's UK press event, and all the fun is tucked away in the read link below. Give it a visit, won't you?

Nice, that was quick.
I've seen this thing at the top of the page over the last 24 hours every time I came to Engadget... Is this an Apple product in disguise, or are you guys finally psyched about another company?
please don't feed the trolls :)
Test
You fail.
I agree, there is too much coverage. I would like to see one for the T1i, which is in my opinion, better than the D5000 due to it's 1080p full HD recording capability. Plus, Canon is the king of low noise, and they have cameras and lenses used by the pros, unlike Nikons.
Pros don't use Nikons? What colour is the sky on your planet?
Hahaha Troll Bait looks so tempting this early in the AM. But I just had an egg mcmuffin - i think i will pass.
1080p at 20fps, don't forget.
If we're talking about 'pro' photographers (some of whom definitely do shoot with Nikon cameras), how many pros do you know that shoot video on an SLR?
Cameras are all much of a muchness, just pick one that feels nice in your hand with a GUI you like. There's no such thing as a bad camera anymore.
The T1i gets absolutely crushed by the D90, which makes sense, but it should have put up a better fight:

Now the ultimate review will be this one against the T1i. Something tells me the Nikon might still come out ahead, due to the terrible limitations of the T1i outlined in the article.
@Ruben
What exactly your point in compareing two cameras, when one costs almost twice as much as the other?
@Ruben
Based on body price the Nikon D90 should rather be compared to the Canon 40D
Base on body + kit lens price, the Canon T1i is more comparable to the Nikon D60.
It's like considering a Canon 5D mk2 to a Nikon D40, doesn't make sense, if that's your price range then compare with the Nikon D700.
cheaper?
One question... who was the knuckle head that placed the actuating display hinged on the bottom?!? Why not on the side where it might actually be of use when, I don't know, one a tripod for one.
Yup. This is a half-arsed camera. I'm amazed that they can make this crap and sell it.
Actually the bottom-swivel is more versatile IMO. That and a side-swivel would require them to relocate or remove the hard buttons.
I actually came to the comments to get info on this. Does it interfere with tripods? All tripods, or just some? It looks like it might clear if the head was small enough, but I've never tried to use an articulating display on a tripod.
Sorta tempted to replace my D50; the low light performance leaves a lot to be desired... But I should really spend my $ on better glass.
overexposed.
Use exposure compensation, and shoot raw, then you can fix the exposure easier.
No it's not. If anything it's underexposed. Or would you rather see a nicely exposed blurry city scape and all-black camera outline. :)
What it needs is some fill light.
THey should have done some exposure bracketing and just made it HDR.
The correct term is improperly exposed here - either take 2 shots, one exposing for the sky and 1 exposing for the camera and hand, or use a fill-flash.
Either way, I duly note the irony of a failphoto being used in a photo post.
It's just another nice option on the table. Who doesn't like to have options. Both Canon and Nikon are great options. A lot of pros use Canon, and a lot of pros use Nikon. I like to have options!
I'm a Nikon D90 shooter, and I'm happy with my kit.
I'm pretty sure Canon shooters are happy with their kits too!
But, where is my Nikon D400??? or D300x
I really just want Canon to work out the frame rate issue on the T1i. I've been trying to spend this $600-$800 on a DSLR w/ video for the past 12 months!
Question: Are there any DSLR's w/ video (something comparable to the above) out there that I can use my old Pentax SLR lenses on via adapter or otherwise?
Engadget: "Nikon's newest mid-range DSLR"
This camera is actually entry-level and replaces the D60. There is no dSLR that slots in below this camera.
Price wise, this is still a mid-range DSLR, being only slightly cheaper than a D90, and $400 more than a D40 kit
In terms of price:
D40 < D60 < D5000 < D90.
It seems to be about 200 dollars between each camera.
My retinas should relax from this?
The thing is hideous!
What is a nice looking DSLR?
They are function well over form.
Lumix L1.
The specs suck. The viewfinder is tiny. It is over 2 years old. It is noisier than contemporary cams. It is heavy. It is large. The reviews weren't exactly raving. But it is a very nice camera to take pictures with. Mostly due to the 14-50 Leica branded kitlens, but also because the cam behaves exactly as you expect it to. No forgetting which dial to turn, no multiuse buttons etcetera. It is pick up and use, and instantly very rewarding. Also, the dynamic range is really very good with a lot of shadow and highlight reserves, even in jpeg. Sadly, the cam was misunderstood and there won't be a L2.
how does this compare to the d80 in going to get an DSLR and i'm choosing between the d80 and this
do NOT get d80... d80 is way too old... it has a much noisier sensor.... Why are you even mentioning such an old camera... I don't think you want to get a CCD slr these days, when CMOS is clearly superior... And the jump in Nikon image quality from CCD to CMOS as far as ISO performance was unbelievable. And the sensor type was a clear advantage that Canons had over Nikon for a long time (at least as far as ISO performance). So in short, NO - get the new camera. Cheaper entry cameras produce better image quality than mid-grade 2-year old cameras... it's just the way of the progress.
I'd save for the D90 instead
I'm kinda wondering where that guy's standing, it looks like the edge of a building...I wouldn't be holding an $850 camera with one hand over the side of a very tall building (or any building for that matter...)
I don't know what to think about this camera. It's not really groundbreaking in any aspect (unless I'm missing something)... I want to see Nikon make something crazy like EVF's, built-in GPS, 20 stop dynamic range, hover jets (goodbye tripods!), and noise at 64K ISO = noise at 50 ISO.
Oh well. =/
