We'd kinda gotten used to the cold, hard reality of being teased with the promise of a
Cupcake build on our retail G1s out in some distant, nondeterministic future that we may or may not be a part of -- but all of a sudden, it looks like we might've vaulted right past Cupcake. We've now received multiple tips this evening suggesting that T-Mobile may have started distributing
Android 1.5 as an over-the-air update to
G1 owners, which would bring customizable widgets, messaging enhancements, virtual keyboards, and UI tweaks (among many other goodies) to an eager public. Anyone out there seeing this?

Yup, got mine a few hours ago. While i am happy i finally got my official update, there are still some things, i wish i had from the hykuro H builds.

I wish it had the option to choose between the virtual qwerty keyboard and virtual t9 number pad. there was also a predictive number pad that helped find contacts faster when dialing. it was very similar to what windows mobile phones do from the dialing screen.

I tried the G build and i liked it, but if i remember correctly, it was missing those features as well. Thats why i stuck with the h builds. i just wish there was a way to get a 100% stable version of that build. Unfortunately, it was a little slow and shaky with some of my apps and the camera.
The virtual keyboard is just an API, what you have in the new build is the default one included with the system. Anybody can release a new keyboard on the Market that has all the features you want. I'd suggest either being patient or firing up the SDK and getting one going yourself.

I really hoped it was 1.5
So I´ll keep waiting.
Hopefully as with the last update you'll be able to download it on your computer and transfer it to the phone. I won't get it OTA because I don't have a data plan. :(

Because here in Minneapolis, the entire city has wifi. I live in the city, so no need for a data plan when I already have wifi anywhere I go. (for a fee of course, but it's also are home internet connection.)

They have been sharing the Cupcake for weeks by OTA, but nobody has noticed because everybody has a custom ROM blocking the update ;)
Great if they finally get it out though, maybe in the coming weeks even I will have the same update installed for over 3 days.

I have the same, also an imported G1 in Switzerland, and the RC33 OTA update went through without any trouble. Why do you think this one won't?

Yah.. I was on the phone with the G1 techs and they said my battery should last 8 hours of online 3G use.. I was like... Oh which battery do you have?? The Fuel Cell?? So they sent me a new one.. At least now I have 2 batteries so I don't run out.. Even a full day at Disneyland I was fine with the 2 batteries... )-;
People want their phones to be tiny and their battery to last forever... Battery life is based on size... if you want more battery life buy a BIGGER battery and stop complaining. Not everybody wants a laptop battery strapped to their brick of a phone.
Oh shit, now I'll be staying up all night trying everything on my G1 to get the update.
Some apps like toggle settings and steel don't work with the cupcake update.
Aye, I hope the guy who makes Steel updates it to remove his own onscreen keyboard, because I really like Steel for many other reasons, too.

Anyone going to post the url for the OTA so others can start jumping on it? You can find it in the logcat output "adb logcat" and search for a url "http" should be good enough.
I'll post it when I get it (for the UK version at least), but hopefully someone will beat me to it...
