Microsoft almost definitely planning motion-sensing 3D camera for Xbox 360
If shots from the barrel of Mr. Blurrycam just aren't legitimate enough for you, how's about corroboration from The Wall Street Journal? A breaking report has confirmed that Microsoft is indeed "developing a new videocamera for its Xbox 360 videogame console that will allow players to control games with the movement of their bodies," or at least that's the good word from the all-too-supposing "people familiar with the matter." It's noted that unlike Nintendo's Wii, the Microsoft camera won't require gamers to "hold any hardware in their hands to control in-game action," but in the same vein as The Big N, it seems as if the device will debut at E3 only to sit around in a lab for a year before shipping to consumers. Boo.

Sony's patent that was shown a week or so ago showed something similar but used the PS Eye along with a PS3mote. E3 shall be interesting. nice rug btw
I think the rug looks a bit 80's myself.
looks like clown barf to me.
I don't even think clown barf would show on a rug that hideous.
They should make mo-cap wrist and ankle bracelets instead...
AHEM *EYE-TOY* AHEM.
3D !
camera that tracks body movements, is eye-toy.
just microsoft feels like updating it with 3D apparently. meaning it probably could be different anyway from this information engadget has.
HOW DO YOU HAVE THAT NAME?!
He typed Anthony.
The description in WSJ sounds exactly like the Eye Toy, which wasn't exactly a game changer when it came out. Believe me or not, but I've actually used the new motion controller that has been rumored to be coming from Sony. The motion controller is real, but I'm not sure Sony has even signed on to release it as an accessories for the PS3. It really is something neat, though.
You know, I want to believe you...but being the internet and all, it's hard to. Can you reveal more about it? What makes it so cool? How does it work?
"The Microsoft camera won't require gamers to "hold any hardware in their hands to control in-game action,"
I'm not sure why this is being touted as a positive. What this means is the camera will only be useful for broad actions in very specific circumstance. I'm not saying it won't have some useful applications, but it will restrict what it can be used for--how else would you move an avatar in a virtual world, for instance?
All I have to say is " Where are the games that were promised for the 360 webcam to begin with..?"
The only motion game that I know of was the one that came with the cam.. I hope they let us trade in our old cams. Otherwise Ive got another POS that will be no use for me if they do release a new one..
Come on MS.. work with what you got..
Not impressive. Playstation Eye says hello, and has been here for some time.
Definitely maybe. I'd hate to roll around during a game of COD.
Microsoft: The Freedom To Innovate (TM)
(Or Copy Our Competitors, Whichever Is Easier (R))
Erm, they already have camera controlled game called TotemBall. This isn't a new concept, let alone for Xbox.
Exactly.. And where are the games they promised to follow.. MS needs to give up on motion controls, atleast this time around.. Leave it for the 720 or whatever they call it..
Ugh. Wasnt the Vision Camera supposed to be the Eye Toy competetor? WTF happened? One game used it for that function. ONE GAME. And it was TERRIBLE.
I liked to play anti-grav on my ps2 eye-toy, but I have misplaced it somewhere, that was a fun game...
I hope it's just rumors for both (Sony & MS). I hate my Wii because of the motion controls. I don't want standing up to play games, If they release those cameras or whatever, developers will start working on games for those things, which with this time they could be working on a real game. I know in the future we'll see those sh** on every console, I just hope the future isn't now.
I have close to 40 games, and I don't have to stand to play any of my games... I don't even have to lift my arms.
NOT eyetoy, this completely 1ups eyetoy and a nunchuck

So whats with this greenscreen tracker point stand in TV i keep seeing posted allot :D
Am I the only one thats noticed because im an effects artist?
My theory is that Microsoft will announce true 3D (for one user) via head tracking as per Johnny Lee's Wii-mote hack. If they announced that with support for the option coming in all upcoming major 3D releases Sony will be freaking out. It could possibly be retrofitted to some big previous releases too like Modern Warfare, Gear of War 2, Halo 3, etc,
In case you've never seen it in action here is Johnny's demo video on YouTube.

The effect is pretty amazing and it doesn't have to be about people jumping around the living room, just the added realism that makes the view really look 3D. I'm really surprised that it has been so long since Johnny demoed this and it HASN'T been announced by one or more console makers.
To clarify my comment above, "(for one user)", the head tracking only creates a realistic view for the one being tracked. You could play split screen and have multiple people tracked, each with their own true 3D view. The problem is the view will look very strange to any spectators.
that'd be pretty neat since i heard they (MS) hired the guy who made that. with the new camera that can handle depth now and his software, along side with glasses it would be killer.
I thought Microsoft was better than Sony?
Money talks
It was coded newton
That's pretty cool, but welcome to last year. These guys are already there: http://www.mgestyk.com
Yet another reason why these E3 keynotes can't come fast enough - there's going to be big news over the next 2 days, I can feel it!
