Nokia's N97 unboxed on video -- somehow, someway
We always heard that where there is a will, there is a way. Said mantra has never been more exemplified than in the video past the break, as someone halfway across this great planet has seemingly procured what could be the very first shipping N97. Still, we'd like to point out a few things here: first, Nokia has yet to officially ship these things, so there's at least a sliver of a chance that by mashing play, you'll actually be watching a KIRF unboxing, and in turn, supporting terrorism. Also, we can't understand a word the unboxer says, so again, he could be explaining just how elaborate of a fake it is, and we'd never know. Needless to say, you should definitely proceed at your own risk.
Update: Seems another fellow got one, and he's got pictures to prove it.

I always loved Nokia, like the white!
TT @ May 31st 2009 1:22PM
Just responding to this one so you can see my post.
Wasn't there that design your widget competition from Nokia that would guarantee you an early unit?
namtastic @ May 31st 2009 2:46PM
Not fake at all: http://vimeo.com/4898966
rento @ May 31st 2009 3:32PM

Looking sweet! Can't wait to buy one!
Aaron @ May 31st 2009 12:30PM
If it's a fake, it's a very good fake.
superhobo @ May 31st 2009 12:36PM
Indeed, some of those KIRFing terrorists even dare to besmirch the name of the mighty Apple.
That's what Amercuh needs to take care of.

It isn't a fake. This video come from the blog-n97.fr ans the man speak french.
Samboini @ May 31st 2009 3:56PM
He should lrn2english!
Rik @ May 31st 2009 5:09PM
Come on Engadget, my French isn't that good but I could understand most of what he was saying. Interesting btw. that they put in an adapter so that the N97 (charged by microUSB) so that it can also be charged by a classic nokia charger.
bandora @ Jun 2nd 2009 6:15PM
@Samboini: You got to understand that not all people in the world speaks english especially when they are in their own country.. You need to learn other languages.
john @ May 31st 2009 12:40PM
He's just saying, "This is a box. The box is black. This is the charger. The charger is huge!. These are standard headphones. Etc, etc." He didn't say anything of substance.
ruffleader @ May 31st 2009 12:42PM
Full video it seems to be here

Just an observation, the plug socket is definetly not French, its UK style.
hal @ May 31st 2009 12:44PM
thats the plug on the wall not the one on the charger.
Rob @ May 31st 2009 12:49PM
Defo not UK...
TheSailor @ May 31st 2009 1:02PM
It's rather funny, because I live in Denmark, we have the same plug standard as in France, and that looks exactly like the plug on the charger for my phone - which doesn't fit in a UK-plug!
Ahmad @ May 31st 2009 1:25PM
He says it's an "arabic charger" I've been to northern africa and they have that type of plug. It's popular in parts of east europe and middle east too.
baG @ May 31st 2009 3:56PM
This was done in London, so yes, English plug with adaptator (this is my mac book pro's charger, not the one for the N97, that you see in the background, also, this is USA to FR > UK...yeah)
hal @ May 31st 2009 6:12PM
Thanks for clearing that up, now I don't look like a complete idiot. :-)
CambO @ May 31st 2009 12:43PM

Bo Vaughn @ May 31st 2009 1:04PM
It really is 70 minutes! Daaaang...
Ben @ May 31st 2009 12:53PM
I speak French fluently and he is saying that it is a REAL N97 and just going through the parts included in the box.
If ever you need translations from French, e-mail me!

skyblaze @ May 31st 2009 12:44PM
im pretty they're gonna be shipped next week... just this friday they (finally) took the money out my account from my preorder... and sent a second confirmation email... that might mean nothing at all... but almost every other time i preordered stuff, funds never got deducted till a day or two before the item actually shipped. just some cautious optimism
either way: skyblaze is excited as hell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Malikye @ May 31st 2009 12:47PM
skyblaze,
which place did you pre-order from?
skyblaze @ May 31st 2009 12:51PM
nokia's site... i hopped on that 524.00 discount glitch i read about here... didnt even use half my tax return :)
ruffleader @ May 31st 2009 1:00PM
I read this so i would phone to ask about it to make sure
"According to the Nokia customer reps, anybody preordering the N97 will see the full cost of the handset debited from their account immediately. That figure will then be refunded in 1-2 business days - it only being used to check whether the buyer can actually afford the phone - and the actual payment taken out when the N97 is ready for shipment."
Hope you would get it so we can get some review on it.

skyblaze @ May 31st 2009 1:09PM
@ruffleader
thats exactly what happened! the day i ordered it (almost a month ago) they took the money out my account and it stuck on "pending" status... then the funds went back in without ever really leaving... two days ago they took the entire amount (no longer pending. the money's gone for real this time). thanks for the info. now im that much more certain its coming real soon
hell yeah!!! *blows up*
Samboini @ May 31st 2009 3:54PM
Skyblaze, be sure to give us all a review when you do! I have my next phone narrowed down to either the N97 or the next iPhone. Difficult decision.
David Castro @ May 31st 2009 4:52PM
ey, I would like to know when is it going to be released on america, Im expecting my N97
trevor @ May 31st 2009 12:46PM
god, even the annotation doesnt know what the hell he's goin off about
Rob @ May 31st 2009 1:44PM
Oh my bad, Thought you mean the adapter :) Sorry
superhobo @ May 31st 2009 12:53PM
Damnit engadget, will you stop changing my display picture?
flepp @ May 31st 2009 1:03PM
He says at one point :
"Ici on est sur une version pas définitive." -> "This isn't the final version"
He also says that he thinks that at least all the accessories are final
iLoveApple @ May 31st 2009 1:03PM
Wow, that video looks like it was recorded with an iPhone...
go seki @ May 31st 2009 6:36PM
yup .. Monsieur Blurrycam!
IronLantern @ May 31st 2009 1:04PM
I highly doubt that that's a KIRF, but if it is, it is the best I have ever seen, ever!!!!
TheSailor @ May 31st 2009 1:06PM
If that is fake, someone has gone quite a bit out of their way to produce it! I haven't seen any fakes which are that close to an actual phone - and having traveled up and down the chinese coast more time than I can keep track of, I've seen a fake or two :D
grull27 @ May 31st 2009 1:15PM
YouTube HD at it's finest ;)
JaXX @ May 31st 2009 1:16PM
No fake at all, preversion for sure though
His blog is part of the very big Nokia game, involving a handful of blogs and giving away two N97 per blog for those who answer the 5 question quiz "In the search for N"
One thing for sure... unboxing videos with sloppy voices make me sleep :-)
Malaycobra @ May 31st 2009 1:23PM
The N97 that I had the chance to test is not in its final version (in terms of firmware), but s "to much. Some bugs (very little) or slow (very well) will disappear by the final commodity. WiFi used was not very good quality (relatively low signal).
When I filmed this test (excluding applications), it was about 6 am after a short night, where the voice of a little "blasé" NO I was not bored, just tired! (but ultra excited to test the beast!). Another thing, normally I use a tripod, but it is very heavy and I could not take to the hotel.
It is a white N97 QWERTY keyboard, but do not worry, you'll have a QWERTY keyboard in France!
