Samsung unveils 55-inch HD LCD, low power 10.1-inch display, and more at SID 2009

If you're a display aficionado (which you probably are, unless that subscription to Display Aficionado we saw at your apartment was a holiday gift from a misguided aunt) the Samsung booth at SID 2009 is proving to be a non-stop thrill ride, from the company's OLED displays to this next item, the "world's first" true 240Hz full HD 55-inch LCD display. The company is also showing off a new 10.1-inch LCD for netbooks with 50% less power consumption and a none-too-shabby 1366 x 768 resolution. Also on tap is a new 4-inch qVGA TFT-LCD made using a printable semiconductor process, but no details are forthcoming there. Happy Display Week, everybody!

SID 2009 is here in San Antonio, guess Samsung is too cheap to ship over a few hotties from over there. hahahha
Yeah.. Manics!
This is weird, the original photo doesn't include the manics. Why would engadget 'shop it' ? mysterious. Anyway Yay Manics too! :D saw them on Saturday at the Roundhouse in Camden and they really were on form :D
Is it just me, or is the photo making the depth extremely confusing? Like, those two women look like they're standing next to each other, and that 55 inch display looks like a 30 incher at best.
God I'd like to get my hands on that 240hz screen. Crysis won't run at 240fps though for probably another 5 years at least :(
Am I missing something? Have we not had 240Hz displays before? Just the other day I saw an advert on telly about a 600Hz television, sure it probably didn't come in 55" flavours but I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to do and would be surprised if it hasn't already been done.
Just checking to see if this screwy comment system will save my password.
I'm fairly certain you didn't see a tv advertising 600hz, maybe 60....
He's probably talking about the 600hz sub-field nonsense that Panny(I think) is using to describe their plasmas.
The "600hz" feature in panny's plasmas is a little different compared to "240hz" in LCD's. The "600hz" feature doesn't interpolate frames whereas the "240hz" LCD system does.
So basically the entire thing is a marketing ploy. my $0.02
1366 x 768 - odd resolution but still quite decent for it's size. Would make a pretty sweet Netbook
This is typical 16:9 widescreen (720p usually, although the resolution is slightly higher). This appears to be the norm when it comes to 720p displays. That's the best I can describe it.
Nah, its pretty common
"first in the world 240Hz " ? not even close ! sony did that years before with the xbr7 55" . the xbr9 is fully 240Hz on every single tv . what the hell are they talking about ? am i missing something . btw , i dont think the oled is so expensive , they have to hire cheap boothbabe .... cuz they're aint babes .
sony did that years before with the xbr7 55" . the xbr9 is fully 240Hz on every single tv
Wrong and wrong.
But true, Sony has had production 240Hz sets since January this year.
Interesting...Manic Street Preachers are signed to Sony...
I see what you did there.
Nice job on the snaking the Ricky era Manic Street Preachers in there.
That reminds me, I haven't bought the new Manics album yet. Is it out already?
Yes it's out, and it's not bad at all...
as a fellow texan, i still dissaprove.
Gack. WTB better and more exposed models.
Oooh, a low powered LCD. Is that what this is supposed to be about?
I call fake, you can't hawk Sammy products with out some asian chicks blinging out some flash memory and looking like a rockstar.
240hz? Just buy a plasma. Done.
recession's hit pretty hard...
How is this any different than the already available and announced UN55B8000?
Is it just me or are the Asian booth babes hotter at electronic shows? ;p
So if this is the world's first "TRUE" 240Hz, what is the 240Hz displays that everyone else (including Samsung) is offering today? Are these current 240Hz displays bogus? Seems like they are saying that thier own current monitors are not real 240Hz. Strange marketing. I think companies are shooting themselves in the proverbial feet with these "World's First" announcements.
Wow, gr8 nice post, must read.
