So now that the iPhone 3.0 launch is in full swing, we're wondering how it's going out there. Team Engadget appears to have made it through without any problems, but we're hearing sporadic reports of Apple's iTunes activation servers being slammed and potentially some kind of IE security certificate problem on Windows, which is leaving a few people with unusable phones while things get sorted out. Everything work out okay for you?
Why doesn't the comment system work properly? You can't cut out of a web page, but you CAN cut out of Notes or Mail (or anything else with an editable text field.)
Im using an Iphone 2g with 3.0 now, but I cant seem to get to the Accessibility (handicap) menu. I am deaf in my left ear and I was looking forward to mono audio. Was this only limited to the 3g and 3g s?
I'm sad to a certain degree. No more will we hear the Apple Haters complain about copy & paste or MMS or video or the myriad other things the Apple Haters nitpicked. Oh, they'll find ways to complain about those things (well, at least my phone had such and such feature before the third version. Ha!), but people will for the most part will ignore them like they ignored this first comment.
Now we have to hear the Haters complain about things the majority of the non-geek public know nothing about. Seriously, ask your grandmother or your wife if she really, really wants multi-touch on her next phone and bask in the blank stare you get for your trouble.
So be very sad, guys. This is the end of the great days of iPhone bitching. Now we have to hear asinine comparisons between real keyboards versus touch screen keyboards and on occasion, a complaint about needing a removable battery (just buy a Mophie Juicepak, man, seriously).
In other words, get ready for the Apple Haters to get extremely boring. I'm crying about it already.
Why do Engadget's polls never have a 'see results' link?
I don't own an iphone.. I just wanna see the results of the poll.. if everyone in my situation voted "what's an iphone" to get to the results page, then the results get distorted and you have to do some quick math to get to the real answer..
Which is fine, math is no big deal for me, but why not save us the effort?
It only works on editable text, not webpages (sorry about stating the obvious, but... :P). Select some text you typed and it pops up (or any text you can edit in any application). It's just like on any other device, pretty straightforward.
For the voting.... What's an iPhone? Have all these people been living under a rock the past couple of years. Either that, or there are more sarcastic, jealous iPhone-haters than I realized. I can understand not knowing about the digital transition, 9/11 WTC disaster, or the new black president, but never hearing about an iPhone. Absurd.
When the heck is Engadget going to have a side-by-side shootout of Palm Pre vs iPhone 3G S? I wanna see the Palm fanboys get a major spanking.
Accessibility features are limited to the new 3G s phone only (it wasn't something that came as part of the 3.0 OS upgrade). It was nothing to do with audio, but did offer video contrast features. For the exact details, go to the Apple iPhone website and take a look at what's new with the 3Gs (http://www.apple.com/iphone).
I'm having trouble figuring out which phone to buy PALM PRE or IPHONE 3GS? Can anyone help me out here? As far as I can tell, it looks like this:
IPHONE IS LACKING BECAUSE OF THE FOLLOWING: No multitasking No Physical keyboard No LED flash
PALM PRE IS LACKING BECAUSE OF THE FOLLOWING: 8 GB memory limit No true apps - only webapps (so weak) No voice and data at the same time (because of Sprint CDMA network) No voice dialing (WTF) No video recording (WTF?) No voice memos (WTF) No movie rentals (over the air or otherwise) No visual Voicemail No TV show rentals No audiobook purchasing No true app store (18 is a joke) No console-quality games (like Resident Evil, Metal Gear, 1000's of others for iPhone) No Peer to Peer games No VoiceOver (the iPhone can read any screen to you, just like a Mac) No native in-car integration (iPhone has this with dozens of cars) No podcasts Crippled copy/paste (for example - you can't cut or copy a webpage or any part of it) No universal search (crippled - no e-mail search) Tiny keyboard (iPhone landscape and portrait keyboards are bigger than Pre's real keyboard) No auto wi-fi login (just jumps on any open network and remembers them all) No 7.2 Mbps network speed No Remote Wipe No Find My Phone feature Can't function as a Remote for the household stereo (Great for parties, especially with the iTunes DJ feature where people can request songs) Weak battery life More expensive than iPhone Very scratchable screen No oleophobic protective screen No real music store (Apple can break the compatibility at any time and I don't want to take that chance) No Voice Commands (control music playing by saying "Depeche Mode" for example) No Compass No multiple and customizable home screens like iPhone (Pre only has one screen) No Parental Controls No Video Editing No onboard Ringtone Creation No 5 person conference calls No Webclips
Anyone have anything to say about this? Can anyone honestly say the Pre has more features?
PS - the iPhone CAN multitask - you can listen to music, send e-mails, download files, AND surf the web at the same time. What you CANNOT do is have multiple 3rd party apps open at the same time - for example, I can't play Boggle AND Texas Holdem at the same time. And why would I? However, I CAN play Boggle, listen to my music, answer an email, download a PDF, etc. at the same time.
I would honestly like someone to list several dozen features the Pre has that the iPhone doesn't have. I guarantee no one will.
From everything that I've read, 3.0 it has limited AVRCP at best (does not allow forward or reverse track skipping) it merely plays/pauses and questionable volume control. This all begs the question, is this really AVRCP?
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
Okay so we've got copy... what happened to cut?
LOL! Good one.
Nice!
select & press the backspace key
Okay, so it shows up in some places, but not others... weird.
it has to be your own text, something you can edit obviously, like notes or email. You cant cut text from a website
There is no cut? WTF?!!! Srsly who does that??!!
You can't cut out of a web page, but you CAN cut out of Notes or Mail (or anything else with an editable text field.)
Why doesn't the comment system work properly?

Where do the noted sync to?
WTF good is A2DP without AVRCP?

cut is coming iPhone OS 5.0
4:38PM
Goddamn activation server won't let me in.
Apple can't even do that in full blown OS X, what makes you think they can do that here?
What.. they had to leave something for 4.0... how else would they be able to say "over 300 new features."
Im using an Iphone 2g with 3.0 now, but I cant seem to get to the Accessibility (handicap) menu. I am deaf in my left ear and I was looking forward to mono audio. Was this only limited to the 3g and 3g s?
Does anyone else see any stability and speed improvements on their 1st generation iPod Touch?
can't cut from existing text (web page, email, etc). You can only cut text you've entered. Just like on a computer.
Does anybody else see any speed & stability improvements in ther 1st generation iPod Touch?

Ummmm... There is an option missing from the vote poll:
I picked it up off the torrents last week and it activated right away.
I suspect the server difficulties would have been worse had apple not let the GM version out a week earlier.
Uh..select, then press the delete key?
to be honest, one disavows the need for the other...

It's in there.
I upgraded my iPod to OS 3.0 last week and it's been running beautifully.
FAIL
Once I opened Firefox it connected to the apple activation server and all was well! I had tried fifty times prior. I updated on a PC.
What do you mean? It's working fine on mine.
It only works on editable text, not webpages (sorry about stating the obvious, but... :P). Select some text you typed and it pops up (or any text you can edit in any application). It's just like on any other device, pretty straightforward.
I predict that Bob Denley will say: "I love mine, had the iPhone and it just doesn't compare to the Pre... sorry fanboys" because he is a douche.
I win. ^^
Its there, try using it in the adress bar on safari, thats where i tried it
Cut only works if it's from original content, not from websites or e-mails that you received.
I know MMS is not available with ATT yet, but shouldn't the options/icons still be there? I am missing those.
Cut? Whats that? And whats iPhone?
It is there.

It helps to google you know? :)
Getting a Palm Pre tomorrow! Woot!
I love mine, had the iPhone and it just doesn't compare to the Pre... sorry fanboys
I'm copying from websites no problem.
@ aardwolf Well looks like we have a case of "adam doesn't know how shit works"
@ Brando. You can only cut shit from an editable text field. /facepalm. Way to confuse everyone guys.
@Paul
Unfortunetly, we'll still have to hear from those who fap every second they get to the iPhone. Like you.
GTFO and STFU, sir.
@Strap
What bluetooth headphones did you try it on? Having same issue...
And where the hell is the meebo app?!
Yeah, I feel like engadget has very few "apple haters" and a whole lot of Paul A. Chapel Haters.
@Strap: it DOES have AVRCP.
