Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
Umm....
Someone please tell the Winbots that are fawning all over MS in the Zune HD story (YOU SWIPE TO CONTROL IT! THE INNOVATION IS ASTOUNDING!!!) that there's a new Apple story up - they need to get on over here and make crude comments about Steve Jobs and rage about fanboys and such.
Quickly now!
I'm thinking the same thing as you Luke. Umm...is that the annoying guy from Cloverfield who never puts the camera down even in face of certain doom and is all the rage at parties?
these are the guys that feed the trolls...
@panid, my thoughts exactly
@luke, my thoughts exactly
Some people have too much free time/money... Only thing good enough to need this type of rig is an SLR or maybe a very high end point and shoot (or most $400+ consumer camcorders), putting it on a phone is pointless. Now, using your iphone as a touchscreen remote/viewfinder for a decent camera (especially slrs), that would be something.
@Quix.
Wow, you Apple fanatics are so pathetic now that you need to pre-troll a story in order to try to cover for how silly some of this stuff is.
obvious troll is obvious
i still don't understand why people like Look_Around_You are spending so much time trying to undo the trolling and pointing it out to others... it's funny the first few times watching these trolls getting pwn3d by u guys, but it's now getting tiresome
if you guys just leave these trolls alone, they'll die on their own without the feeding. you guys are just seemingly feeding the fire... i'm not sure if you guys are doing it on purpose (just like these trolls starting the flame on purpose) or you guys are just plain stupid and can't recognise what they're doing...
Leave it to Apple to do the best.
Now that is creative. :)
Watch as M$ tries to copy this for their Zune HD... Opps, oh, the Zune HD has no Camera.
Well, M$ fanboys will need to wait until Zune HDX-554 is out.
Yeah it's overkill.
As a filmmaker I can say that the crazy thing is though the iphone will be shooting 720p video (the ARM processor in already has the capacity to do this)by June next year and 1080p in 2011 or 2012 - people will be making feature films on mobile phones very shortly. By 2015 phones will have 2K resolution video as a pretty standard feature AND the footage will be amazing off them.
@ tm23
Yes, but even with 8K footage coming from iPhone, it'll never EVER match the quality and DOF as it's simply just too small. Not even trying to mention colors, light response etc... But hey, I've seen some amazing footage shot on very low end electronics, so who knows?
Don't show Peter Jackson though...
That guy was very annoying
@Gus Umm you do realize that Look is the ultimate troll right? Seen an apple article that he hasn’t posted negatively in lately? Nope didn’t think so. Obviously Quix IS a moron though.
awww !!
look at this
http://blogs.nokia.com/nseries/index.php/2009/06/25/noisettes-shoot-latest-video-on-the-nokia-n95-8gb-and-5800/
Leave it to Alex. I'm surprised that didn't cost 2k :)
You mean 3 Alexes? :-p
FAIL
Yes Fernando, you usually do.
The iPhone 3GS retainer add-on. Never lose your phone or retainer again as they are fused together in this summer's tech hit wardrobe accessory must-have. Double-handles will allow you to hold on tight during bumpy station wagon rides to the local dentist or during one of the many ass-kickings you'll become accustomed to receiving.
why??
Gosh.... isn't this going too far for a 3mpx camera with no optical zoom..
What is the relevance of the 3MP resolution of the still camera? This rig is for video, which is VGA resolution.
Alex Lindsay FTW as far as I'm concerned. Wow!
I was thinking more along the lines of WTF.
wow, thats pretty lame.
Not enough shoulder-mounted 3GS video.
It almost resembles a transformer…
looks more like johnny 5
Now, do they make this for the new Nikon and Canon cameras that shoot fairly good quality 1080p videos?
Yes.
http://www.redrockmicro.com/dslr/
Yes, but you can't afford them.
If you really need a shoulder rig to shoot video with your D-SLR, then you're probably making money off of that video and the shoulder rig is a justifiable business expense. Of course, they're still overpriced.
virtual boy?
It still seems a little shaky for me considering you have a crap load of hardware attached. I think they missed the point on the convenient thing. If I had a case to carry all of that equipment attached to the iphone, then I would also have the pro. camera to go along with it. Unless they can make it so it is like go go gadget iphone rig, then I will pass.
Wow... thats just... wow...
If they weren't concerned about size they should have made it bigger
Worst thing is that he seems to believe the phone is the first to be able to upload to youtube while on the phone. Considering how many phones can do that already the number of Iphones will fail in comparison to all the phones that currently allow this.
No no, its on THE iPhone, therefore, Apple invented it. QED.
Apparently there are a number of you who take things far to seriously. It's a joke people. Obviously they have a very nice camera already, but every gadget nerd loves to actually PLAY with their gadgets, right? I don't think he means that any serious pro videographer is going to be trying this out. They did it for fun.
Stress and envy do that to normally functioning individuals.
Thank you for being the first rational person to point that out here. I'm starting to get sick of the kind of comments I see on Engadget, digg and sites like it. People are way too cynical these days, they can't seem to realize that sometimes gadget geeks just do outrageous things for sh*ts and giggles.
Exactly. When i was working for a wireless ISP in fort worth, we had a LAN party at the park like a picnic. Everyone came out with their computers, i tapped into the wireless and we BBQ'd and played MOHAA and COD2 until the generators ran out of gas. We could have just had the lan party in a spot that you know, had power and Internet, but that’s not as much fun.
They're not 'taking things far too seriously', they're just doing their usual anti-Apple trolling, that they do on every single article (Apple-related or not).
The immature Apple-bashing has been going on now for more than a year, it keeps on getting worse and worse as the bad (Saad Rabia) give way to the terrible (Look_Around_You).
Engadget have never looked like they're going to do anything about it ... but they'll try to "protect" the MS crowd - I remember seeing a 'please Apple fans, don't troll' message on a MS launch article that was never reciprocated on any Apple article, despite the hysteria, slander and outright personal attacks that the anti-Apple trolls engage in.
I'm going to stick with "Umm....."
I heard Transformers 3 is going to be shot this way. Makes a way better crash cam than a $30,000+ film camera.
lol wouldn't be much worse than part 2 according to the reviews.
That would be a joke even if it was made for a phone that actually has a good camera
roflmao. 'nuff said.
Kudos to Chris Dunning.. these guys are just having fun with their new toy.. this is obviously not meant to be taken very seriously... LIGHTEN UP PEOPLE! don't be a hater.
Overkill.
Stuff like this gets done all the time for commercials or feature films.
The director wants a particular look for a particular shot.
To get it you need to shoot on a handicam or a mobile phone or whatever crappy camera is suitable.
Except even though you want a crappy image, you still need it smooth or in focus or whatever, so you need to add normal accessories to it, like you would a big camera.
Whole music videos have been shot on mobile phones.
I'm not aware of any feature films that have been shot on mobile phones, but several features have been shot on Fisher Price Pixelvision toy cameras for example.
Thank you. Someone has probably decided they're going to shoot a video or feature on the iPhone and needed something like this, certainly a gimmick but that qualifies as a characteristic whether you like it or not. The truth is, this is just a Red Rock platform that can be used for many cameras depending on which little accessories you attach to it, like the arm shown holding the iPhone. This is more a case of "Well, why not?" than the condescending stream of "Why?" seen here.
you giggle? if this was for palm or nokia or something else, you'd not even BOTHER to make an article about it..
this is pure bullsh!t.
Awww.
Awww...
Awwww...
i see a trend here...
I love how the iPhail fanboys never talk about all the people with previous generation iPhones that got screwed with no Video Recording app - that it was 3GS only. People around me in the office all groaned when they happily did the O/S 3.0 update and were then disappointed to see no video app - nice going apple.
Tell them about the free 3rd party apps for video
You have seen the 15fps video on the qix jailbreak app right? Do you really think most non geeks would be happy with that? You would have people lining up thinking there was something wrong since their video was stuttery and crappy.
That's insane..
how bored can the engadget editors be?
they can't go a day without posting some shit story about the icraphone
Don't give Apple ideas...
..and btw the IP 3GS is capable of shooting video at 720p, we just have to wait for some devs to release an app on cydia.
I'd like to see Pre or Zune or whatever Microsoft/Symbian fanboys drooling thamselves on doing just that.
On IP 3G there are apps such as Cycoder, which enables you to record videos with no problems.
And yeah Macbooks still suck.
Well, that's more of a question of the quality of the sensor. Even though the processor may be able to encode such resolutions it may be impossible to scan the sensor with a frequency high enough for 720p video. I guess the biggest thing that bugs everyone who hates 3GS are three things:
- iPhone should have been able to do this from day one - adding this feature wasn't progress, it was caching up.
- if iPhone has the power to do 720p now, why doesn't it do it now? I guess it's because Apple wants to make you buy a new iPhone 3GSX next year - this time with 720p video. It's just lame, how Apple mistreats it's customers and still gets glorified.
- it's another "innovation" hijacked by Apple: it's nothing new, just in an Apple package, and suddenly everyone is crazy about it.
The Symbian powered Samsung i8910 HD shoots 720p video and other Symbian phones have been shooting VGA videos at 30 fps for over 2 years now so i don't see your point.
I just don't get this attitude. It obviously DIDN’T NEED any of these things you say it NEEDED, or it would have failed, which it didnt. So your argument is totally pointless and a waste of space.
Its like saying the Pre is going to fail cause it cant do video, ZOMG OH NOES HOW WILL IT SURVIVE.
Oh Symbian does this, this this this this this. Symbian makes me want to kill people.
Well he started the argument by saying it can't.
I was going to laugh at it, but when I saw how clear the video from the GS was, then it started to make sense about doing podcasts, etc. The rig might be a little bulky, but the concept is there. Would I use a GS for video instead of a Flip? Not sure, but the built-in editing features and the upload to youtube sure looks attractive.
Its missing a mirror for those video-calls .. oh wait .. urm .. yeah forget that ..
Alex Lindsay just became my hero.
All the toe jam level intelligence from the typical abuse fest in the forum aside...
This is a bit much, I know this will be the year of accessories but this???
Haha, I heard this mentioned as a passing thought on one of the TWiT shows. Leave it to Alex Lindsay.
I just wanted that guy in the video to shut up.
Isn't that art...? 4 grand worth of equipment while wearing a 4 dollar t-shirt...
How about I attach the itouch to the VR Game Gun with the built-in motion tracking.
Cor Blimey!
so if i understand this correctly, it is actually using the iphone camera, and not just using the phone as a display/storage device? thats crazy.
now anyone can make porn!
Go go gadget REALITYDISTORTIONFIELD.
All we need is apple themselves to give a thumbs up, and, the entire swarm will be running and screaming at anyone who didn't like it at first (including themselves.) Not to say all folks who like apple are gullible, just.. Most of the userbase in general kinda tries to hard at times to look cool, or prove themselves useful, or, rather..
"Anything you can do, I can do better!"
"I can do anything, better than you."
"No you can't."
"Yes I can."
I have never met a single person who uses apple products that fits this "hipster" box you guys always point us too. In fact everyone i know who uses Apple computers, has run the gamut from unix-linux-windows-osx. ALL of the people i know that use apples except for my wife and mother in law, are professionals in the tech industry.
This brings up another point that just makes me laugh every time i see one of these little mini hate posts. This is a Tech Blog, the guys who write for this tech blog have used and reviewed THOUSANDS of computers/phones/cameras. There is a reason these guys and just about every other tech blog employee uses Apples, Its because they like them and they do what they want, it is not because apple pays them, or because they just hate MS. Just keep that in mind next time one of you MSKKK starts your hate speech.
Shit, just as he says, "its too far".
stupidest thing ever
Speachless...
Looks wack
Needs one of these to REALLY go all the way for stabilization
http://www.adorama.com/images/Large/VDSCF24LEHV.jpg
come on, people! What ever happened to "Because we can"???? Why do we overclock a graphics prosc? Because we can! Why do we put Linux on an iPod? Because we can! Why do we hack a bunch of controller parts into a real guitar so we can play Rock Band full-scale? Because we can!
We're geeks and nerds. If you're reading this blog and don't think you're a geek, YOU ARE WRONG. Yes, a shoulder mount for a cell phone camera is comical overkill, but it's nerdy and fun.
Lighten up, people, have some fun in life!!!
Nokia is already at another level! watch this.
http://blogs.nokia.com/nseries/index.php/2009/06/25/noisettes-shoot-latest-video-on-the-nokia-n95-8gb-and-5800/
This is incredibly stupid.
This is called CREATIVITY! It's wonderful and awesome. This is perfect for a budding film maker. I wish people didn't judge others so harshly. Really who cares what people do with their time and money. Live and let live.
When there is one I can put in my purse, I'll get excited. This is a bit silly. Sorry.
