Sprint takes a bite out of the Apple, touts innovative Pre features like 'multitasking'
From the look of it, our BFF Roger McNamee stole himself a copy of Adobe InDesign and has gone wild in Sprint's ad department, calling out the iPhone for its unitasking nature and spendy contract price. All we have to say is that if this is really going to turn into this generation's Sega vs. Nintendo war, we'd better see a whole lot more licensed Joe Montana titles.

and im sure for every 1 person that hates Sprint theres another that hates AT&T. We all have different stories to tell about these comapanies.
Me personally iv had only once problem with Sprint in 8yrs of being a customer.
Im glad Sprint and Palm are finally bringing out the advertising. I love my Pre and its been the best phone iv ever had. Not hating on the iphone at all but its just not for me. I like having options and multitasking to me is very important feature. Plus the $$ i save on my sprint plan cant be beat by AT&T. Give me unlimited everything for $60 and ill continue to be a customer.
50k compared to 1million. Enough said.
50k-1M which is the normal ratio between smart people and dumb people..smart people always have been a minority of the population =)
See, like here. This fellow could have just said "iPhone!"
lmao EGO
@reefur7 @ Jun 26th 2009 11:37AM "50k-1M which is the normal ratio between smart people and dumb people..smart people always have been a minority of the population =)"
Cool, so you agree then finally. Mac users, the minority have always been smarter than the Majority Windows users...dumb people as you say. Cool!
So what you're saying reefer is that the dumb people are spread all over the world and the smart people are concentrated just here in the states! Brilliant!
or i could have just said PRE!
a bunch of people drives Ford.
not a lot people even know what a Ferrari is. im willing to bet you drive a Ford. sad.
oh dammit. my grammar is all messed up. have mercy on me grammar Nazis!!
@ reefur7
I guess I am missing something because the amount of money that and Att and Apple are making on 1 million iPhone's really shows other wise.
I guess by your standards, buying product from a desperate company that offers bad customer service and crappy service in general really makes you intelligent.
Palm must be really smart if they decided to put the only device that can compete with the iPhone on the worst network.
thats right jso, because pissing boatloads of money away every month is soooooo smart. I've never had a problem with customer service or my network. More often than not it's everyone else who has problems in basements elevators subways...and i've still got plenty of bars.
herd mentality ftw
I don't see how you can compare the number of apps. The Pre is new, while the iPhone has been around for a couple years. And by a couple, I don't mean 30.
You all got the numbers mixed up man. The 50k+ is the number of Apps available in App Store, not how many downloads within a month. Last time I remembered Apple is reaching almost 1 billion downloads.
I am not talking about the applications in the stores. I am talking about the first weekend sales. Apple Sold 1 million phones even after Roger McNamee tried to talk down what Apple would sell. The Pre only sold 50k.
Oh, now suddenly a large number is a bad thing. Like Windows users right? Come on the iPhone has a lot of apps--more than the Pre. Where's all the people crying choice is good? To be fair, the Pre has a lot of apps made when they don't even have an SDK yet. Happy?
I love Apple fanboys. They somehow thing that large sales for the iPhone makes it a much better phone, but when the majority of people buy Windows, they are stupid, and Apple is better.
You can't have both!
Oh this'll be fun!
*Grabs popcorn*
*Pulls out the Diet Water*
Pass me those Milk Duds.
I think for a nice change of pace, instead of actual conversation, people should just shout "iPhone!" and "Pre!"
They still should have also said
"you still don't have MMS on your iphone? the Pre's had it since day 1!"
I agree with this sentiment.
PRE.
Yes the Pre does things the iPhone doesn't it runs literally a couple (30) apps vs 50,000+ on the iPhone...
Not much of a feature to run multiple things when there are only a couple things to run...lol
Literally a couple is 30?
This isn't Utah. A couple is 2.
That said... the Pre, and Sprint itself, is a piece of shit. The iPhone is costly, and WORTH IT.
Real-time updates suck, and shouldn't be something you brag about in the jailbreaking/rooting-happy era.
There are 30 applications right now...there will hundreds or even thousands in the next few months. And honestly I would rather have a few thousand really great apps than 50,000 apps littered with iFart.
Since when have these threads ever held "actual conversation"?
@Cheddar-- a couple = two.
@robpetrin
Imagine a phone you don't have to jailbreak for basic features. What do you jailbreak your iphone for?? backgrounder, winterboard and notification mods.
Guess what? The pre has 2 of those 3 so unless you really want some mario theme the pre doesn't need jailbreaking.
*steals a handfull of popcorn*
release the fanboys!
Man, they couldn't even get passed your post before kicking off.
iPre !
Cheddar - now let's be fair and honest here... it took the iPhone a year to get an app store and SDK. While no one really expects the Palm apps to rival the iPhone, I'm sure given a year's time, the Palm will have a nice catalog of apps.
Well with this article they will get a flame war. Secretly though in a roundabout way you can tell that engadget has a iPhone bias since every ad on this page is for the pre. more refreshes, more money for advertising....more money sprint/palm pays engadget....They're inadvertantly funding the opposition!!!!!!!!!
Hero! Who's with me?? :p
Wow, Cheddar, that was the dumbest thing I've read here in a long time. I think I might have lost a couple (hopefully not 30) IQ points just reading it. Holy shit...
@JC
I'm sitting here with my T-Mobile SIM card and my iPhone 3G S.
Enough said.
Diet Water?
Wow.
That ad made me chuckle.
I want to see what happens next!
Genesis does, what Nintendon't.
@ Rob
Enough said? I'm not sure using a 3GS on Tmobile is the ideal situation, but I guess their plans are a lot cheaper?
An iPhone 3G S on T-Mobile? Given that the phone doesn't support T-Mobiles 3G frequencies, don't you really have an iPhone S?
Great amusement value...this thread
When a "cell-phone" is the center of attention in ones "life" .......then you have none
I can't wait to see endless PreFart apps on the Pre marketplace or whatever it's called. In fact, I'm going to write one now...
SAMSUNG i330!!!
Apparently NOT enough said.
I have a T-Mobile SIM card and an iPhone 3G S.... therefore I need a jailbreak to unlock it in order to use it.
And yes, not being able to use 3G on it is a flaw.... but I don't have 3G service in my area right now anyway, so I didn't get 3G on my old G1 anyway. (
Blackberry!
Damn new length limit.
G1 + puddle = RIP
$600 for iPhone vs. $200 (T-Mo early cancel) + $200 (AT&T iPhone) + $10 more for the plan for 24 months
$600 vs. $640
I'm currently not in range for T-Mobile 3G (I gotta pay for it anyway), so no 3G, iPhone or G1. Oh well.
Yawn.
Landline!!!!!
/agree with ChillyCat
Telepathy!
@ChillyCat:
You can thank Apple for doing that. Just like they did with PC's.
People are addicted to their Blackberry's, but they don't get offended and don't cry when you insult it.
couple (m-w.com)
4: an indefinite small number : few
Thus "a couple" can mean 2 or 10 or 30. It's all relative.
Common Sense 1, Gramer Check FanBoys 0
@robpetrin
"a couple is 2 - this isn't Utah"
They are correct
Hopefully this will put pressure on apple add multitasking with next software update the iphone 3GS can handle it
And this fellow could say "Pre!"
Isn't this fun?
So you can flip through a couple web apps. WOW!! That is just amazing!
@Dax
It's the point of me not having to choose between answering a message yet having to start my damn game all over =|
PRE IS LACKING BECAUSE OF THE FOLLOWING:
8 GB memory limit
No true apps - only webapps (so weak)
No voice and data at the same time (because of Sprint CDMA network)
No voice dialing (WTF)
No video recording (WTF?)
No voice memos (WTF)
No movie rentals (over the air or otherwise)
No visual Voicemail
No TV show rentals
No audiobook purchasing
No true app store (18 is a joke)
No console-quality games (like Resident Evil, Metal Gear, 1000's of others for iPhone)
No Peer to Peer games
No VoiceOver (the iPhone can read any screen to you, just like a Mac)
No native in-car integration (iPhone has this with dozens of cars)
No podcasts
Crippled copy/paste (for example - you can't cut or copy a webpage or any part of it)
No universal search (crippled - no e-mail search)
Tiny keyboard (iPhone landscape and portrait keyboards are bigger than Pre's real keyboard)
No auto wi-fi login (just jumps on any open network and remembers them all)
No 7.2 Mbps network speed
No Remote Wipe
No Find My Phone feature
Can't function as a Remote for the household stereo (Great for parties, especially with the iTunes DJ feature where people can request songs)
Weak battery life
More expensive than iPhone
Very scratchable screen
No oleophobic protective screen
No real music store (Apple can break the compatibility at any time and I don't want to take that chance)
No Voice Commands (control music playing by saying "Depeche Mode" for example)
No Compass
No multiple and customizable home screens like iPhone (Pre only has one screen)
No Parental Controls
No Video Editing
No onboard Ringtone Creation
No 5 person conference calls
No Webclips
It's funny how most of these "no-go's" in that list was JUST added in the 3rd iteration of a smartphone???
Hmm...how much you wanna bet the Pre users will have it before their 2nd iteration =]
Android FTW
@Dax,
If you don't understand the advantages of multitasking, then yes, the iPhone is perfect for you.
@murmermer,
Why don't you just simplify your list and say "No fruity logo on the back cover" and be done?
@murmermemrmemrer
Can you at least update the list you spam on every Pre thread?
I expect more from such a dedicated shill. How are you ever going to get to first base with Steve with that effort?
@joe23521
I like to be able to run apps that access data over the net when I'm on calls, so yes, I understand multitasking, which is why I prefer the iPhone's limited multitasking over the Pre's limited (by the network) multitasking.
@iDavey
That may be true, but the comparison today between the Pre and the iPhone gives us this list of no-gos for the Pre. If you want to compare the g1 or g2 version of the iPhone to Pre at the time, you'd have to add "Must wait 1 year" or "Must wait 2 years" to the list. The Pre will evolve, but so will the iPhone. Palm isn't in the same financial position Apple is to invest the same level of R&D or command anything from vendors like Apple can. For example, don't expect Palm to have access to anything from PA Semi.
@murmermer
You left out one of the points that's actually one of the most relevant to me...The iPhone, due to it's significantly larger user base, and shared characteristics of the even larger iPod user base has all kinds of accessories and benefits. The Palm Pre for example doesn't dock with my car, doesn't dock with my boat, my home stereo, etc... Also, free WiFi at AT&T hotspots like Starbucks, McDonalds, etc...which can also easily be hacked to use your laptop with.
The picture is pretty funny. Was wondering when we would see this kind of direct advertising.
@Neeko, you too could have just say pre. Ego, this is fun!
palm bites back
*drum, bigger drum, cymbol.
looks to be a rotten one at that.
But they are setting themselves up for a fall if they aim to directly compete with the iPhone. They should be targeting Blackberry users and WinMo users first. This is the first really stupid thing Palm has done since announcing the Pre (aside from losing $80 million in the last quarter).
@Jim
I think if anything they should of gone on about how the At&t network is rubbish
Sigh....this is pointless and waste of money and we all know iphone is better than pre...thats most pathetic ad i have ever seen ..let it go
If you find that ad pathetic you must not look at an Apple ads. All apple ads are pathetic. The one bashing Microsoft for legal copy? Are you kidding me, go into the legal section of your iPhone and tell me how huge it is. I did and I was amazed at how long it is. That's just for a phone, I would hate to see what they have for computers.
No way, man, I love seeing fanboys fight it out, it's great entertainment! Every now and again you gotta pour a little gas on the fire to keep it going. :)
haha look back...who started it....no more words need to be said here..simple
I'm not a fanboy, I own an iPhone, iPod, and a Mac. I just think the typical Apple fanbois who believe Apple can do no wrong and everything all other companies do = FAIL! are completely pathetic in all aspects of life.
im no apple fanboy..but i do have apple products...its just simple..theyre wasting their time.
Alright well all fanboyism aside cuz no one really cares, I don't see how any advertising - especially that aimed directly at your main competition - can be a waste of time. There are people out there who can't wait to get out of their contract with their iPhone, and seeing an ad stating hey, "your iphone contract is up. perfect timing" is a good way to capture that market. We on these websites obviously know about the pre, we know what it does, we know how it compares. The majority of the public don't. Those looking for an alternative or just a phone in general will see ads like that and that's what draws them in.
When did Microsoft have commercials directly attacking Apple =\
Can I get some YouTube links and such?
The closest thing I can think of is their laptop hunters, and even that didn't DIRECTLY attack. That's why I love Microsoft, they can make good products (don't try and say they can't - can't wait to get a final copy of Win7 on my mac so I never have to run osx again) and sell them without trying to spew crap all over the competition.
But even the Laptop Hunters were AFTER Apple's "Hey I'm a Mac, I'm a PC" commercial.
Say what you want about MS. They never went that low until backed into a corner.
And even their "low" isn't that low. They just speak the truth...
Whereas Apple speaks partial truths.
Sure Apple has less viruses. But uh...when your market share is less than 10% nationwide (even less worldwide)...who is REALLY trying to hack you =\
what does the apple represent? I'm lost here.
Taking a bite out of Apple..
That all Apple can offer is a core, not the full on product with things like multitasking...
A Apple core is usually garbage...
I'm sure there's more references
I think the apple is meant to represent the discontentment of the bourgeoise being pushed against by the upstart proletariat. The reflections underneath remind us that although a crude mimicry looks the same, its a whole new world full of danger.
And then there's the really obvious references to the womb and body dysmorphic disorder, but hell, mentioning that is like saying the sky is a wonderous shade of cerulean blue that fills one with a sense of hope and belonging.
LOLRITE?
@Orinjz
You've been studying for your SAT's haven't you.
@Orinjz
I need an app that translates what you just said to common folk speak. My vocabulary is limited to words like USB and ethernet :(
Let's see here kimleng, I found a tip calculator, iFart, a tip calculator, Shake the baby game, a tip calculator, an app for armpit fart noises, another tip calculator, Hottest Girls, oh, and another tip calculator. Let me know if any of those suggestinons helped you out in comprehending orinjz's post.
@ Orinjz:
+1 You are my new favorite.
It's about time someone fights back at Apple with their own style of advertising.
This fellow could have just said PRE!!!
Wow, they look desperate.
completely desperate.
Just like Apple attacking Microsoft desperate...right...right =o
@iDavey
And vice versa...
Please describe an event where Microsoft attacked Apple in DIRECT ads BEFORE the "Hello, I'm a Mac" commercials...hmm.
And please...proof. Not just words.
Oh...and WHAT does Microsoft have to be desperate about? LMAO
That was THE funniest comment ever.
They top Apple in all market share except PMP area...
And guess what...MS don't really care about that. But they have the money to keep going at it (read: Zune HD)
And also...how is Microsoft desperate?? WHAT exactly do they have to be desperate about? LMAO
That's the funniest comment all day.
Damn Engadget commenting system >.

@Roland
You really can't read or follow directions can you =\
I said BEFORE Apple's attack ads. These are all dated 2009. All of these came out in 2009.
Apple attacked MS how early.
You play with fire, you get burned.
MS was attacked, they attacked back.
Now as I said...and follow me now...
GIVE ME AN AD THAT WAS BEFORE THE "HI, I'M A MAC" COMMERCIAL!
Can you do that??
And still...the question was avoided. What is MS desperate about?? Hmm???
@idavy, the delusional idiot.
