Engadget HD takes a spin with Samsung's BD-P4600 Blu-ray player
The crew over at Engadget HD never gets tired of trying out new Blu-ray players and this time it is Samsung's top of the line BD-P4600's turn. If you've ever thought that the perfect place to put your Blu-ray player is mounted on the wall under your HDTV, then there is little doubt that this is the Blu-ray player for you. Of course that doesn't mean you should buy it blindly without any other regards, which is exactly why we took the time to try it out for you.

I don't think it's glossy enough.
Get PS3 if you want glossy
Try as I might, I'll never get my PS3 to be THAT shiny!
It puts the lotion on its console. Now polish. Good.
And try as I might, it just won't stick to the wall. =(
design is very nice....
Design is VERY nice *visually*... Usability-wise, it's awful. Disc loads in the SIDE!? What were you thinking, Sammy? That really limits where you can put it without having to pick it up and turn it all the time, and if you do, you'll finger up the glossy finish.
@macserv
That's because it's designed to be wall mounted with wall mounted TVs.
It I can't use it as a second monitor, not glossy enough!
Trumpets blaring
Looks nice, but $600? I'd rather get me a new Playstation 3.
600?
Its selling for 449 CAD here.
I was debating getting it because my TV sits over a gas fireplace and theres a nice spot on the wall to mount this.
Either that, or make a shelf, which would obstruct TV viewing.
I hope you guys didn't use monster cables with this. `cause they suck.
You must be sadly misinformed, Monster is nothing but top notch high quality cables. Nothing can match their superiority just like no other speaker brand can touch Bose.
@Derek
Hahaha, you must be the most clever troll ever. That or you are serious and a moron.
@AMiSH PiRATE: It's the monster price that sucks, not the cables themselves.
@Derek: +1, but only if you're being sarcastic. Bose *used* to be a worthwhile brand (before Amar lost his mind and got into cold fusion research), even at the relatively-high prices, but Monster products have never been worth anything remotely resembling the asking prices. It's a tribute to the failure of American science education that both brands are so popular now.
@ Zhuzhu
You have my apologies. Any cable that can hold its own against a coat hanger is A-Okay in my book.
mmmmmmmm where I have seen this? oh, yeah a PS3! I guess SAMSUNG is going ahead for a slim PS3 redesign.
Now all they have to do is make the remote glossy and look nice
ewwww fingerprints >.
you're right, the DVD-esque box looks much better than curves :-)
Hey! You stole my icon! But I don't care, GO JAGS!
The player is gonna stay glassy for like 7days. Enjoy all kinda prints all over the player after a while, unless it has some hi tech BD tray, that sucks in hovering BD ROMs without human and Godly intervention for you to see your next Transformers movie.
I'm glad that it comes with SD RCA cables...I hear they really pump out the 1080p like no other.
Cool!
send it my way.
so that's what apple does with their recycled macbook screens
Why the hell does it load from the side?? Cause that's going to work in an AV cabinet.
If you spend the $499 on this Blu-ray player, I really doubt you'll be putting it in an AV cabinet! LOL
Except it's not supposed to go in an AV cabinet?
"For anyone other than those who simply must mount everything on their wall, "
@P
If I was spending that much on any of my AV equipment it would go in a rack!
It's from the future!
i'll take one !!!!!!!!!!!
RCA cables? What is this, 2001?
In the same price range, check out the OPPO BDP-83. All things considered, it seems to me that the OPPO is a much better choice, unless you simply cannot live without Netflix streaming on your BD player.
Samsung's designers are just catering to our every need. Every tried to get laid by showing off your tech park to your fellow geekettes? They will ask strange questions if you have a *mirror* mounted under your insanely big TV. Solution? This. Thank you, Samsung.
It looks eerily similar to the T-tops they had on the Trans Am back in the 80's. Blah.
Now for the HD TV I need to buy.
Is it just me, or does the rounded shape make it look a LOT bigger than it actually is? I had to click through the gallery to make sure that it wasn't the size of my desktop printer.
noice
Cool, where is it?
Thing is fugly
Dude, I need this. It will match my TV perfectly. Plus I am, as Steve call it, a wall person. I would love to see this mounted on the wall, next to my Sammy TV. Come on, hook me up, as I still dont have a Blu-Ray player yet.
So people can watch your ugly Blu-Ray player instead of the TV. Very gaudy/ugly concept. Would have been accepted from Korean makers 5 years ago by today we expect something more classy even from Korean products.
What horrendous placement/design of that USB stick. I'm guessing it's a Wifi adaptor. You figure for $600 they could have built it in and hidden the antenna around the chassis.
Give to me!

Looks cute if I were hanging it on a wall...My Pioneer Elite BDP-09FD blows everything away.
You would hang this crap next to a Pioneer Elite? You don't deserve a Pioneer Elite.
I saw one in the store. It is an ugly POS IMHO. It would be a nice an thin Blu-Ray player if it didn't have that ridiculous stand hard fastened to it on the bottom. I really don't care for a cheap glossy plastic thing angled up at me in my entertainment center. It is pretentious crap design. It takes more space than a regular Blu-Ray player and much more space than a nice thin Blu-Ray player.
Stupid disc player should not even be visible. Who cares to make that ugly garbage visible in their house, I am not accepting advertising for Samsung over here.
