802.11n should go final by September, just when it's starting to feel slow
It's been a long, long... long time coming, folks. Since 2004, the world at large has been waiting for 802.11n to finally go legit, and while we've been getting along just fine with Draft-N devices, the IEEE is inching closer to completion of the final specification. According to Bob Heile, the chairman of the IEEE 802.15 working group on Personal Area Networks, "802.11 [has been] granted unconditional approval to forward 11n to RevCom," which is currently scheduled to take place on September 11th in New Jersey. He continued by uttering the understatement of the year with "this was an extremely complex project." We won't even bother retracing all the time line slips that we've seen over the years, but we can't help but chuckle at the notion of an ever faster 802.11 protocol to be discussed at the very same meeting. So, let's see here -- 802.11n finally gets its certificate of authenticity after parading around for half a decade as an unfinished draft, and CES 2010 brings about devices based on the even faster 802.11ac. Marvelous.

It's more than starting to feel slow. Anyone who streams HD content around their house has noticed the limitations of 802.11n by now.
On a sidenote, Youtube HD works on 802.11g.
On a sidenote. Blu-Ray specs at a maximum of 48Mbps for a movie, far more than you'd really need and a decent bit less than what 11g is capable of
I don't know why you guys are so interested in 802.11n since it only runs in 2.4, 3.6 and 5 GHz frequency. I rather use 802.11v which uses use abbr EHF and has the capacity to stream over 200GBPS.
Damn about time
Does it ever end?
i think imma skip 802.11n and see what ac offers. seeing as how most n devices will still work with the final spec it probably won't hurt to go with second or third gen ac devices
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. But I don't want to be stuck with my bloody WRT54G Router! so I think I'll switch just so I can have an excuse to upgrade my router :p
I'm on a wired connection so idgaf
:P
wired is really the only way to go for streaming anything. i don't care what people say to try and convince me otherwise
wait for it.......... BANHAMMER!!
whats 802.11ac?
Very High Throughput
wtf. they just cut off half my comment.
Very High Throughput
k i'm done copying and pasting.
f this
So.. n is not even final but its obsolete? wow..
It took 5 years to finalize is it really that surprising?
Okay ... so I've still got a G router... had it for a couple years, but I have an N draft wireless NIC in this here computer machine. What sort of speed increase am I looking at by upgrading to an N Draft or N final router when the time comes? I live in a small house, separated only by one normal wall from the router.
Drill + Ethernet cable. You will see results up to 1gbps
5 Years, must be run by the US government or something!
If your internet speed isn't higher than 54Mbps, you won't see any difference. If you do lots of network file transfers you'll see an increase but otherwise, it's the same.
Wow, that old thing wasn't even done yet? What a joke.
when will 802.11ac be released to the public???
2012
to be more specific, December 21st 2012 ;)
and to think, these guys make the opengl 3.0 (and their mess) committee look good
piece of shit, be gone
I wish that I had internets fast enough for this to matter to me. You'd think in the middle of frickin Seattle I could get enough bandwidth to reliably stream video. Sadly not.
We don't need any more speed. We need longer range than 100 meters!
nice
Finally we can buy routers that we know will be compatible with all of our N cards.

I'm wiring my house. Wireless just doesn't cut it.
We hard wired the house to a wireless router. Fast transfers, but we can connect laptops and iPhones. Best of all worlds.
