iJoyPad demoed on iPhone 3GS, full screen PSX games looking rather sweet
The iJoyPad has been floating around for a bit now, but we've never seen a full demo of the add-on gamepad. Well, it's back in a video demoing its performance on an iPhone 3GS, using the psx4iphone emulator in full screen glory. The demo shows off Wipeout XL and Ridge Racer performing quite quickly and smoothly, and the iJoyPad itself seems totally functional -- and while it's a tiny bit clunky looking as far as we're concerned, we'd still like to swipe one for ourselves. Hit the read link for the video.

Cool! We now have a Gaming pad. Now to the hardware keyboard!
how come it's still not in retail? I want dual analog stick too!
Surely if you're going to put ugly add ons to play PS1 games you could just buy a PSP GO?
I agree. You're better off with a psp go. This looks fugly.
I'd go with the PSP-3000. Bigger screen. UMD.
@Aguilez
Oh boy, did you say UMD?
I think the idea behind this is that you already own an iPhone.
/snark
I thought it was a demo of how ugly the PSPGo is
Beats the PSP Go ugly look.
Burn in hell. How can you say this thing is better than PSP Go? The bottom looks like it came from the Gizmondo.
Obvious sarcasm is obvious.
Redundancy is redundant.
Ninevoltoys is ninevoltoys.
Stop it! This is an official warning from the Department of Redundancy Department.
Adding a game pad would make the iPhone a decent gaming device (3GS of course).
Now we need a standard so game developers can code to it.
Come on Apple, get on that.
LOL PSX games. Fail. The GPU in the iPhone is crap. The only true gaming device is the PSP.
the iphone literally costs thousands of dollars to use and its only value proposition (here) is simplistic gaming + mobile phone
You're forgetting the iPod Touch (as long as they put the same internals as the 3GS).
PSP = Fail. PSP GO = epic fail.
I'll take a DS lite (and I did) over a PSP. If I can get decent PS1 games on my existing iPhone, then that will suit me.
the ipod touch is not a mobile phone and its value proposition (here) is only simplistic gaming
the other thing to keep in mind is that with both the memory and battery are stuck and with the touch you have to pay for updates and they are not even equal - the phone remains to have more features
now I understand you have a raging hate on for the PSP but you shouldn't let that rage make you go so blind
the PSP has a very rich feature set (flash, skype, location free, etc) and a massive critically acclaimed software library - its software updates have always been free and its memory is in fact expandable, hot swappable and very inexpensive and its battery can be easily changed and expanded
just saying ;)
I don't have raging hate for the PSP... in fact I bought one when it first came out and I liked it. 2 months later and 12 dead pixels... I traded it for a DS + games. I like the looks of the PSP Go, but to be honest, its more of the same, just (in my opinion) pretty. UMDless is great.
Now here is my point.
I have a mobile phone that has the potential to play PS1 games and play them well (as we can see). So it would make sense for me (ME) to utilize my current device I have for gaming, phone and audio device instead of buying a PSP.
You are correct in saying that the PSP is better for gaming because guess what, thats what it was designed to do. Now, if Sony can bring a PSP Go with a phone and features that I am now used to, then I would consider it, but for now my choice is clear.
Just saying!
Some games work very well with the accelerometer like "GALAXY ON FIRE". Adding a d-pad and action buttons would make it play differently possibly for better, possibly for worse.
But, if you play "ISOTOPE" you'd see that even a dual analog design for a snap on wouldn't be enough to play that game.
Whatever happened to the icontrolpad?
http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/23/iphone-getting-game-thanks-to-the-icontrolpad/
I'd buy this in a heartbeat, especially if it had an extended life battery built in.
iControlPad is supposed to come out in September. I suspect it will be released when the new iPod Touch comes out.
Give me a native WipeOut that uses the accelerometer and I'll be happy. I'm honestly not keen on the idea of add-on hardware controllers. Games do not need buttons or D-pads to be fun.
Agreed... not every game requires a D-pad, but bringing an official game pad (in which ever shape or form) + an API, will increase (and not limit) the iPhones potential as I flexible portable gaming device.
True BUT I have real reservations with such hardware. Firstly, do you really want to have to buy additional hardware to play a game? Secondly, will the addition of "traditional" control mean that game developers will "play it safe" and develop games pretty much as they have done for the past 30-years? I tend to see games for the iPhone in much the same way as I do for the Nintendo Wii - it's a platform that requires developers to do things differently and come up with new types of games. It'll certainly take time (just look at the Wii) but I am convinced that developing for the "out of the box" hardware is the way to go rather than relying on additional hardware that allows you to crank out the same old games.
But very few games on the wii use motion controls to any degree of success. Same with the iPhone's touch controls to be honest. One step forwards, two steps back.
Give it time. Very few means that some have succeeded and we certainly won't see more successes if we simply go back to doing what we did before. Personally, I have no interest in fiddling with gamepads.
So what happened to the iControlPad?
its supposedly comming out in september
Yes, because I want my main portable gaming device to cost me a minumum of $120/mo.
I see what you are getting at but you are wrong. If you already have an iPhone then why should it not be your primary portable gaming device if it can be? Or do you really want to have to carry additional devices?
If you don't own an iPhone then clearly buying one simply to play games is nuts.
Your comment is stupid, and you probably couldn't afford $120 a year, nevermind a month.
It's ironic you call my comment stupid, then follow up with that. Try the internet tomorrow, you just aren't winning today.
Then get an ipod touch. Same internals, no monthly fee.
As I can see it doest not even have one analog how come you want them to put TWO ANALOGS STICKS
Anyone here knows the PSP? Buy it if you want buttons!
Who cares how it looks? Emulating a PSX game on your phone is cool, and that's what this is doing. Props to the guys who came up with this!
(PS - I don't own an iPhone, and I HATE Apple, so this is NOT fanboy-ism...)
Then check out the PSX emulator for the Pre.
ya everyone wants to play PSX on portrait mode on there pre... woohooo!!!!
/sarcasm
@ the dumbass above me.
Is there any reason why it can't be done in landscape mode?
Finally what i've been waiting for !!!! thank you !
I'm not a 'hard core' gamer but I wouldn't mind playing old PSX games every now and then on the iphone. Anything that would expand the function or productivity in one instead of having to carry around multiple gadgets would be just awesome. I just wish Verizon carried them..iphones that is. >:(
why not just a get psp?
so you don't another buy device
That thing is sure to slide right into your pocket.
Reason # 6 Why I'll never get an iPhone:
It has the worst gaming experience when playing old school games.
Nuff said.
seriously, why would you want to play 3d games on your phone. I need every bit of juice on my phone to last me the day, from emails and text,to phone calls and IMs. It's understandable if you want to play a simple game like pacman or something to kill some time, but these new games with storylines and career modes are ridiculous. I'll leave those types of games for my ps3.
Better than virtual buttons, at least...
fat hands. fat.
In totality, It seems like a daft idea. Why would you want to play such games on a phone. What the heck is a PSP or a DS/DSi for?
cows eat grass
