Palm hires Apple vet Jeff Zwerner as new SVP of Brand Design
It's no secret that Palm has plenty of Apple veterans in its upper ranks (starting right at the top), and it looks like there now may be even more reminiscing about old times going on during lunch breaks, with the company recently announcing that it has hired Jeff Zwerner as its new Senior Vice President of Brand Design. In addition to working at Apple for a stint from 2001 to 2003 as Creative Director for Packaging and earlier from 1995 to 1996 as a Senior Art Director, Zwerner also founded the San Francisco branch of Factor Design, which has done work for Coca-Cola, Gap, GE, Hewlett-Packard, L.L. Bean, Nike, the Walt Disney Company and, yes, Apple.

Step 1: Fewer creepy cylon chicks hawking your gear
Make that chick get neked...
I wanna see some girl-ongirl-action.
She's actually the Borg Queen.
Really, take a look at a photo of her and look at the Borg Queen.
Its eerie...
"Fewer creepy cylon chicks hawking your gear"
I'm sorry. Caprica Six? Hello?
Palm needs more cylon!
If there was ever an encore with Baltar in a Pre commercial, you *know* every BSG fan on the planet would immediately buy a Pre.
Step 2: Make a commercial that actually shows what the Pre has to offer. All I know from the first commercial is that you have to say Bing when flipping threw it.
BTW, what ever happened to Bing. I hear nothing about it. another failed MS project?
You're just not listening.
Bing just passed Ask Jeeves in terms of market share for search engines. Do you think Ask.com and everything under it is a failure?
Please no more "philanthropist" ads for bing, Lame! ...and no more "philanthropist" either, that show sucks.
Yes, Bing is a failure fanboy. People go to it by default 'cause they are sheep.
I thought Apple owners were sheep, at least that's what the comment threads on engadget tell me.
How did Microsoft get Bing to be Safari's default search?
Hang on, are you suggesting that people who use Windows are sheep?!?
Run now, not sure if you've seen the movie Black Sheep, but the pitch fork carrying Windows mob round here make Black Sheep seem like My Little Pony
Let see if he will help for the next palm, because the pre isn't all that nice.
Talking about looks only.
the pre looks great, but it has a crappy biuld quality and keybord
The build quality is why I went with a Iphone 3GS instead of the Pre. As soon as I started hearing of all the issues and tested one out at the sprint store and actually held it in my hand I was so disappointed. I was definitely looking forward to the Pre until actually getting a hold of one. Very disappointed with the build quality. Feels almost like a kids play toy phone. Also wish the keyboard was a larger HTC style keyboard. Hopefully the next version wont be so cheap.
Yes, if it only had a larger side keyboard and better build quality.
Step 3: Get Palm to stop imitating an iPod when plugged in.
Apple creative minds + Palm way of business = pure win
>> "Apple creative minds + Palm way of business = pure win"
So wait... people slam Apple because they say they are nothing but marketing and creativity. But, looking at Apple sales, they are always through the roof and very profitable. So they must be good at business too.
Let me translate for you:
Minds like the ones that cread the original ipod and imac + non-intrusive policies about the usage of their products = pure win.
I don't know where the photo is from, but it's a horrendous piece of photoshopping.
If you don't know how to do narrow focus with a camera, don't try to emulate the effect in photoshop, it will just look messy like this photo does.
+1
thats really the only thing i noticed about this article. all i could think of it "crappy photoshop, and theres no way they would get that depth of field from that distance even with an f/1.4... not to mention the carpet is in focus closer to the camera but the chair legs arent... and many other mistakes.
who cares...it's an article not a photo gallery
The photo is supposed to add something to the story, or serve as a way of grabbing someones attention, making them curious, and read the article.
It's not supposed to be so horribly distracting that it becomes more interesting than the story itself.
That's exactly what I though when seeing the article. It's the only thing I thought.
"My Hobby: Insisting that [random blog post photos] are photoshopped."
http://xkcd.com/331/
Tilt-shift lenses, Google it.
the only reason i clicked through was to see if anyone brought up this photograph. yuck.
a tilt shift lens would have changed the perspective as well
Terjay, its not a tilt shift lense, you can obviously see the circular pattern around the dude that isn't blured... Even if it was some magic super sharp lense, as pointed out above the inconstancies at the same distances is the give away that its shopped.
not that it matters to anyone that isn't into photography in which case move along and read the article...
and here's how to do it:

Palm rips apple every chance they get but are quick to hire Apple employees. Am I missing something here?
1. Palm has a lot of patents that apple uses, and vice-versa
2. They are COMPETING buissnesses, dont pretend that Apple doesnt rip on palm, they both do...
3. EX- apple employees, just cuz they worked there doesnt mean that theyre stealing ideas
4. you make it sound like Apple OWNS its employees, like theyre somekind of property, WRONG theyre people
@ kamil,
"3. EX- apple employees, just cuz they worked there doesnt mean that theyre stealing ideas"
lol, if you believe that you're nuts.
just tell me WHAT exactly can they steal? i dont expect seeing an EXACT duplicate replica of a comercial of apple in the next few weeks, instead, im going to see a group of people trying to BEAT apple's branding, trying to make it better =! stealing
@ kamil - give me a break. there is nothing in the iPhone that ripped off any ideas from palm phones available at that time or prior besides being able to make a phone call.
@ Devin Brown
i recomend you read this:
http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/28/apple-vs-palm-the-in-depth-analysis/
scroll down a bit
"Take #7,268,775, entitled "Dynamic brightness range for portable computer displays based on ambient conditions," for example -- it covers automatically adjusting display brightness using an ambient light sensor while leaving a user-selected brightness setting alone. Yep, that's exactly how the iPhone does it:"
theres one
"Or how about #7,007,239, "Method and apparatus for accessing a contacts database and telephone services"? Claim 10 is an almost exact description of the iPhone's phone app -- buttons for dialing, call history, contacts, and speed dial that stay on-screen as you toggle between them"
But ex-Apple employees know the inner working of an iPod better then anyone. I don't mean if it uses a Samsung chip or has the feature or that. I mean, they know Apple's stance on how how it gets produced, how to market it, how to get people to 'ooh and aah' while keeping manufacturing it as cheap as possible. If you know how a competitor does thing well (and Apple knows how to sell iPods), it's easy to use that first hand knowledge as a stepping stone for the Pre's/ Palm's business model.
I don't know if that's stealing. But it's a great way to try and tackle the iPhones dominance in the market.
Go Palm!
I've been rooting for Palm ever since Engadget wrote a lengthy open letter suggesting they up their game. I'm getting my Pre in a week and I'm excited!
Palm wants to be like Apple so bad
You mean like....profitable? I want to be like Apple too then. I just can't wear turtlenecks because they chafe my neck.
Step 0. Don't do anything said in the engadget comment section.
Next step: Steve Jobs buys Palm. :P
Well as they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
Limitation is the severest form of flattening.
Sunnyvale start your photocopiers?
Yeah ... pre hired a guy who worked for Apple up until 6 years ago. Real cutting edge ripoff there ... You iDiots are iTards.
@ Crescent
Does the name Rubenstein ring any bells?
You're a dumbass.
He's not a dumbass! He said "iDiots" and.. and.. wait for it.. "iTards"! He's frickin clever!
