Leaked back-of-box chart shows Xbox line winnowing down to Arcade and Elite SKUs
And then there were two? After Microsoft got all cute with us and introduced its current lineup of three concurrent Xbox versions, we thought we'd never get that portion of our limited brain matter back for storing more important things -- like the complicated political structures of Frank Herbert's Dune, for instance. Well, if this recently leaked photo of a revised Xbox 360 Arcade box is any indication, the regular "Xbox 360" SKU is on the outs, to make room for just the Arcade and Elite configurations on each end of the spectrum. Hopefully this means the Elite is also going to shuffle on down to the middle SKU's $300 pricepoint, but we'll have to wait and see. Naturally, Microsoft might just want that third slot for a Project Natal-packing Xbox edition next year, or perhaps this whole different box situation is just a Excel spreadsheet mishap that's gotten way out of hand.

They should do the same for Windows 7.
Forget Su-Xbox Just build yourself an i7 watercooled gaming rig fool! :)
With one less model, that should mean 33 percent less RRoD. Right?
Now click the minus button if you must.
$240 for the 60 gig pro

they did. they only two Win7 SKU's you will see in stores is Professional and Home Premium. stop bitching about it.
If you're confused about OS versions of Windows, you shouldn't be shopping around for them anyway, go buy a manufacturer-built system and enjoy your ignorance.
It's not about 'being confused' about the different versions of Windows 7, it's the fact that Bitlocker (and more importantly) and Bitlocker To Go aren't included in the Professional edition. What the hell is up with that?
Good price point to move the Elite down. I mean the PS3 looked more appetizing to me at that $400 price point, and with Sony more than likely to drop the price of the PS3 down, that would hurt the Elite sales even more I would think
CHRIS D! Are you ok?? I heard there was a big chemical plant fire in Bryan. Hope you're ok!!!!! :*O
Funny, because this can't be true. In our warehouse at Best Buy, we have around 30-40 360 Pro's in inventory, with none more than the 3 Xbox Elites on the floor. Arcades we also have ample supply, around 30-40. Even the GOTY Elite bundle, which is the version of the 4 we do currently have, says "DISCONTINUED" on our inventory site, leaving only the Kung-fu Panda and Indy elite left. We were thinking MS was putting the kabosh on the Elite rather than anything else, the Pro is our highest selling 360.
Well the Elite will now become the bestseller since it will probably be the same price as the Pro was.
it shouldn't be hard for them to move the Elite to $300. the extra 60GB of HDD space and the HDMI cable cost MS very little.
This makes me sad that I paid $480 for my Elite. Ah well.
wtf i seem fake why would ms do that /?? no point i think that natal will be just a add on and a accessories
Probably ready for the Natal SKU. I wonder when the natal SKU comes .
What's even funnier is that it just started as basic/pro back like 3 years ago, then arcade was added in lieu of basic and elite was added, now we're back to two. Essentially basic (on steroids) and pro (on even more steroids).
Microsoft thinks it's a good idea to get rid of their most popular model?
If they drop the price of the Elite to that of the existing Pro, then why not? Think about these three things:
- Those large hard drives become more needed with every passing update.
- At this point in the product lifecycle, the cost of the larger hard drive is somewhat offset by the production savings of only running two lines
- 60gig 2.5" hard drives are becoming a scarcity. 120gig is at the low end of the HD size range for most applications (i.e. laptops) so they are probably becoming the easiest/cheapest hardware to source for production.
That's nothing new. They did it with Windows XP.
i think thtas a great price point hopefully they'll lower the price of the 120 gig hard drive too
I just bought another 360 , A 360 Arcade for upstairs for Media Center and Netflix .. Shhhhh don't tell my Fiancée .. i am going to tell her i won it
Lies and deceit. Why don't you just fast-forward to the divorce.
You have no right to be upset when she explains the "curling iron burn" on her neck.
Damn .. now i already feel guilty .. Scratch the lying part .. got to have a few beers before she gets home : )
You could say you Great Great Uncle Veronica left it in his will.
i don't see why she should be mad. $200 for a media extender and netflix streamer is not a bad deal, plus it can play games (and dvds if you don't have a player at that tv).
I love the guy above me !!!
So i did not lie and she really could care less .. Thought it was cool .. Thanks for the first few comments for getting my head strait
seems likely that the elite will drop to the $300 price point leaving room for natal bundle at the $400 price point... otherwise I don't get it
Wow this is good news i guess. Microsoft is most likely to bring out a new X-BOX 360 system to counter the new Sony Slim PS3 that is going to hit the market soon.
Dune is amazing!!!!
t3h Kwisatz Hederach and I agree.
Maybe it's just a ploy to convince you to buy Elite, since Arcade looks like such a piece of crap when directly compared to Elite...
Just Elites and Arcades? What's the point? Wouldn't it make more sense to ditch the Arcades and slash prices on Elites and Pros?
Not if there will be price cuts. The Arcade SKU is $199.99, if I'm not mistaken, which is less then the Wii at this point (though the Wii comes with Wii Sports). If the Elite becomes the Pro, and the drop the price on the Arcade to say $179.99, it becomes that much more attractive to people looking to finally move up to the current gen. Odds are they're not going to be able to put the Pro down to 180 bucks so it makes sense to keep the Arcade, if you want to keep sales going in this economy.
Are they planning a model that doesn't fry it's little brains out and die?
Look my 20gb 360 died(Best Buy warranty=easy exchange!) on me too but at some point you have to move on and let it go. Stop bringing up the RROD unless its relevant to the article. In other words STFU or stay on the subject!
So is this new Arcade actually an old Arcade? It says it has 256 MB of storage, not 512 MB. Moreover, does that imply that now they are dumping the Falcon's onto the poor Arcade buyers?
it might be my hangover, but thinking back to reading those parts of dune made me motion sick. i think they might be bring down the price of the elite since you can basically get the elite with and arcade and 120gig drive separately and come out cheaper. the only thing missing is the great color
Guys!! If you go to the original size and look at the full size pic, next to Xbox Live it says FREE!
Now there's some news worth reporting!
That would be nice...now...what to do with all those 13 month membership cards I bought.....
Xbox Live has always been free...for Silver access. You pay extra for xbox Live Gold.
If you look below that it advertises a 13 month subscription card...that would be rather stupid if they were making it free but pushed memberships.
Now cut the bullcrap and give me free online gaming.. just standard online gaming shouldn't be an 'extra' where a monthly fee is due, come on; charge me for extras but this should be included per default.
I'd like to see a $199 model with the specs of the current Pro. That would be tempting....
I've never had a RRoD yet.
wait does it say Xbox LIVE is free?
what did it used to say on the old box?
Xbox Live includes Silver level access, which has always been free. You still pay for xbox Live Gold.
Well it's all good if they will only make 2 xboxs just as long as they don't change the color of the elite, hopefully they will add more colors :)
i believe it does say live is free and it doessnt look like the old one did looking at the imager
