New Maemo 5 screen shows fascinating, unique array of settings
Nokia may have shot down rumors that it was planning to completely replace its Symbian OS with Maemo, but that hasn't taken all the shine off the mobile OS, and a new, lone screenshot has now surfaced to further stoke those flames of anticipation (it's okay, you can admit it). As you can see above, however, it's not exactly the most exciting of screens to capture, but is supposedly the real deal and not just another SDK sourced image.

i think maybe they SHOULD replace s60 with this
so can we take the graphics drivers from maemo5 and port them to the pre?
anyone know if i am even making sense, as i am not sure. same chips, linux based OS, possible magic?
eldar states that this is the most impressive device in 2009
Eldar would say the same about horse manure if it was shipped from Espoo.
Where is Sony?
At GamesCom...
So, with 75% of battery you get 1h of active use ? sounds awesome ;)
If it's the standard Gnome-Power-Manager Package like I think it is, then the actual image doesn't reflect the charge left. For instance in Ubuntu, my power meter turns yellow when there's less then 30% power left and the image is very similar to that one. Of course the level at which this state is set is also changeable, so who knows what it's actually set to when this picture was taken.
Yeah, why *shouldn't* Nokia replace Symbian with Maemo, at least for all their touch screen phones? S60 is fine for non-touch devices, but for anything else (I'm looking at YOU, 5800 Xpress), it's super-frustrating to use.
That's great but nokia only have (currently) three touchscreen s60 phones, and tonnes of non touch devices
S60 will not get replaced any time soon, but will move a bit more towards the mid range whilst maemo will only be seen on the next flagship and maybe one other device
there really is no other non touch smartphone OS around that rivals S60 -except for perhaps the blackberry OS, which will never be seen on a device not made by RIM
WM Standard? Nobody hears much about it, but apparently it's good.
@phoenix:
WM Standard is quite good. I just bought my first real S60 phone (E75) and it's OK once you get used to it but it requires far too many clicks.
Looks like a sweet OS.
*can't wait*
Google: sbsettings
You should be able to close or hide boxes like this by tapping anything outside the box as it's already states to be one of the maemo 5 guidelines if you are wondering how to make it disappear.
This pic is by eldar who is owner of mobile-review.com and he have said that there will be more pics tomorrow and preview of rover/N900 in announcement day. That seems to be Nokia World, September 1-2.
Looks cool. I think Symbian ^4 will also be cool, especially after their brainstorm project.

"3/4 of battery is enough for 1 hour of active use? Or am i wrong?
It doesn't say that the battery was full in the beginning...
The UI screenshot looks pretty outdated. Even the buttons are not aligned..."
Which explains the two weird things I saw on that screenshot.
That one icon bottom right with the drive and down pointing arrow...is that the one that appears when you jailbreak an iPhone? Looks like it.
Umm, you mean bottom LEFT?
Could be, but that Icon was originally from Gnome/Ubuntu. It's been there since before the iPhone was even sold. Seeing as how Maemo runs a GTK environment, it's very likely you will see a lot of Gnome Icons, most of which were there before other groups made their own similar icons.
I hope it has a RESPONSIVE touch screen. I don't care if it's multi or single touch as long as the UI works and the overall experience of using it isn't laggy. I'm THIS close to buying the HTC Hero (the videos look good to me), but I still have a soft spot for Nokia somehow. Even though many times I've just wanted to throw my S60 Nokia handset against a brick wall. Nokia phones have such a good set of services, hardware and functionality but sometimes I just feel they're just messing with you.
Curse you Nokia if you let me down even once anymore! Bring forth the video previews!
I hope it has a resistive screen, so I can use a stylus when I want to. Previous Maemo version switched the size of UI elements (and on-screen keyboard I believe), depending on whether you were using a stylus or finger.
Eldar says its extremely responsive. Hope so too.
Merge Maemo and Symbian (unrealistic? yeah)
Maemo UI + Symbian app library.
Future Maemo and Symbian ^4 will be based on QT, so expect the apps to be inter-operable.
I wouldnt be surprised if Maemo is rebranded Symbian at this point, at least on the high end.
Hmm I am thinking that this can't be a direct replacement for S60 in all cases because of the hardware requirements - older phones won't be able to hang...or they'll hang often.
Maemo OS2008 taxes the N810 when more than one browser window is open. Unbelievable how much slower things get when Flash is thrown into the mix. In either case, really glad to see Nokia joining the Nice UI Club. Now we'll just wait for WinMo7 and we'll be all set.
So will this work on my romping stomping n800?
Should be possible...
"MER, the project that ports Maemo 5 to N800/N810 and other devices to present on Maemo Summit, Day 1, by Carsten Munk #maesum9:41 AM Aug 11th from web"
What's so "unique"? I'm missing something...
I wouldn't mind a maemo 5 device.
Best mobile browser was the one in maemo 4.
Just add a better proc (tegra for graphics) and more ram/rom and it would rock.
I want this right now!
update on battery
"Hmmm, i used rover for several months, so standby 2 days, active use arounnd 6 hours, like video etc"
device will debut on nokia world 09 on september 2
Best mobile browser was the one in maemo 4.
