MacCores iTab Mini mod gives us a taste of the future
Given that September 9 is unlikely to finally reveal the fabled Apple tablet, this might be the nearest thing we have to it for a while yet -- and it has one other advantage: it's real. The iTab Mini is a mod project of the "more time and energy than sense" variety (our favorite kind) that melds together a 12.1-inch resistive touchscreen display with the remnants of an old PowerBook and a decidedly modern Core 2 Duo 2.16GHz, 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD spec. The outcome is, in a word, stunning. You can find a full run-through of the build at the read link.

I still think typing on a tablet will be a tedious and painful task.
Further, I think it is completely impractical. The assumption surely has to be that the device will be held in one had and interacted with by the other so typing of any variety is going to be difficult, be it with an on-screen keyboard or some form of handwriting recognition. I certainly do not see any form of large-scale data entry being performed on such a device.
The only practical method of typing on a tablet even devised was with the round keyboards on the UMPC.
Anything else will require a stylus.
I think that typing on mobile phone on physical keyboard is "tedious and painful" but everybody do it...
Wow, I can't resist the temptation to type on my computer screen while filling it with smudges and finger prints. Obviously it makes sense on the iPhone as there's no space for a keyboard and mouse (and no, these small, cramped keyboards don't count) but come on, people: do we really have to suffer this at our homes and offices too?
I think there's never going to be an Apple tablet. Maybe some sort of device with a touch screen that replaces the mouse and keyboard makes more sense as it provides the advantages of a touch screen without having to smudge the main screen or take screen real estate.
Handwriting recognition in Mac OS
Seriously, how did this get a high rating?
Looks like a great mod, and a great way to breath life back into an old machine.
Maybe solutions like this will allow us to type with a single hand on a multi-touch tablets with a reasonable speed.

It's just a technical demo, but based on the already well working hardware device, so very promising.
I don't know how it is to type without tacticle feedback, but tablets are the future and there will be solutions for the keyboard problem, too.
There's a company who sells these types of tablet macbooks: http://www.axiotron.com/index.php?id=modbook
They look quite nice, but I could never live without a keyboard.
Well on Windows OneNote is great with a tablet, I just wish OS X had something similar.
should come with ssd option ..
Sooner or later, Apple are going to run out of excuses to put "i" in front of words.
Sooner or later, Apple are going to run out of words to put "i" in front of :-)
More memory would be great and the virtual keyboard looks kinda cool.
The keyboard you're seeing is included in every mac under the international tab and input menu of system preferences, it's called the keyboard viewer, cheers.
Oh, and a few of these things would look great mounted on the wall :)
that looks like it is 3" thick. needs to be kindle thick
Axiotron Modbook ring a bell anyone?
Yes: as a better version of this.
I have a Gateway m675 (m625?) tablet that becomes a very useful Hackintosh once you swap out the built in WiFi card for a $30 atheros one. It looks just like this, except the pen doesn't work anymore. I use a wireless keyboard and mouse (had to buy a usb bluetooth adapter & Apple mouse & keyboard).
I will still buy an Apple one the first day they are released if there is no monthly contract.
our forum member, wei new baby!

why don't they mod a macbook air?
Why does it have to be strictly a "iTablet" why can't it be a tablet-mac like tablet pcs. just have a swivel touchscreen so that you can still have a physical keyboard. I don't understand why not of the big podcast hosts and such ever think of this.
That carbon effect duck tape looks classy !
Quack.
I think this would be the closest thing that someone could actually purchase http://www.axiotron.com/index.php?id=modbook
They never mention the axiotron modbook when the subject of a mac tablet is discussed. I love mine, and wouldn't replace it with a mac netbookish tablet.
i'm unclear on why everyone assumes this size tablet would be held in one hand and operated on with just the other hand. that would assume you're always standing or sitting/laying down and holding it up with one hand. that's like assuming you hold up a netbook with one hand always when you're typing.
this is decent sized tablet. you put it on the table or in your lap. with an anti-glare screen, there will be no problem seeing the image no matter where it's placed and you use two hands on the keyboard if you want or maybe just two fingers. it's ok, it's multitouch.
as far as this "stunning" achievement...
i like how engadget thinks this is the neatest thing. it's cool but it's simply a fatass tablet cobbled together using a bunch of existing hardware and software. just wait until apple releases a slick, ultra-thin tablet with a dedicated multitouch os. engadget and its readers will do nothing but bash it because it lacks an extra usb port and has no removable battery.
There's this, but there is also the Axiotron Modbook: http://www.axiotron.com/index.php?id=modbook
Not Bad at all for a DIY Mod
I want the wallpaper.
Well, you can buy on of these
