ASUS' Eee PC roadmap leaks: Ion-boasting netbooks, multitouch T91 coming soon?
If two slides leaked to the Eeeuser.com forum are to be believed, ASUS has some pretty interesting -- though not terrifically surprising -- netbooks on the horizon. The slides, which are apparently the company's roadmap for US products for the next two quarters, are chock full of refreshed product information. It looks like we're going to be seeing a brand new Eee PC, the 12-inch 1201N, which will bring NVIDIA's Ion platform to the line for the first time, with an Atom N270 CPU, 2GB RAM, a 250GB HDD, Bluetooth and 802.11n WiFi, running $499 for release in mid-October. Other than that, we can expect to see the 1005HA-P with the N280 processor and a 250GB HDD option running Windows 7 also arriving in October for $399, and the 1005HA-M with the N270 processor, a 250GB hard drive, and Windows 7 Starter Edition for $349. Finally, Netbook News is also reporting some new 1008HA models not listed on the slides, as well as a multitouch, Windows 7-running T91 convertible tablet with a 32GB SSD priced at $549. There's no timeline mentioned for this one, but we'll keep our ears to the ground expectantly. The other slide is after the break; hit the read link if you want the full details on each model.

small pet peeve I know, but i HATE it when OEMs do the 'good, better, best' bullshit. the 'good' product very rarely is
Well, it's good enough for me; the only thing I feel my 701 4G is lacking in is screen size and resolution, and the 'good' option has it beat in that and a few other categories, while meeting the price point I paid less than 2 years ago. Granted, I'd probably spring the extra $30 to double up the battery life, if it were much more expensive, I'd probably settle for the 'good'.

How are they putting N270 with ION? This I must see.
They already have a netbook with an N270 paired with a 9300, N10-J. I don't see why this would be surprising. I think the Lenovo S12 is supposed to be a 270+Ion combo as well.
Unfortunately, that was more like a fatheavybook.
I am itching to see more CULV ultraportables in the 11" or smaller range, like the recently released Acer 1410/1810 series. A CULV with ION would be even better, but the cost would be too much probably.
wtf. why ION only in the 12"? at that size you might as well go for CULV. what I really need is a smaller 10" that is HD capable
Where is Super Elite?
What happened to 8.9" netbooks?
I now. People's obsession with bigger = better and manufactures trying to upsell netbooks pretty much has spelled death to the original idea of cheap ultra-portable netbook. It seems that Dell is the only one selling it, the mini 9. Everybody else is doing at least 10" and above. Next thing we know, 17" "netbook."
I love the 9" form factor as well. The 10" netbooks start feeling like real laptops in terms of size. I really hope dell keeps making the mini 9
It is rather ridiculous. According to Newegg, Asus is only making one 8.9" screen still, and it's PURPLE.
Most people can't type on them. 10" is the sweet spot for many as it allows for a keyboard that is actually usable.
no, dell has phased out the mini 9 as well. Big mistake, I like my mini 9.
Just chiming in support for the 9" form-factor. I love my Mini 9, and while the keyboard can be a pain sometimes, the whole idea behind having a netbook is to have something I can toss in my suitcase on vacation, toss in the car when I know I'll be waiting somewhere for 30 minutes, use easily on a bus, etc. If you're complaining about using a 8-9" netbook because it's annoying to use for 3-4 hours a day, then you're an idiot. This is supposed to be an ultra-portable type of computer. If you want a 12-13" screen, then a solution already exists, and it's called a laptop.
If the Mini 9 wasn't a 9", I wouldn't have bought it.
I've used 8.9" and 10.2" screens. Using 8.9" feels like I have tunnel vision, I'm staring at such a small field of view. 10.2" is just borderline acceptable. It shouldn't make that much difference, but to me it does.
Great! I thought everyone has totally forgotten the the early iterations of netbooks with 7inch displays. I agree, 8.9inch models are great in terms of portability. 10 inch models which are pretty much the norm now are a bit too big to just put in a bag and carry around IMO. They're more like laptops now. Anyway I love my 8.9" Acer Aspire One. Totally worth it!
hmm.. Ion + culv + 11.6 inch + higher resolution screen + win 7 = my perfect netbook
Amen. I'm really looking forward to the Acer 1810T. 11.6in 1366x768 screen and a cheap CULV. No Ion or 7, but it's about as close as I've seen to my perfect "netbook." 2GB of RAM and a 250GB HDD don't hurt either.
Agreed.
I already have that Acer 1810T (actually, it's the rebranded Canadian Gateway EC1803h model, but it's pretty much identical) and it's really nice. Windows 7 is beautiful on it.
I almost can't believe it has CULV, 4500MHD (better than GMA950), HDMI, 250 gb, 3 gb ram, Gigabit lan, AGN wifi all for only CAD$450 (after $50 off).
Take all that and put ION on it, assuming it doesn't increase the cost or decrease battery life *too much*, and it'd be even more awesome.
Elite is better than best.
This will be the Nokia Booklet 3G for me. These EEe are still cheap plastic and built for a short lifetime...
I just can't stand this *buy crap, trash it one or two year later* way of living anymore. I prefer save my money longer, and get a device i'm happy with.
any netbooks (10.1"-11.6") out there with a 100% scale keyboard?
The Gateway LT3103. I prefer mine to these netbooks for the keyboard and 11.6" 1366x768 screen.
how about a faster CPU/GPU in the T91?
I say that we email Asus until they put Pineview with Ion. Amen?
What's their email??
im drawing a line right now, anything >10" is NOT a friggin netbook

Ridiculous. How can anything be better than "best". By the very nature, 'best' means best.
Yeah, but what about the one that's better than the best one. It's like the different sizes of infinity.
manufacturers: fuck atom.
culv all the way. i want my sub 500 11" with dual cores based on core 2 architecture, not this ridiculously shitty atom bullshit shit..
You're asking for notebook performance on the cheap? Goodness, getting pick, aren't we?
Anyone else noticed that the "best" and the "elite" have glossy screens while the good and the better have matte screens?
That's BS
I'm really waiting for some 10" ion based netbooks! Also, not liking the 1024x600 on these 10" screens. Was using one with XP installed and 1024x600 is just simply not enough...
Yeah, Dell has a 720p 10" netbook. It isn't remarkable in most respects, but it proves that you can have a nice round resolution on a 10" screen.
Then hook it up to an external monitor. I was running my 1920 x 1080 display off of my Dell Mini 9 the other day, and it worked just fine. Otherwise...it's an ultraportable, why do you need a higher resolution? On the go, you should only be looking at web pages, playing music/movies, playing some lite games, etc. It's not like you're looking to edit HD video on this thing...
I agree that you don't need super high resolution in an ultra portable. I'm just saying 600 vertical resolution looks HORRIBLE and cramped in Windows XP. 1024x768 is the absolute minimum for XP IMHO.
This is of course is just my opinion which is why I'm waiting/hoping for a 10" ion based netbook with a higher resolution screen. It will happen and I will have my cash ready!
Hmm, well I'm using Windows 7 on mine, though I don't think that'd make a HUGE difference. While I agree 1024 x 600 is hard to use for a long period of time, I think any higher resolution would make text/objects too small (until Windows comes with system-wide scaling). Keep in mind that it has to be a widescreen aspect ratio as well, so 1024 x 600 was the closest one that made sense compared to 1024 x 768.
A side by side with competing models would be more helpful...
Dumb question: Does anything think that the mentioned 1008HA tablet would be a better alternative to HP's tablet? I'd love to pick one up by the end of the year, but I don't know if Win 7 will play nice.
Netbooks are slowly getting to the point of "portable, affordable, usable computing", but I still want to see the following things combined in one netbook:
1) nVidia ION chip
2) CULV Intel Core 2 CPU
3) Windows 7 Home Premium
4) 12" screen
5) 2GB RAM
6) Bluetooth
7) HDMI out
8) Built-in 3G
9) $399
It's probably that last point that'll be the kicker for me. The netbook I want would easily cost $650 or so, and at that point, you start wondering why you're spending so much for so little performance compared to a normal laptop (the key goal was to be cheap).
And it's not like I'm going to be gaming on the thing or anything, but it's just nice to have it all in there. I'll probably have to wait a year or two to get what I want. =/
so basically I'm in the market for the 1005ha-p, and if I wait until this new 1005ha-p is released, the only thing that will be different is that it will have a bigger hard drive and windows 7 starter and cost a little more? No ion planned for it anytime soon?
I am waiting for the T91 but did not see it in the slides.
