LG GW880 leaks out, runs Android on China Mobile
It's sort of interesting that China is where all the Android action seems to be going down lately, but here we are, staring at the LG GW880 -- essentially the company's first Android phone. Of course, "Android" in this case means China Mobile's custom WiFi-less OPhone platform, which means we'll probably never see this guy outside of the Middle Kingdom, but it's a fair look at what LG's handset designers think an Android set should look like: 3.5-inch WVGA touchscreen, 256MB RAM, GPS, and a five megapixel camera. Honestly? We're hoping LG has grander plans for those other Android phones it has planned for this year -- we'll just have to wait and see. Hit the read link for a few more shots in the meantime.

Why no wifi?
Laws
No WIFI is not Ophone OS's limitation, the OS has built in support for WIFI, but only with WAPI encryption standard, for instance, the Ophone OS equipped Lenovo O1 has WIFI capability. Major international brands don't want to develop phones that replace WPA/WAP2 with WAPI.
Looks just like a...
LG GW880
and you thought I was going to say an iPhone ripoff...
you did say that in that sentence
god, I am soooo tired of these "slate" phone form factors with the huge black bezels on the top and bottom, and only a couple buttons. Why can't they put more than 3 buttons on it, seriously? For better or worse, I have an iPhone, and the thing I like most about my gf's blackberry is that I can just start typing someone's name on the hardware qwerty, and it'll bring up their contact info so that all I have to do is hit the send button to call them.
You can do that on my N97's qwerty too, and on my second phone, which is an HTC Hero and happens to run android too while being much cooler, than this thing, having a great WIFI and sporting the excellent Sense UI, you can do that too (useing anyone of the virtual k-boards): you just have to download a free app called "SpellDial".
My operator gave me this HTC Hero in excange of the iPhone 3GS I had bought from it 6 days before when I returned because it sorely disappointed me, and I have been in love with it from day one.
Come on T-Mobile, we need some decent handsets. Even China is outdoing you.
Nokia N900 coming soon.
"It's sort of interesting that China is where all the Android action seems to be going down lately"
Why is it interesting? The smaller phone companies in china and jumping into a FREE OS to cut costs and maximize profits.
wait that came out wrong, im talking about proprietary carrier OS.
"The smaller phone companies in china"
China Mobile alone has about 500 million subscribers, which is more than the entire population of the United States and Japan combined (quoted from InformationWeek article entitled "China Mobile Intros 'Ophones'", dated Aug 31, 2009).
This looks really nice!
LG are slowly but surely getting the whole "minimal deliciousness" thing down.
Now if only Verizon would get something Android.
it looks a lot like htc pro2
no search button? isn't that on the android spec for new 1.5 devices?
LG is also deeply involved in WinMo it seems:
