Official: XPERIA X2 launching Q4, Windows Mobile 6.5 onboard (video)
If you've been waiting with bated breath for some real news on the XPERIA X2, wait no longer. News has just broken that the re-styled, gutted refresh of Sony Ericsson's popular (and expensive) X1 is due to hit "selected markets" in Q4. According to a post on SE's Xperiancers blog, the company is in talks with various carries right now, and will be detailing the plans in the coming weeks. Additionally, the blog delivers some info on the device itself, calling out its 8.1 megapixel camera, inclusion of a standard 4GB microSD card, and 13 pre-loaded "panels" in its reworked Windows Mobile skin (which appears to have a new SDK for the forthcoming OS update). Oh, and speaking of Windows Mobile, it'll be shipping with 6.5 onboard. To learn much, much more, check the two videos after the break. We'll also be grabbing an up close and personal hands-on with the device in a few moments, so keep your inter-set tuned to the Engadget channel.

Is this coming to any US carriers?
no.
The guys in the video...
They from Heroes!
pron, is there a panel for that?
Does it really matter? Because I don't think too many people care. People are abandoning
WinMo phones faster than you could type. WinMo marketshare has plunged to a single
digit for good reason.
Looks nice.
Oh and before the anti WinMo brigade chimes in: Yes, I know WinMo isn't the prettiest which is why every major manufacturer skins it these days. Do try to keep up.
Keep up with what, the fact that the skin is a poor veneer whose cover is blown, thrusting you into a bevy on non finger friendly apps, the second you veer beyond the few skinned applications shown in all the dolled up press shots?
Damn, that looks pretty smooth, what sort of processor is this thing rocking? Kinda gives you a glimpse of what the X3 will be like when its finalized. Seems really polished rather than the eXperiment 1.
Now if only this thing wouldn't require me giving my first born to Sony to purchase.
X3 with wm7?
X3 with Andriod I believe.
X3 is rumoured to be Android based I think, without a physical keyboard. It'll probably be announced soon as it was pre-announced by expansys a few weeks ago.
I really, really want the X3...
OMG, it's like so totally freakin' awesome that I think I just jizzed in my pants.
Not!
"Not"?
What the hell is this? 1993?
it's 2009. have a look at a calendar. i say what i want when i want.
Well aren't you a rebel....I bet your 13-year old girlfriend loves those 5 hairs you have growing on your chin.
Hmmmm. I'm stuck in the 90's and I'm a rebel and pedophile because I used the the term "Not". I see the assholes are out in full effect today.
Actually I was referring more to "i say what i want when i want."
Very sleek!
If only Android was in it..
Why exactly do you wish Android was in it?
@RemDX
Obviously because Android is great and WinMo sucks. Actually, he probably just prefers Android to WinMo.
But hey, if you prefer WinMo then guess this phone's for you and nothing against that but why the need to be all sarcastic..
Awesome. Just in time for an upgrade methinks :)
"Selected Markets" = Asia and Europe.
Once again the European market gets the best technology first.
If we didn't have so many cheap a$$es here in the US who cry if they can't get a smartphone for under $100 on some cocka-mammy 2 year agreement and were willing to pay what the technology is truly worth, then maybe we would have access to such sweetness.
We didn't get the iPhone until 3G.
We didn't get the Zune until HD.
We still haven't got the Pre.
And $1 = €1.
What are you talking about? The touch pro 2 is $350 with agreement in the us.
And this is basically a TouchPro2 with d-pad. The keyboard confi will the one ATT uses for the TouchPro2 also.
Nice SonyEricson Branded HTC phone! Yes, HTC made this phone for SonyEricson.
@kjb434 You sure about that? I heard that the X2 will be manufactured by either a Asustek or a Foxconn subsidiary. The rumor is that SE wasn't all that satisfied with the X1 build quality and that HTC seemed to focus too much on the HTC branded phones.
Europe is getting screwed with prices though.
PS3 Slim:
$299
€299
@kjb434 : No, foxconn did.
Stop talking before you embarrass yourself.
the 2 videos supposed to be about the phone but 3/4 of the time you see guys, what a stupid hand on.
I'm stuck between this and the N900?
which one will be more powerful?
Probably the N900.
i cant wait till this comes out.
The xperia x1 is my favorite WM phone to date, and i have tried
Treo Pro
Touch Pro
Magician
Treo 750
Wing
Incite
xperia just owns all of them hands down.
Hopefully this one will be just as good, with a great batterylife again.
I joined the WinMo family earlier this year when I purchased the X1a unlocked. It's a very nice phone. WinMo, 6.1 pro at least, is an odd creature. In its barest form, it is a mess; it is like they built the OS for a PC with phone features as an afterthought. Although, it become very usable when programs, mods, and tweeks are applied to help it out. XDA-fourms have become my new home just so that I can squeeze every ounce of performance out of the X1. I just installed Garmin Mobile XT /w NA maps and its going to replace my standalone GPS. I want to flash the phone with WinMo 6.5, but I hear there are still many bugs that they have to work out for the X1. It's nice to see that SE is continuing with a strong hardware. You have to hand it to SE and HTC for being able to bring out so much from WinMo phones out of the box.
Phones owned prior:
HTC G1 - so many apps by third party developers, very flexible, ugly as sin
iPhone 3G and 3Gs -
SonyEricsson P1i - Very good and flexible OS, Symbian UIQ, underpowered, good developer community, my favorite phone features.
SonyEricsson P910i - No 3g, no wi-fi, good camera, very good phone interface, no enough power for PDF's
SonyEricsson T610i - Nice powerful dumb phone, borders on being smart.
Hp iPAQ h6325 - sad PDA with an identity crisis. This phone sucked.
Palm Treo 650 - awesome phone for it's day, no .mp3 ringtone options, bugged out and then eventually died, wi-fi, sucked but was there.
Palm Treo 600 - no wi-fi, no edge
SonyEricsson T68i - one of the first phones that started my love affair with SE phones. Add-on camera, BT, voice dialing and answering
Older phones not worth mentioning
The X1 owns hardware-wise, but the OS is give and take. Some of my older phones own has features that even the X1 still needs to have.
Sony has way too much money to constantly use the real world market for experiments
Will wait for the X3 with Android.
I'll drink to that.
The X3 is suppose to be Android based, the "Rachel" if I remember correctly. Once again Sony screams with made potential, and if this is any indication at what they'll be bringing to the X3, we will have a winner. However, SE marketing, price points, RLS DATES, all are massive questions and I'm not sure whether I can put myself through the trouble of waiting on one of these devices again when by the time it releases, the market is waaaaay ahead of it.
what's RLS DATES? release date?
The 2nd guy sounds like Joe Buck.
It looks nice but i just dont really see the point in setting panels on a sort of times.
so when ur texting or doing something important it just pops up.
should be awsome if this one had android with the sense UI (altough the sense UI is a bit slow and still buggy)
btw, does this one have a capasative touchscreen? because if you look at the vids it sure looks like it!
What processor is in this.
Does anyone else notice that some of the icons look like they are ripping off various Apple and Android icons from within the interface? That is odd for Sony
yeh, but there will allways be some things that look the same.
amazing cant wait to get my hands on one was tired of the x1 any way
Do you think it will have the $600/$700 price tag again? I am sure the wife will buy it just like the X1 but it would be nice to get a suggested price.
Which GPU does it have? A8 Cortex w/ hardware acceleration? That would make for a hard decision between X2 and N900, but I'm leaning slightly toward N900 for the Maemo experience.
Aparently it is!!! according to pdadb.net this is the new X2. And it features the new snapdragon chipset and an 8MP camera!!!!!
i think we can safely say...the XPERIA is the originator or one of the pioneers of "multiple homescrees" on a mobile device
