The first thing you notice about FujiFilm's €499
Real 3D W1 camera is its size. It's big -- big in the way that bloggers see main stream media journalists as big. And the industrial design is straight-up Cold War. Still, it delivers 3D without special glasses and does so with surprisingly realistic detail -- it really does work. Yeah, you have to position yourself oh so carefully just in front of FujiFilm's €349 FinePix 3D Viewer or printed photos courtesy of a FujiFilm web service, but the novelty might be worthwhile for those with money to burn. It begins shipping to Europe and likely beyond in late September. Check the video demonstration from IFA and let Germania wash over you.
I wonder if a proximity sensor could solve the fixed-viewing-distance problem?
The chic was pretty good looking, pity she isnt a part of the staff :(
Detecting the viewer's distance would be the easy part, most likely. The hard part would be making a display with adjustable viewing distances.
Great to see a better preview of this. As a 3D enthusiast, I can't wait to pick one up. It's a definite novelty that you can view the photos without the need for any special glasses. I've been having a lot of success with the 3D Camera iPhone app. They have some sample 3D shots here: http://www.juicybitssoftware.com/3dcamera/3d-photo-gallery/

3D is everywhere.......
IPhone camera is better than this, just like it is one step ahead of the world, better than nokia, everything! Microsoft sux, iphone and apple rules, nubs
I knew this post couldn't go by without an fangirl. go back to the closet and play with your icraps with the othe fangirls.
Thar be no girlz on the internetz!
Third!
don't you mean 3d?

PS, apple is one step ahead of the world!
Nah - the first thing I noticed is why people are starting on new technology when they can't get FRICKEN' CELL PHONE CAMERAS RIGHT.
You can get a phone with a decent camera.
Just get ready to pay $500 for it.
You didn't think that 2 megapixel camera on your LG was meant to take beautiful pictures?
Did you?
because camera phones are limited.
Considering that you don't want them that bulky, you're not gonna get much until the technology improvesss
and plus, not like fujifilm makes phones anyhow.
I like 3D, but I don't think they should do any more work on cell phone cameras until we solve world hunger.
Cellphone camers would be great if the censor size was larger than 1". A DSLR's sensor size can go up to 3". Its really hard to compete with a 3" sensor with your limited by a form factor that can't allow for the same size. The lenses are also so small less light can be captured. Cellphone cameras will always suck unless your using a cellphone that's a bit bigger than average. However, as long as people like small, cameras won't be so good. I mean, my regular-calls and texting samsung phone that's 1/3rd the size of the iPhone won't look nearly as good.
I posted a video of this camera here: http://techvideoblog.com/ifa/fujifilm-3d-vga-camcorder/ I'll post my recorded sample using it by tomorrow.

Good. I've wanted to get one extra dimension into my photos, but I have never been able to do it.
Why are you giving us the prices in Euros? Some of us are curious enough to want to see the prices in USD but too lazy to go to Google.
www.lmgtf.... ah nevermind.
Good. I've always wanted to get an extra dimension into my photos, but I have never been able to do it. Now I can.
I'm kinda iffy this is really "3-D" or some sort of gimmick.
I mean, how "3-D" can ink on paper look.
When I was watching the video, they looked like normal pictures to me.
I think this might be a bit of placebo here.
This is as "3-D" as MMS is on the iPhone in the United States.
That's because you need a special screen to view them in 3D. You're only going to get 2D on a normal screen.
Okay.
But that still doesn't justify the paper means.
We've had stereo sound for years. Now it's time for stereo(scopic) images.
"I mean, how "3-D" can ink on paper look.

Translation: "2D video of 3D Picture look 2D, lolwut"
The 3D prints have both views printed in alternating vertical stripes. Then there is a film on top of the paper that has vertical lenses. When you hold the photo at a certain distance, the film makes sure one eye sees one image and the other eye sees the other image. Since each eye sees a different view, the picture looks 3D.
This technique has been around for decades. In the 70s I had story books with lenticular 3d images on the cover.
I had a film camera that took 3D pictures in the early 90's (it took four pictures at once). You had to send the film off to get the prints made.
What's new here is the digital camera. You get to see the 3D image right away on the camera, and you can take as many pictures as you like without worrying about the cost (assuming you have already paid for the camera). You only pay if you order prints.
Who can tell me that what's tne meaning of 3D?
Is meaning we can see the dofferent pictures in different side?
Old school meets new technology. Stereoscopes have been around since the 1800's. Nothing new here. Ooh, but wait! It's got touch screen!!! I agree with some of the posters-you can't get 3D on paper (that is: not in one picture-the early stereoscopes simply used two pictures, one slightly different, put them in the right place, and let you look at one with the left eye and the other with the right, voila, 3D) without glasses or some sort of optical device, I can't imagine how it'd work. But that screen looked cool on my 2D monitor, right at the end I saw some movement which suggested 3D. Crumby vid though. Tripod it next time if you can't hold it steadier.
Oops, just read about the lenticular images. Sounds cool. I'd like to see it.
We took pictures with the camera and displayed them in the Nvidia booth at PAX last weekend (viewing on a normal monitor believe using the app included with the Nvidia 3d vision driver installer). You can use cheap anaglyph glasses or the Nvidia shutter glasses. The image really looks great and was well received by attendees. I have not seen a printed 3d image or viewed the image on the Fuji viewer
I don't live in Japan but I was able to purchase the camera online here:

It should get to me in time for Christmas! :)
