HTC Tattoo spotted on video, stripped of faceplates
Somebody's tracked down HTC's new Tattoo handset and managed to unceremoniously strip it off its faceplates on video, providing our first real look at the hardware "IRL." It looks good, but not too good -- certainly not out of the league of HTC's other Android handsets. Sadly, the clip doesn't show the phone in action, so if you were looking for usability fodder, you'll have to look elsewhere. Vid is after the break.

After using an HTC Diamond for the last year, all I can say is that I am done with small screens. This thing will be a pain to get used to.
The camel is strong, and lovable. !
When you turn it on does it go: "Da plane boss! Da plane!"
The HTC Diamond was the worst cell phone I tried bar none.
Luckily I managed to sell it after less than a week I bought it, losing only 60 euros.
after that I got the HTC TouchHD which I still have a 11 month and which has been a real pleasure to use every day.
Recently , in exchange of an iPhone 3gs (which disappointed me) I got myself an HTC Hero and although the screen is just about the same size as that in the old and terrible Diamond, this Hero it has proved to be a real joy to use, at least on a par with my old and trusty TouchHD whose screen is much bigger (and probably better)
Even if my employers a month ago provided to me a Nokia N97 which (now after new ROMs and updates) is a mighty fine phone and has a bigger screen and even a qwerty k-board, the Hero has become my favorite phone and the only one I always want with me.
What is important is not so much the screen size but the sensitivity of the screen and specially the OS , and the Hero with its Andrid/Sense UI, scores top points on both fields.
This Tatto seems to be a cheper (and uglier) version of the Hero: I don't know how much it's going to cost, but unless the difference in price is going to be dramatic, I would suggest to anybody to save a more few pennies and get an Hero instead.
It's really worth it, honestly: Ive never seen anybody who after playing with it a little , did'nt get truly impressed.
It would be a downgrade from my G1.
The G1 and this have completely different target demo's.
Uh, that's the point, genius. This is the downgrade from the G1/Hero/Magic, because not everyone can afford HTC's top-of-the-line hardware.
I would so use that without a faceplate on :3
The only thing that could keep my away from this is the screen res. They could've slap a 480x320 screen in it. Besides that, it looks like a pretty cool alternative for people who can't afford HTC Hero.
it's only £15 less...
@Phoenix - Making up our own prices are we? No price has been announced yet, but the only estimates out there put it around US$300 unlocked, which is a hell of a lot more than £15 less.
i dont need "usability fodder". i expect the same excellent htc quality i get from all of their phones RESISTIVE-OR-NOT kthnx.
I was just about to say that. Engadget you need to respect your readers.
The removable fascias remind me of Nokia's XPress On covers of yore. This is a cheap phone which will eventually have hundreds of 3rd party covers available for it. If it is successful, it will bring the Android platform to people who aren't in the market for a smartphone per se. So in that sense it is competing directly with S60 and Nokia in more ways than one.
Small screen... no thanks! My next phone needs to have a screen larger than my iPhone.
@Spooner
I thought the same, and thats why (nearly an year ago) I bought the HTC TouchHD that I still have.
Recently though I changed the disappointing iPhone 3GS for an HTC Hero , and I realized that what's important it's not the screen size , but the sensibility of the screen and specially the OS and the UI.
Just try one of these Hero with its new Android and Sense UI,and you'll never want to use anything else, specially not an iPhone.
This from a guy who besides the Hero owns also a Nokia N97 and the mentioned HTC TouchHD, and who in the last year also had a Samsung Omnia (i900) and an iPhone 3GS (not all at the same time)
Until I will be able to try a Nokia N900 and/or an HTC Leo, I have found the only phone I want to use and that's an Hero
ok listen why the hell is that shit in german and why the hell didn't he demo the product? Pass!
when and where can i obtain this. i need an upgrade from my POS Sony Ericsson z750a that has made more than a few high speed encounters with concrete and tile flooring
Those Australian guys who introduced, took preorders for, and then canceled the Kogan Agora said they canceled it because they realized that the QVGA screen would be incompatible with some Android apps.
So I wonder if that was BS or if this thing is going to have issues in the future.
engadget commenters suck
i like the idea of removable face plates, but i hate dropping something like that because it explodes into 5 pieces.
Super slim without face plates. Love it.
Still Touch HD is Good.
what kills me is the amount of rom and ram this thing has compared to my g1, which would be perfect if it had that amount.
g1:
ROM: 256 MB
RAM: 192 MB
tattoo:
512MB/256MB ROM/RAM
