Sony TRIMASTER quad-HD LCD multiplies the resolution, and the price, of any home HDTV
Can't wait until December for Toshiba's CELL REGZA LCD? Sony is bringing its own 56-inch 3,840x2160 quad-HD display to market November 1 in Japan. Priced at 6,825,000 ($76,583) including taxes this is clearly for pros only, hence the TRIMASTER name referring to the three elements combined within -- exact color, accurate picture and reliability -- thanks to a RGB LED backlit panel built with incredible picture reproduction and exact calibration (with included software via a connected PC) in mind. While it's cheaper than JVC's $175k 4K projector, unless you're mastering the next Pixar flick, viewing high res satellite imagery or can't live without four HD feeds on one screen even the most well heeled amongst may be better served scouring bargain bins for a used Westinghouse D56QX1 for now.

I'm so glad we have an another good excuse for Quad-Crossfine or Three-SLI ... Assuming there's a way to hook it up, of course.
Jizz...in my pants. right now. oh god.
Hot damn, I could fake my own death for the insurance money and would still have to take out a loan for that puppy.
get better insurance.
I wonder how many frames per second a Source engine game would run at that resolution on a midgrade machine? Lets say one that can do Left4dead at 100 fps at 1920x1200.
About 20-25, I'd say.
Wow!!
though I think Sony can make better designs :)
Have you seen any of their professional products? This is exactly what the studios want/need/like.
And I'm no exception. I think in a year I'll be buying this one for critical footage reviews and supervision as I don't think we'll have a theatre hall by that time yet, so we'll stick with a monitor instead of a projector. Besides, the computer connected to this beast will won't be that much cheaper than this monitor :D
Can't wait! :)
I would love to see what graphics card can output video to that, in it's native resolution, and with what kind of connection? Multiple HDMIs?
$76k? You can buy a good sized house for that. Who the Christ do they expect to actually pay for this?
You'd need a good purpose, and that's probably not entertainment. I'd figure you're either saving the world, mapping something or making money. If the high resolution helps you do that, then you're looking at buying this screen.
A HOUSE for $76K?! o_O JESUS! It either must be a cardboard house or USA really is the land of miracles as they say! I bought a small house for about $350000 USD and it's actually a group-house. Single ones cost above $500 grand!
Is it allowed to sell a kidney on ebay?
well considering you can buy "ghosts in jars" and air guitars in ebay, i'd say yes!
start cutting!
You forgot to add the price of the extended warranty, and yes; this time it's worth it.
from what I can tell in the translated link, it's not HDMI 1.4 , which sucks. HDMI 1.4 with a 4k display and a high performance PC would be butter (if only I could afford it sigh)
Sony's going to need to take another look at that list price to compete with Toshiba and Mitsubishi, who have the same monitor available for much less.
I wish I were a master too... :(
Splitscreen Goldeneye
I just spat beer over my keyboard.... You win. Seriously.
This display is designed to act as a reference monitor for people working in the PRO A/V field. Screw HDMI; that's for consumers. Its primary use will be for displaying 3G-SDI. It has awesome 12-bit scaling and quad capability, which makes it an excellent deal for those poor souls holed up in a Video Village or a broadcast booth.

$10k cheaper than MSRP!!
Still waaaaaaaay outta reach! :(
I read the Name of the product as Sony Trimester haha
Used for high resolution ultrasound imagery
I think I'd rather just buy 4 top-of-the-line 1080p panels and put them together....with enough left over to pay off my student loans
Yeah, I'm thinking this display has just over twice the pixels of a 2560x1600 display (2.025x to be exact), and you could get two of the best of those for a small fraction of the price you pay for one of these...
Finally I'm going to be able to play my 8-bit Nintendo like it was always meant to be!!! :)
WOuldn't it be cheaper to buy 4 tv's? although this is rediculously awesome
engadgets readers are once again mostly clueless.
"i would rather buy 4 monitors"
"76k is too much"
you guys seem to think sony, toshiba etc make only consumer gear.
hell, sony has a 4k projector already, along with jvc...there are already 4k video cameras on the market, and films being shot and di'd in 4k....big money players. a few of these kinds of screens in the dailys / edit suits is nothing compared to the overall cost.
thats not even getting into fields that ARENT movies...
tsk. remember kids, read the article.
typical engadget reader - look at headline, picture, price....comment on crazy price.
i think you misplaced the comma in the US price, didn't you?
QFHD? I say that means quite f**king high definition.
is this almost UHDTV ???? =O
