MOTOBLUR ported to the G1, unreleased CLIQ looks on in envy
It's unclear exactly how MOTOBLUR software might've leaked into the wild, but it's already been repurposed in the best sort of way into a G1-friendly ROM. Despite its beta status it's looking relatively snappy, but there are still some missing elements like WiFi and Bluetooth. If anything it's a testament to how portable and hackable Android is turning out to be so far, and we look forward to the ongoing improvements to Android by diverse manufacturers being disseminated far and wide -- though if Motorola had its way, it'd probably at least happen after the relevant device has hit the market. Video is after the break.

"purportedly ported" ???
I want it
I'll stick with Cyanogen.. I don't see anything that appealing to be honest.
Truth, and 4.1.999 is awesome. Can't wait for 4.1.9999
CyanogenMod is a great stable ROM. But it's boring compared to MOTOBLUR and HTC SenseUI. I always have the latest CM ROM on my sdcard in case I need it, but I don't usually use it.
The universal messaging is a killer feature. I hear ya on Cyanogen's stuff, by Drizzy Drake's stuff is fantastic too. This and the pulse both are great, though this one is probably the best new phone OS out.
How did they get ahold of MOTOBLUR in the first place? I never get any leaked mobile ROMs
Maybe this kind of thing will get the manufacturers and carriers to stop dragging their feet about releasing these devices...especially here in the US.
I've been running the Cliq ROM and it's great. Not 100% stable, but stable enough for daily use.
It's nicer than HTC SenseUI imo.
yeah... I tried it but it was a bit sluggish ... Ill attempt to run it again when they optimize it and have for the most part, a fully functional kernel. The Hero sofware is still the best thing out ATM IMO (especially now that it is as fast as the regular G1 software.
I think currently no bluetooth, no wifi, and other things not working on it as of yet
Hmm I wonder how it copes with the missing sensors... the Cliq has proximity and ambient light sensors that the G1 doesn't have. I'm guessing the Cliq just doesn't use them that often?
In android framework, the service will try to get a stub of the underlying sensor output via JNI bridge.
If the hardware does not have the sensors presented, the service will just return an empty stub that does nothing.
@Hong: Ya, I just figured that if various parts of their proprietary software were using said sensors, it'd malfunction like crazy when it's reading 0 from all of them, always.
Of course it's snappy.
The donut 1.6 release appears to be AT LEAST 20% faster wi (I have gps, 3g and wifi on with roadsync's active exchange and it lasts > 12hours now when it used to die around 8hrs to boot!). 1.6 shows snappier menus, app launches, googlemaps, etc... And that's just a s/w upgrade on a 1yr old processor.
take that 3G S.... An android phone with a 700+Mhz cpu gonna be silly blazing fast with 1.6 and 2.0...
8 hours just to boot? That's too long for me. Anything over 0 hours (rounded) is a long boot time.
This guy is saying the interface is so cool. I heard that people were reporting that the Cliq interface sucked big time and nobody would buy one because the interface was so difficult to use. So what's the difference?
I used it on my HTC Vogue (almost 3 years old) and I liked the system. It's definitely not hard to use, it just has a whole different set of apps and widgets that are cute and furry looking, unlike HTC Sense UI which looks like something out of the matrix.
damn you economy for making me get rid of my G1 :(
actually.. damn you Tmo and your MUST HAVE data plans :(
Damn you both!!! hahaha
ru crazy for G1 you don need a data plan am using $39 plan for voice , no message and no data.
Cease and desist letters from Nokia and Google in 3... 2... 1...
Damn, I mean Motorola... Never mind.
I think the G1 is the most versatile phone I've ever owned.
It's on the G1?! NOOOOOOOO
I was 298 minutes away from cake. I hate you >=T.
Cyanogen + Enochx, thanks.
WTF is up with compass set up? lmao. that was so funny when he showed
I have a pre,g1 & 3gs all linked to my google voice.
I mostly use the pre as my prefered phone. but i just tried this rom out on my g1 and holy shit it is fast and stable.
The pre really need to improve synergy.
The iphone is a turd per app phone nothing interesting on it. Have it because got into a ATT contract and got it for free.
But android overall is exciting. Glad i have both platforms to play with.
BLur & pulse both ported..

Uhh, Engadget, could you keep this under your hat? We don't need any more C & D orders, we like the different flavors of roms for our G1's. Moto, Engadget is just kidding...lol.
