Screen Grabs: Nokia N96 preserves the evidence on Dexter
Screen Grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today's movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dt com.

No this isn't the first Nokia-wielding fictional character or celeb that we've seen in this space, but the N96 recently spotted in the hands of our favorite psychopath has us wondering: would Dexter Morgan try N-Gage? And wouldn't he prefer something with a QWERTY keyboard? Come to think of it, we always thought of him as a BlackBerry guy. Then again, times are tough, and as a new father he has to make... sacrifices.
Update: We originally identified this one as the N81. Thanks to all you raving Nokia fanatics who pointed out the error.

old junk phone .. i guess the guys of Nokia really run out of money and didn't wanna loose a n900...
I don't know, I always pictured Dexter as a Nokia 1100 type of guy
I am surprised engadget is aware of Nokia's model numbers!!!
low ranked??
two question marks ??
Isn't that the nokia N96?
Yeah.
PHONE IDENTIFICATION FAIL
yeah this is a N96,.
the N81 has a boxed out surface.
These two phones look identical to each other so they get mixed up

its capable of multi-tasking. so its definitely a smartphone. while its not the best of nokia's phones, there's definitely no "sacrificing" to anything by going with this fully featured smartphone.
It seems that engadget are not "raving Nokia fanatics" themselves I guess...
"Thanks to all you raving lunatics who pointed out the error."
Fixed it.
The N81's OK but not spectacular. It is a smartphone by the way.
Although this actually is an N96.
looks like a N96 to me frankly, i have one myself, looks too wide for a n81 .....
It's the Nokia N96, not the N81.
Meh. Dexter isn't huge on showing off gadgets.
In regards to this episode, it was AWESOME. Totally an unexpected cliffhanger and I can't wait until this Sunday's episode!
True that. For last few seasons, they've used Boost phones. Deb (in the show) seems to be using an E75 as of late. Damned cliffhanger...
You said it, one of the best episodes to date!
The acting at the end was really bad though, "Oh I just got shot, didn't realize"
to a serial killer, a knife and bone saw are gadgets
that's a nokia n96. i should know, i have one.
Quite a WTF ending.
As everybody else said: that's an N96.
Dexter FTW!
Here's a pic for Engadget. The difference between the 81 and the 96 is the size of the d-pad and the buttons around it. The 81's is bigger.

The N96 and N95 kind of lost steam with all the latest Android and iPhone/BB upgrades. Symbian is a nice operating system, but all the Nokia's are starting to look the same in that series. Plus in the US, it's sold unlocked which prohibits the price.
iPhone sucks :(
N96!!!!!!!!!!!!
Always found it a little troubling that the whole department uses phones on Boost.
We are "raving Nokia fanatics" - But if you referred to a Macbook Pro as a Macbook and people commented on your mistake, would you call them raving Apple fanatics?
(I do understand that the comment wasn't totally serious, but this is just something to think about)
No, because then they would be offending themselves.
omg, I have a brother!
Just a factiod but the photos were actually on the phone and not what we call a screen burn.
THE best show on tv.
Not to nitpick, but Dexter is a 'Sociopath' not a 'Psychopath'. There's a very significant difference. ;-)
On Mad Men ep. 10, Betty used a 1958 Siemens wall phone. Ok, somebody correct me if I have that wrong. It may have been a Bell.
His sister Debra was using the e75 in the first episode of this season
I wish there was a photo of Dexter sidetalking...
A lot of you from US might have not had a chance to try out nokias, but their N series phones are very modern and powerful running a great OS....I think it N95 was the most powerful phone when it was out...before the Iphone was out.....nokia now kinda lost its game.
I really hate Nokia product placements in TV shows and movies. I'm very aware of their presence since they stand out so blatantly and un-artfully. Product placements should be like how the show Seinfeld placed products into the plot and/or dialogue. Who's gonna turn down a Junior Mint?
Actually, Seinfeld "product placement" was not product placement at all. The creators of the show claim that they just liked how the different brands sounded.
Snapple?
No, too fruity.

Hmmm...
Then I would love to see Nokia be used in the same way.
