Magic Mouse post-teardown loses some of its dark arts charm
Were you expecting unicorn tears or something? iFixit keeps working to finish its list of teardown to-dos, this time with Apple's new Magic Mouse. It probably comes as no surprise, but just under the top surfaces lies a considerable number of capacitive sensors, and other than that, there really isn't a lot to gaze upon. Then again, if you tend to fancy the ins and outs if gears and gizmos, this should be right up your alley.

Where's the magic?
You can't see it? :P
it's in retail stores today! :D
iCan't right-click
iCan't pinch-zoom
iCan't limit scroll length
You can right click if you lift your finger (from what I hear). Although I only own 1 apple product (a mac mini) and am a Windows developer by trade -I'm undeniably labelled a fan boy here... and rightfully so, all I have to say is that this is beautiful!
Much better then the mighty mouse with that stupid ball that clogs in about a month, ruined for life.
But there are no side buttons that I can see. I wonder if you can still assign 5 buttons worth of options for Expose and Spaces (yes Microsoft Fanboys, OSX supports 5 buttons and has for quite sometime..despite fixation on the *idea* that Apple = 1 mouse button).
My Mac Mini works beautifully with my MS natural keyboard and MS 5 button, but my next purchase maybe this guy for a future laptop.
Danny... what?
"iCan't right-click": Yes, you can... you sound like an idiot saying this.
"iCan't pinch-zoom": Can your mouse? Besides, who wants to have to reposition their hand on the mouse every time they want to zoom? Why not use your left hand, already over the CTRL key, to do it? Besides, this is consistent with Mac trackpad behavior.
"iCan't limit scroll length": I'm not entirely sure what you mean here. It takes momentum and such into account, something I don't know that I've seen in another mouse. As far as I can tell, you can scroll one pixel or as many as you want. And you can scroll in 360 degrees, even circular.
Quite funny with the latest commercial from the competition:
Oh, oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh!
It’s magic!
Oh, oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh!
It’s magic!
Look at the sun way up there in the sky!
Shining forever!
The world is so bright!
They all look line iSoapboxS from Apple carved from CATS.
Yes, it's a mouse D:
Yes, it's a mouse D:
I hate engadgets comment system
No ground unicorn horns? :(
@bondsbw :to be forced to use the keyboard instead of a mouse button is so 80's.
Im still remember the first version of Photoshop for PC, it forced you to press shift instead to use the old good right button. Of course, later Photoshop decided to drop the Apple ways and instead used a more standard way to do the things :right button.
Apple is still pushing the way to use a different control only to mark a difference with the rest of the market even when its mean to piss off designer, developer and even csual users and gamers.
Hmm. It was actually Mucrosoft that got sued first for copying the then popular copy cut paste keyboard controls that Apple had first. Windows came out later, and overtook the market just to get sued again for OEM distribution 'threats'.
Disney is keeping it hidden
At first i hated this (not to mention I hated Apple and their products in general) but then something changed in me and I bought a Macbook.
Any who, this is the same deal with this mouse I saw what MS was doing with multi-touch and then i saw this and I loved it I love how Apple does things like this (except for the Macbook Air) and somehow I like it.
But seriously Apple you guys should make a mouse with buttons nothing out outrageously awesome like Razer bout something cool I have a few designs.
i hate your comment.
glad you liked it I worked very hard on it.
Yeah, well I hate both of your comments AND my own. So hah.
@JehxOne
ha. you said "hard on".
That actually has a lot less electronics in it than I anticipated.. It's amazing they managed to squeeze all that down on such a tiny logic board.
I guess it's come to a time where the hardware is good enough and software comes into play.
And yet there is more computing power on that circuit board than they had when we went to the moon.
(yes we went to the moon, losers!)
Study and imitate it all you want folks but that is as close to a perfect mouse you will see until Apple decides otherwise. I bought two, one to use and one to add to my glass showcase. It really is a such an elegant work of art.
you have a glass showcase for computer mouses?
I can vision your glass showcase.. that is epic
What? Try middle-clicking for me please. Oh, what was that? You can't? Too bad.
Look, there's no denying this is a nice looking mouse with some cool technology being utilized but, for all intents and purposes, this is a first gen product. Apple still has some thing it needs to fix in order to get me to even think about switching to their mice. Looks can only get you so far.
@nintendo fanboy hater
"mouses" - er, plural of mouse = mice perhaps?
//grammar/spelling nazi madness over//
good point well made though
@melloncollie :and it is funny, because even my el cheapo 2 button+1 scroll/button $5 mouse can do that.
@Noli
The plural form of the animal is "mice." The plural form of the peripheral is "mouses."
That's a lot of sensors...
I just want to know if it even functions as a normal mouse in Windows. I can't find anyone saying they even tried it yet.
probably not, but i cannot imagine why somebody would think to try
From what I've heard on macs it functions as a one button mouse until everything is installed and working correctly, so I'd assume it does the same for windows.
It works as a normal(-ish) BT mouse.
fool me once, shame on you
fool me twice, shame on me
fool me can't get fooled again
AA batteries seem antiquated in this device.
If it makes you feel better, you can put one of these batteries in instead:
MN1500, MX1500, Type 316, LR6, R6, FR6, HR6, KR157/51, ZR6, 15A, 15D, 15LF, 1.2H2, or 10015.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AA_battery
Marketing rules. After few months i can see Apple will replace this AA battery with something rechargeable like ipod battery (a non-removable). The same thing goes to the wireless keyboard.
I wonder if the Bering Straight bridge would ever have as many trolls as this site. Good god!
Is it still impossible to right click on it?
its from apple, so yes
It wasn't impossible to right click on the mighty mouse, so I'm pretty sure your question, phrased with "still", is pretty much asinine.
ofcourse it can right click - why wouldnt it? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgraF477ieU (around 32 sec in)
there's no middle click though, and i dont think you can asign one through software.
I wish they would just give me a normal mouse which works. Im using a wireless logitech mouse at the moment and i LOVE it. Its nothing fancy, just 2 buttons that work every time i press them, some volume buttons placed in the perfect spot and a scroll WHEEL. Not to mention side buttons which flip me in and out of expose in an instant.
It looks pretty and is all fanciful and such, but Apple...your yet to give us a GOOD mouse since 1998 i think it is. The horrible puck mouse, the featureless one button Pro mouse, and the Mighty mouse with its oversensitive side buttons and clogged up scroll wheel.
Stop trying to give us something "different" and use your innovative ideas in more appropriate areas lol.
ok im calm now :-P
Yeah, I don't know about this one. I guess I'll have to go to the Apple store and see for myself. I hate having to lift one finger just to be able to right click -_-
i actually lift the left finger when i right click without even realizing i do this. But it's a natural movement for me, so i have no complains here.
I'm wondering if you will be able to asign some gestures in 3rd party software like Photoshop or AE, that would be really usefull.
Is this the best you guys can report on the day of the Windows 7 launch? A crappy Apple mouse?
I'd take a multi-button mouse over a one-click pony any day.
Thank you Logitech and uberOptions for letting me whore out the MX Revolution :)
