You know
3D has a long way to go when even Jerry Jones can't manage to sell it for longer than seven minutes: the
vaunted real-time 3D scoreboard display experiment at last night's Cowboys game was turned off to loud cheers after just six minutes and fifty seconds of being active. The problem, as usual, was glasses: most of the 80,000 people in attendance didn't bother to put on the headgear required to see the 3D effect, and instead saw a blurry anaglyph image -- which they then booed. What's more, some who wore the glasses complained that the 3D effect caused nausea, although probably not as badly as the Cowboys' 20-17 loss to the Chargers. HDlogix actually has the tech to do glasses-free 3D, but it simply doesn't work when scaled up for
the world's largest HD monitor -- a problem they'll have plenty of time to solve when the Cowboys fail to make the playoffs with another couple December losses.
fail
@Banksta3
I really don't know why broadcasters and film studios are bothering with all this 3D shit. 2D is good enough.
@realar that is what I would have said about SD a couple of years ago..
@Banksta3
I'd love to see her boobs in 3D
@Rinum009 They are in 3D. Put on your glasses.
@realar 2D isn't just good enough, in my opinion it's better. 3D is just a gimmick that adds nothing of value and just causes distraction. I like to see the occasional 3D film but would prefer most video to remain 2D.
@Banksta3
what i dont understand is...the giant scoreboard is mainly for people at the game, right? and if thats so...arent they already viewing the game in 3D?
@coolpal
Yeah, who knows? In a couple years new "3DTVs" could be common and everyone will be talking about how crappy our current HDTVs are/were.
@Banksta3
"Wow! This is just like playing virtual skeeball!"
@realar Money. No better reason in the universe.
@Frith Just like stereo is better than surround sound right/
/s
I certainly cheered the Cowboys loss... Eagles are now first in the NFC East wooo!
But I digress; this was kind of a dumb experiment. I wouldn't expect those in attendance to want to bother with having to put on the glasses to look at the display, then back off to look at the players, repeat ad nauseum. So until they can scale up the glasses-free tech to that display, really not worth it.
@(Unverified)
Agreed. Stupid way to showcase the technology. I should buy stock now ..
It will take a miracle for the Cowboys to get to the playoffs, they have the hardest December schedule of all time!
@lolwhat it will take more than a miracle, that game killed their spirit. and they are still trying to downplay the fact they don't know how to win in december instead of admitting there is a problem and doing something about it.
@gs6456 The only good thing that the buffalo bills did this decade was to get ride of Wade Phillips. I'm glad the cowboys picked him up :)
@lolwhat
Perhaps they were hoping the 3D would help Paper Mario style.
Sounds like a failed experiment with the lowest common denominator.... Cowboys fans.
@conscious whatever, we love our team no matter what
@gs6456 how many superbowl wins does your team have?
3d broadcast?
you are in the god damn stadium, it already is in 3d!
@BrianH
Right. There's virtual reality, then there's *actual* reality.
@BrianH LOL I was thinking exactly that. I am amused by the effort that is wasted coming up with solutions to non-existent problems like this one. While perfectly good ideas get ignored or laughed at.
Is this by any chance that same place where the video screen was way too low?
Anyway, I wish these 3D promoters will try to move past 1955 and try to produce a system that does not rely on those darn glasses.
This type of set-up is a cop-out.
@LAY It is, actually.
WTF!?! the game was LIVE in 3D!
@yulebellow
From the example image above, you probably could have gotten a better 3D experience if you just used your 20x binoculars.
"HDlogix actually has the tech to do glasses-free HD"
Isn't HD always glasses-free? ;-)
Not if you're near-sighted
@Chefgon Touche.
They should do smaller testing earlier in the week....Or fire the guy that said this was a good idea...Orrr focus on the team and not the damn stadium!
@therodt Given the team, I think they should continue to keep the focus on the stadium.
I think the moral of the story is less R&D into gimmicky 3D - more R&D into affordable, larger, higher definition (more than 1080p) TVs. Like an 80 plus inch laservue from mitsubishi or Kuro goodness plasma but with higher resolution than the last Kuros.
I just got a G10 Panasonic plasma and while the picture is OK, the TV is very small and not nearly as good as even an 8G kuro let alone a 9G Kuro or a Fujitsu.
@boe Or, more R&D into getting a decent team :P
@boe: They are. It's called super hi-vision (yeah i know, lame). The resolution goes up to 7680x4320. If I remember correctly you need at least a 60 inch tv to use it. We won't see this for years, and I mean years. After all, how many years did it take for hi-def to finally get commerical, they've had the tech for it forever. Apparently many many test subjects get very very sick while watching super hi-vision, so be careful what you ask for.
I personally think we need to take a step back and stop for a while. Stop at 1080 that is. Companies are coming up with too many different products and standards that eventually everything is going to turn into one jumbled mess. TV worked in the past because it was simple. Take it home and plug in the cable, boom TV. Now, beyond the geeks, people don't care and are getting turned off by the complexity and fear that what they buy won't be good in a year.
@Jordan
Thanks - I've already seen quad resolution on a few TVs - e.g. the 150" panasonic and a number of prototype TVs at CES last January.
I think it definitely is a must for TV's over 70". Just about any resolution looks good on a tiny 35" TV. I'd love to replace my small (65") tv in my living room and put in a nice big 80" or 85" in the living room. I don't have the funds for a nice house in LA so a projector which would cost $25K for a decent one anyways is out of the question.
I was looking forward to buying a 10G Kuro this year (until they killed off the Kuros) as they were rumored to be releasing a 75" Kuro this year had they gotten the glass in time from Panasonic to keep producing TVs.
The Panasonic Plasmas while being one of the better plasma's on the market aren't even close to the Kuro 8G or 9G or older Fujitsu TVs either. Right now we are putting all this effort into 3D TVs. I don't get it - if 3D movies didn't make it into the 60's at the theater why would we want it on our TVs at home?
Picture quality is far more important to me than 3D gimmicks. Last years' Kuro is way better than the current TVs in terms of picture quality even at standard 1080p. For me I'd rather have absolutely great picture quality and when they get 3D technology to work like haulodeck technology without glasses give me a shout. Even the best 3D technology at Universal and other places I've seen would offer me nothing of interest while watching Chuck, NCIS etc.
"3-DUD"
lol
Another test is needed. Which was it that caused the nausea, the Cowboys or the 3D technology.
Too Tough to call.
>>although probably not as badly as the Cowboys' 17-20 loss to the Chargers.
>> they'll have plenty of time to solve when the Cowboys fail to make the playoffs with another couple December losses.
Haha, that was hilarious!
@DirtyVegas doh!!!
Go Chargers!
@S3RG10
Go where!? :s
Glasses 3D is stupid.
yah.. to all those companies who think 3d is the future. Yes it is the future, BUT NOT WITH GLASSES!
Definitely a gadget blog, not a sports blog. The score was 20-17, not 17-20
@Carson
Well done. I was logging in to say the exact same thing.
How bout those Chargers!!
@JordTheJedi San Diego Super-chargers! Charge!

Ha-Ha! In the article the other day about Nvidia's big push for 3D Blu-ray I caught all kinds of flak for saying that *No One* wants to wear glasses to watch a movie at home for more than a rare gimmick. Everyone tried to claim that I was so wrong... well, let's see now... just how many "average Joe" fans were there who wanted no parts of it? Add to that the not quite sliced-bread popular Blu-Ray format... profit? No.
In a open stadium like that, I'll choose 4K HD over anything 3D when it comes to cheerleaders. Cowboy cheerleaders.
