Engadget for iPhone / iPod touch: available now!
Good news, everyone! Our very own iPhone / iPod touch app is finally really available in Apple's much talked about and critically acclaimed App Store! That's right, all the excitement and info you've come to know and love from Engadget is now bottled in an easy to digest and delicious iPhone form. The application -- easily downloadable from your device or iTunes -- features a whole bunch of useful features such as offline viewing, built in streaming for The Engadget Show, in-app tipping (you know, for when you see the next iPhone), and all kinds of customization options. You can download the app right here, or click on the image above.
Even better than this? We've got more apps on the way! Before CES (fingers crossed), you should see both a BlackBerry and webOS version of the Engadget application, and plans for the Android version are already in motion.
Lastly, a big, big, big thanks to the team at AOL that actually made this thing a reality: Sun Sachs, Andy Averbuch, Hareesh P, Anibal Rosado, Rajesh Kumar, Rich Foster, Claudeland Louis, Mike Wolstat, Eric Wedge, Vikas B R, Milissa Tarquini, Asha Indira and Bob Gurwin. You guys rule.

@danhawk911 Android please? pretty please?
@ANDZT
For real, screw the iPhone. Where's the Android love?
@ANDZT And where's the love for Windows Mobile? Not to mention Symbian...
@danhawk911 I agree also, please make an Android app.
@danhawk911
Latest Engadget Show already said that Android app was in the works, but they didn't have enough developers for simultaneous release (or something to that effect).
@dhomas Come to think of it, I really don't need an app for this. RSS feeds are working just fine for me on my WinMo device. A better mobile browser experience would have been nice, though. Something that would look nice in Opera Mobile (or Safari) using a different portal like mobile.engadget.com.
Not even plans for a WinMo app? That hurts engadget....
@ANDZT I'm sure they'll eventually make something for the Android.
But for now, not many people care. iPhone has the spotlight ;)
Thanks for the App! downloading now..
@dhomas Another vote for Windows Mobile
@Emiliano Just use RSS Reader. Dont really see the need for just another webportal app specific to one website.
LOL, breaking news.
@danhawk911 Just downloaded the iPhone app. Excellent work guys! I have officially deleted my Engadget Safari bookmark icon, well done!
@dhomas
second that...windows mobile please
Wahoo! Posting from the app now. :D
I can't wait for the Maemo version!
Oh wait. It doesn't need an app to view the site properly.
@simbadogg
make that 3 for WinMo. i haven't really been able to use Engadget (well i view EngadgetMobile more) as well since the site update. had used the iPhone site before on my Touch Pro2 but i can't find it now.
@Delta WinMo App for the win... RSS is ok for now, at least.
@MarkAnderson
iPhone doesn't need an app to view the site properly. It has the browser that set the bar for other browsers to beat. It renders it perfectly and is fast. But, this app is a lot faster than a web page on safari, the browser on your n900, or any of the other slow piecers on windows mobile.
@dhomas mate, there's already •http://m.engadget.com
•http://I.engadget.com
@justinisyoung they said its already in the works. read better.
+1 for WinMo please.
@ANDZT Android ASAP!
What about a DOS or Windows 3.1 version!?
Some of you lot need to chill out... You've survived just fine till now.....
Using the app now. Thank goodness you can reply to comments!
Great job, Engadget!
@MarkAnderson The full version of engadget.con renders just fine on my iPhone. It's nice to have an app that will display the stories faster though
@ANDZT Awww. Poor little android phones don't get iPhone apps. I'm sure the guys at engadget will port it over once android stops sucking.
@harkinat0r +1 On the Safari shortcut icon flush. Nice work, guys!
@stuffnsuch
Including the embedded videos?
Wait a sec... Apple approved it?
@MarkAnderson Nope, the app doesn't show the video either so I'm not bothered by it. I wouldn't mind a n900 but it doesn't have the 850 band for 3G
@MarkAnderson
Um, neither does the iPhone. The app is to make the site more accessible on a small screen.
This is so much better then using safari
About Time
lol
@Hovesko
Why? Why do I need an app to browse a webpage?
@Hovesko
Agree, and congrats Engadget!
Firstly congrats!
But there is an immediate concern I've noticed. The bookmarked version on my iPhone has BIG pictures with FULL names of the articles, the new app doesn't. I can see the logic behind the compressed layout (speed at which you can view everything) but if either the image or the name is visually hindered by the compressed space, it defeats that initial purpose.
I do however like the scrolling top stories, and some other functions.
So if you can address that first part, you'll have a great app!
Have you actually used the mobile site? Go on, ill be here waiting when you come back...
@drumwiz86
I'd have to agree.
Is this a lot better than i.engadget.com?
@Hovesko
Better yet, will this app stop the full version of Engadget from crashing on my iPod Touch 64 gig? I thought the processor was supposed to be able to handle EVERYTHING! Evidently, everything except Engadget.
@drumwiz86 The app can actually load the videos too, which is really nice. Something that you can't do with Safari due to the lack of flash :)
@Mike10010100 I've noticed that if I disable the Adblock jailbroken app that it doesnt crash anymore. Dunno if you have that on or not, but it's saved me some headache. Too bad I paid for the app.
@flux
Nope. Just ordinary, non-jailbroken iPod Touch.
Another thing, this new app doesn't allow for automatic censure of buried comments like the normal website does. And it doesn't allow us to see any rankings whatsoever. And no avatars.
Fix those things, I'll be as happy as a clam.
@Hovesko
But not quite as expected. The replies won't come out as replies once published. This is one of the original messages I've posted as a reply to you:
"I'm writing from my iPod. Where's the landscape mode? (at least in the keyboard) afterall you should know by now that we geeks hate virtual keyboards, specially is they are so friggin small"
There is another annoying thing about it. I'll stick to the RSS reader I guess.
Only thing that's missing from the app is viewable avatars.
It makes my day whenever I see a post by Eric Schmidt or Steve Jobs. lol.
@drumwiz86
"a whole bunch of useful features such as offline viewing, built in streaming for The Engadget Show, in-app tipping (you know, for when you see the next iPhone), and all kinds of customization options."
Via copy&paste on iPhone
Sent from my iPhone
@drumwiz86 Because this app is way faster than loading it up in safari.
Heres to hoping for the WebOS version!
@kandekilla "So to everyone asking -- BlackBerry and webOS apps coming next, then Android. And soon" --josh's twitter account
Will there be any love for us Windows Mobile users? I just got my iPaq 211 and am loving it...
@kandekilla i'm also hoping someone will be gracious enough to make a port for symbian too.
