that's cool, wish i had that storage bump
@cswright also the center ball button is gone - good cause it was never needed what with the gestures
@cswright and the Touchstone battery cover for Pre is included inbox ! nice
SWEET! Upgrade time!
@cswright
But I like the blinking LED button when I get messages though :), but yeah - with the gestures I never use the button.
@cswright FACEPALM... i truly hope that Palm has A LOT more to say then what is on this spec sheet or 2010 truly will be the beginning of the end
@PalmIsGarbage yayyyyy you made it! it just wasnt a party without you
@Jon Rubinstein your party my good man
@Jon Rubinstein you're the geek of the year not the party animal of the year lol
@cswright
No microSD, no dice
@cswright
Ah, WiFi on the pixi is just what I've been waiting for!
Does anyone know if Palm's wifi is crippled like Blackberry's - where you can't use WiFi on most Apps?
@DangerRabbit ???? it works fine. although I wouldn't be surprised if Verizon finds a reason to ruin it
@JoeBlow Both new Verizon handsets will arrive on the market on January 25th; however neither Palm nor the carrier have announced pricing or not. They’ve also not revealed what extra fees there might be for tethering functionality. More of the specs and details: http://bit.ly/palm-pre-plus-pixi-plus-details
Yes the specs is what you called just 'the palm joe specs' although I think the 16GB is kind of moot in my opinion.
It's nice to see Palm and WebOS getting a decent shot, with it going to AT&T and now Verizon.
@westell220 this is Palm taking a "decent shot" at shooting themselves in the foot!
they need to seriously wow people this week. minor spec bumps to underwhelming old products is not going to save their company
@PalmIsGarbage First, I don't think this is all they have to show.
Second, the Pre with better build quality would be awesome. Its still a great phone, with current specs. I'd say that a Pre with an increase in build quality would be a pretty big win.
For me, anyways.
@PalmIsGarbage
did palm rape your mother after shooting your father? for fucks sake stop trolling.
that... is a crap update.
@PhoenixFox
truth i thought there would be more oh wells still love my pre
can't wait to see what's i n store for tomorrow
@PhoenixFox you are correct sir... if this is all that palm can pull off at CES... all the hubbub and buildup were bogus as I predicted
hopefully palm has more to say for itself than this
Verizon getting Pre too? they seem to get all the good phone except the Iphone.
@techlord I thought you said all the good phones, then you mentioned the iPhone.
@MarkCohen
Cmon dude
@MarkCohen since everyone is following the iPhone's lead it had to be mentioned
@HighestRanked in what respect is everyone following the iPhone? it wasnt the first smartphone in a lot of areas
@cswright
Even though some may not like the iPhone you can not disagree that it has affected the way we use cell phones very much. The spur of the iPhone accelerated the use of touchscreens on many mobile phones. And although, it was not the first touchscreen smartphone, it was ,in my opinon, the first extremely successful smartphone.
@cswright in respect to mobile operating system technological advancements. As is now, iPhone OS has the most sophisticated APIs, application frameworks and core/media OS services.
@Dustin id agree with you, it has changed the smartphone market tremendously and continues to be very successful. I also think RIM/Blackberry can state the same. HighestRanked has cleared up what he meant, which is fine
@HighestRanked I love how "highestranked" is a total apple fanboy in disguise. All who hate highestrank downrank him :D lol
There's still no video recording? C'mon, man!
They took away the physical BALL too! Hopefully better build quality now.
@IcerC it isnt really a ball, it was just a click button that was redundant to the superior gesturing in WebOS
What's that bottom item that starts with capacitive? Is that the Touchstone? It looks like it's included with the Pre? Do I like question marks?
The 16gb bump seems decent although if they can't fix the iTunes syncing more often it's somewhat moot (although the way my Pre finds music I just dump into the root filesystem is nice).
If they can fix the biggest Pre issues that I've griped about in the past I'd consider moving to Verizon. I like Sprint's network and coverage but their tech support is so abysmally bad (even now after all the improvements) that I can't deal with them much longer. A friend's Pre needed to be reset on Sprint's end and even with my girlfriend being an ex-Sprint employee the techs wouldn't listen to her and it was a 2 hour ordeal. They treat their employees like crap, too. I know that the big V sucks (I was with them for years before Sprint) but it's just choosing the lesser of two evils.
@JerkyChew It's the Touchstone-compatible battery cover, which probably should have been included from day one. Another "plus."
I think its good that Palm is opening up, but I think both devices leave something to be desired in terms of hardware specs considering what is out there.
kinda disappointed by this. i was hoping for a new hardware announcement tomorrow, but with this "update," they'd be shooting themselves in the foot. "in six months we'll be unveiling this..., but you can have last year's tech on at&t or vzw in just one month!"
Hopefully with the Pre making its way onto the two biggest networks in the United States will finally create some incentive for developers to... well, develop. It's embarrassing that WebOS still doesn't even have a dedicated multi-client IM application yet (unless I missed it when looking around for one.)
Also, no video? Wtf.
@Leindurstit what IM clients are you using? Palm's messaging application takes care of everything ive ever used and then some
@Leindurstit Um...isn't an IM client built in? I mean, I know it handles AIM and GChat, I bet it handles MSN/Windows Live and Yahoo. That's the big four...it handles IM SPECTACULARLY too. I love it.
@cswright It should support a lot of things, it uses libpurple, the same backend that Pidgin and Adium use.
not a big deal, i was expecting severe buyers' remorse on my Sprint Pre
Nice to see Verizon is getting a buttonless Pre and wifi Pixi. Palm: Make sure your new hardware comes to Sprint first. I didn't leave the big V for nothing.
The Pre is junk . I owned one for two weeks before returning it. The build quality leaves a lot to be desired and the lack of any real physical navigation and pickup/hangup buttons leave my Centro with an edge over both these phones.
I wanted to love the Pre. The OS is beautiful. But the actual hardware is junk. Feels like a toy. Palm should have really considered building a whole new model and adding an SDXC slot to it.
@roxics I agree the build quality could be better, but I really believe the OS makes up for it. I'm happy to be a little more careful with the hardware in order to use WebOS.
Also, the thing has more physical keys than a lot of top-tier smartphone including iPhone and NexusOne.
@roxics would you take WebOS inside the body of the Nexus One?
@HighestRanked
I don't know much about the Nexus One. But if it's anything like the Sprint Hero then year I would. The Hero has incredible build quality, a great little scroll ball, physical buttons, a nice soft touch coating to it and multitouch screen. It's a beautiful phone.
WebOS would be great on it.
@MrAkash
I am not getting this. Since when does the amount of physical keys a phone has correlate with its being designated "top tier"? As far as I see it, removing buttons does nothing positive except POSSIBLY improving aesthetics.
@roxics I don't know why you got your comment hidden, it's nothing but truthful. Since I'm 17 I couldn't switch to get an iPhone so I was stuck with my family's sprint plan, which I thought would be okay with the Pre coming out, saved up. Bought it nearly full price only to be sorely disappointed on a ton of levels, shit vibrate, no LED notifications(at the time, I THINK there's some now), and poor battery life, all of that on top of a shoddy build quality. I'm not on the hero, and with a new rom it runs lightning fast but the app market still leaves something to be desired.
is there an upgrade there?....
oh, there is a wifi... haha
Wow! What an amazing update! Simply amazing!
