HP's Envy lineup was introduced
way back in the dark ages of
last decade, so it's clearly due for a significant update. In all seriousness, the refresh that popped up today for both rigs probably has a lot more to do with Intel's
Arrandale unveiling than anything else, but whatever the case, we'll take it. The Envy 15 now starts at just $1,299.99 (down from $1,699.99), and it includes Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit), a 2.4GHz Core i5-520M processor, 4GB of DDR3 memory and a downright delicious 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5830. The 13-incher has seen its base price lowered by $300 to just $1,499.99, with specs now including a 1.6GHz Core 2 Duo SL9300, an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330 (512MB) and a 4-cell battery. Both models can be customized right now, but you should probably wait 'til
CES concludes before making any rash decisions about the here and now.
[Thanks,
Sean]
OH WOW.. IT LOOKS UNLIKE ANY COMPUTER I'VE EVER SEEN BEFORE!!
@trunkafunk LIAR! It looks exactly like the old Envy!
@trunkafunk
LMAO...Im loving the sarcasm
@pina
I think he meant it looks like a macbook pro -.-
@CJisohsocool I know exactly what he meant. It seems sarcasm doesn't do to well in text unless you "/sarcasm" -.-
@CJisohsocool
It looks like a macbook pro, it has the price tag, now if only it felt like one.
@Jean looks good… better than my Macbook Pro 13″ running Windows 7 like a dream and that also comes with an optical drive: http://bit.ly/hp-envy-is-worth-it
@trunkafunk lol up rank.
i'd rather save the extra 300$ and but a alienware 12' laptop :3
@trunkafunk
Well, its called th Envy becuase, HP's designers are ENVIOUS of Jonny Ive.
I went on Wikipedia to find the 7 (apparently 8) Deadly Sins...
luxuria (extravagance)
gula (gluttony)
avaritia (avarice/greed)
acedia (acedia/discouragement)
ira (wrath)
invidia (envy)
superbia (pride)
Ok, I'll say this, HP is neither Proud nor Fat, but other than that, this Lappy is going to burn in hell :P
@Jean It may look like the Macbook to you, but that's where the similarities end. Try equipping your Macbook with a Quad Core i7, 1920x1080 resolution, and Bluray. Strike 1,2 and 3. I didnt even see an option for a 1GB graphics card. BTW, the envy was about $300 cheaper.
OH WOW.. IT LOOKS UNLIKE ANY COMPUTER I'VE EVER SEEN BEFORE!!
@trunkafunk
It has just been experimentally determined that double posting will downrank you.
Why is the 13inch $1499 and the 15inch is $1299? This is sabotage to the 13inch because people will think for $200 less they get a better screen real estate, better graphics, and better processor. Please explain that to me someone.
@Techeternity - yeah, I don't get that either...
Anyway, at $1299 the Envy 15 isn't such a bad choice imho, especially *if* the Arrandale processor takes less energy/runs cooler...
@NewL Exactly, this is, in my opinion, the best alternative to a 15inch macbook pro. The only thing you won't get is a cd drive, but thats it.
@Techeternity
so before, you paid for the premium parts. hp hasnt really lowered the cost of the computer, just made it a lot shittier. inside you get that i5 instead of i7 by default. a low resolution screen instead of the 1900x1080. and 2gb less ram.
wow what a saving.
@(Unverified) But you do get a better gpu standard so that has to count for something no? Plus, you can always pay a little more to get the higher res.
@Patlex
its true. they also have a phrase on the page "This model is upgradable and expandable so you can change it as technology improves or your needs change". which is interesting. I wonder what all that entails.
glad I waited to get one
I don't understand why laptops with smaller screens are usually more expensive then ones with bigger screens
@Haus
In this case the screen on the envy 13 is superior to that of the envy 15, and I suspect that is where the bulk of the cost differential is. the 13" has the rgbled display with 400 nits of brightness. That is incredibly bright for a laptop screen. Checking the models side by side, the 13s screen stands out. Still, the 15 is a fantastic value, far more power, it's just ridiculously good hardware for the price.
"just $1,499.99, with specs now including a 1.6GHz Core 2 Duo SL9300, an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330 (512MB) and a 4-cell battery"
I don't get this. $1500 for a $450 netbook?
@(Unverified) - so hilarious. You should be a comedian! No, really!
/s
@(Unverified) Yeah, a Core2Duo is exactly like an Atom
Or not.
@(Unverified) And an HD4330 is equivalent to integrated graphics!
Correction: The Envy 15 was originally $1799.99 and Envy 13 was originally $1699.99.
I'm so confused, are the prices a typo?
why is the 13 inch more..when it has worse specs? macs are known for being overpriced but they dont even pull that bullshit.
@engadget123 better screen.
Couldn't agree more. For the price they are asking this thing should be better spec'd than the 15. Alas.
@Cam why would they put the better screen on the smaller laptop?
It must be sad to have to copy other laptops. Does HP have product designers?
Hilarious, somehow all these knockoff OEMs think that by pricing their crap HIGHER than Apple, somehow people won't think of it as knockoff junk.
THE WHOLE POINT OF BUYING KNOCKOFFS IS FOR THE CHEAPNESS, MORANS
@mullingitover Morans.... hahaha... You moron.
@mullingitover Or maybe it's at a higher price point because it has better parts ? DURRRRR
and i wonder if this 'price drop' is because it no longer comes with a external cd drive, and bigger battery. anyone know?
Really HP? 'Envy'... your marketing Guru's didn't see that one as a problem?
And I hope ppl still dont buy them! so they go cheapper and then ill buy it... lol
I feel kindda cheated tho.. I got my HP Verve for almost 1k and is nothing close to this guyz =(
soooo unfair!!! lol
i love how the 15 is a real laptop and the 13 has ULV components...i want the guts of the 15 in the 13, and the price of it as well
Why don't they add a solid state drive to these laptops? IMO that's why the mbp is the best laptop so far.
@mixer911 You can get an SSD in them.
@Canizorro wow. That's an extremely good laptop then!
I hope Apple take a cue from HP and put Core i5 and Mobility Radeon 58xx in the new MBPs.
Nice update / price drop though, the Envy 15 is a great alternative if you don't need/want OS X.
@Bruf
Last I heard Apple wasn't going to use the Arrandale chips unless Intel manufactures one without the IGP parts.
If that's true then Apple users will be stuck with C2D chips for a while until AMD comes out with a better alternative.
Or maybe Apple sells enough MBPs to get Intel to blink. I doubt it.
Envy 15 sounds like the perfect laptop for someone with serious cash, even though I'd prefer a widescreen 16" screen... but it's gorgeous and that video card is CLASS A.
@TareG
From what I can tell, the Envy 15 does boast a 15.6" screen with 16:9 widescreen. The available resolutions for the laptop are 1366x768 and 1920x1080.
Also from what I know, all "16" inch screens are 15.6 inches.
@TareG: The 15" is a steal of a deal, even configuring the base to Core i7 and the better screen resolution, though I would probably just stick with Core i5. If only I had the money!
apple knockoff that is a worse value than an actual mac
wtf
Hmm... I'm returning the ASUS N61VN-A1 I just got a week or so ago and will probably get the Envy 15. The prices were just too high before, but now they're a bit more manageable.
Why am I returning the Asus? The screen res is ridiculously low and the screen itself is crap. The colors are extremely washed out, and it's clarity isn't the best - also far too shiny (not sure the Envy will be any less shiny, but I can live with it - I have an Aluminum MacBook afterall).
Dammit Hp. Include a dual core i7 (620lm or 640lm) and i'm sold. It uses 10w less than the i5's.
