Palm Pre Plus shows off multitasking upgrade with 50 simultaneous apps (video)
Yea, you read that right -- fifty apps loaded side by side by freaking side on the Pre Plus, and the thing just kept on ticking. The chaps over at Pre Central decided to test out specifically how much of an improvement the doubling of RAM and storage in the new handset delivered, and they were not disappointed. Opening up the same apps on both phones, they found the original Sprint Pre (sporting a mere 256MB of RAM) ran out of puff at the 13 app mark, whereas the Pre Plus soldiered on until a nice round fifty was reached. Go past the break to see the video evidence for yourself -- long live multitasking!

@6746ea09
this twilight obsession has got to stop
@nicholasphan
twilight=gay, watch a real vampire movie.
@JedixJarf
the comment i was replying to disappeared =( and now it shows my comment as replying to another one.
PALMdoes.
@HardToBelieve Yeah well who needs 50 apps open at one time? Who cares! STUPID PALM! - Sprint Pre owner
@DizWhiz
I'ts better to know that you got options, no?
@DizWhiz @DizWhiz yeah, well who needs a bloated app store where all the good apps are impossible to find under the weight of the tens of thousands of useless apps...
ti each there own.
@tmarks11
You make it sound like there's a giant list of all apps on the store which has to be sifted through. Consumers search for what they want, are shown multiple options for just about everything, and can then choose the one that they like best. In fact, I'd say that it is quite similar to how things are sold in a modern-day supermarket, a demonstration of capitalism at its finest. *Tips hat*
@HardToBelieve
Amen. I'm jealous of the RAM though, I have the Sprint Pre. :-(
@DizWhiz One opens 50 apps because opening apps is cool.
That and there is no other apparent differentiator between the Pre and Pre Plus and Palm's marketing folks had to come up with SOMETHING.
@DizWhiz
You've missed the point. it being able to go up to fifty, doesn't mean you'll have 50 apps open, but you could. And that, is a beautiful thing.
i sense butthurt
It seems opening apps is the only thing the pre is good at. The funny thing is - you can only be on one app at a time.
@HardToBelieve What about battery life?
@Xega
Seriously, did you even do any research, your cards are live you jack ass.
@RottingOrange
Same here. Still love my Pre though.
@Xega
You're right. You can only multitask as much as your brain allows you to. So yeah, for you, you can only be on one app at a time.
@HardToBelieve
It's slick that so many apps can run simultaneously, but in reality no one needs to launch 50 apps. Not even 13. It probably just slows everything down to the speed of molasses.
@Average White Boy
It isn't so much that you can have 50 things open, but that you can have several massive apps open at the same time. The guys at precentral were able to get 2 3D games open on top of 10 other cards on the Pre Plus. It illustrates the the concept that multitasking at high levels is completely possible.
@Mmmm Donuts - No, the App Store really is a train wreck. Much worse than a supermarket. It's so painful finding anything that I no longer try. The only way I get a new app is by recommendation from an outside source. Then I go to the app store, get it, and leave.
@appsman
I have to agree. I've used Apple's (as well as Cydia), RIM's, Android's, and WinMo's, and they all suck when it comes to finding new and interesting applications. I'm sure gems are out there, but finding them is the problem.
The main reason the iPhone left a bad taste in my mouth is because it lacks the ability to install applications from the web (that's also the reason I keep going back to WinMo).
Don't take this as me bashing, because I'm not. Each phone and OS has things it does extremely well, but overall, I much prefer WinMo.
@HardToBelieve
This is a major milestone in mobile computing. The Palm Pre Plus, the first mobile device to run 50 applications simultaneously. This is called multitasking with a big “M”. This achievement should be entered into the “Guinness Book of World Records”. I expect a new Palm Pre Plus Ad from Verizon by Monday.
Cool,
So, you can now run all fifty of the apps available for the Palm Pre at the same time?
I just hope Apple saw this.
@Average White Boy The part that amazed me is that at the end, he goes back to playing Need for Speed and it started playing without a hitch!
@HardToBelieve Also, the new features of Palm WebOS 1.4, which will be pushed out over the air some time in February. Some sweet flash 10.1 plug-in. They’ve also not revealed what extra fees there might be for tethering functionality. More of the specs and details: http://bit.ly/palm-pre-plus-pixi-plus-details
Wow, ram does a smart phone good ~
@cosmicinglewood He skipped pass Engadget's app like it didn't matter
@Jon Rubinstein Or Nokia, for that matter. *ahem N97 *ahem*
@Jon Rubinstein Are you really Jon R.?
@cosmicinglewood
It does what "iDon't" x50....
@cosmicinglewood I've never understood why Phone makers don't just spend the extra $8 and put a whole mess of ram into these things all the time...
@TMoney2007 Because of the added costs for handset most are already subsidizing to the hilt.
@TMoney2007 Hmm, it's probably because if you order, say, 100,000 of these phones to be made, $8 x 100,000 = $800,000. Plus tax.
@Bill Gates Woz, is that you?
@TMoney2007
More RAM = More battery burn. I want more RAM, but know there IS a trade off.
@LurkerX
it's only "battery burn" if you actually are running 50 apps all the time like that guy
@TMoney2007
That $8 manufacturing cost might translate to $20 retail. So suddenly that $99 phone looks really expensive at $119.
We've got the middle of the road phone and the cheap phones we now need a pro palm phone.
@kris120890
I want a WVGA device running webOS yesterday.
@kris120890 hell yeah. all screen wvga palm pro with sdslot and FREE gps. Ability to run android apps using webos gui.
Palm would skyrocket
@kris120890
If they make a new palm phone. I think it should have WiMax, a different form factor (flip phone or horizontal slider), be marketed to girls (they sell much better that way), and sold in Japan (so I can buy it).
Looks like a worthy spec bump to me.
@ChazClout
So this is why Verizon/Sprint owners can't talk and surf the web at the same time. They would be far too busy doing other productive things :D. I would not be surprised if you could run your entire office from there...
I like Windows Mobile btw... Just thought I'll throw it in there. You never know the kind of things you get accused of nowadays...
@Xn1nja No that would be a CDMA limitation.
@Xn1nja I actually do use my pre to run my company. I can be anywhere doing anything and can handle anything I need to (thanks to some custom apps I wrote for myself).
@ChazClout
anybody else kiiinda wanna throw their pre out the window?
haha nice little bump but I like the led button notification tweak dunno if id trade it in for the plus
@ChazClout
Its like lady gaga. Has so much shit on it, its not even funny.
Difference is the pre has sexy shit
@jonyah
Lol that was a joke :)
I been a spectator @ Engadget for so long. Im quite sure we both know how this things work lol. After all... I dont see the need to talk and surf unless you got Bluetooth headset and you're tethering.... Perhaps getting that email may come as an excuse.
@ChazClout
You're not far away from paradise. We welcome you and your logo too :)
