ASUS DR-950 touchscreen e-reader spotted in the 'wilds' of ASUS UK's office
Sure, we'd love to be hanging out with this device in person, but we suppose this is second best. ASUS UK has some shots of the upcoming DR-950 e-reader, sporting 9-inches of grayscale SiPix e-paper. It admittedly looks pretty great under these idealized lighting conditions, and the homescreen interface looks simple and oh-so-touchable. Hopefully we get to put the device through its text-to-speech, 3G and ePub paces soon enough.

I like the design.
@Dahis yeah, i like it too, not flashy or anything and nice smooth edges. i just wonder id theres some sort of compatibility with iphone/ apple ecosystem which i would love!
@unwynd "if"
@Dahis The UI looks pretty sweet
Looks slick, loving the black matte finish.
It's amazing. An eBook Reader that doesn't look like absolute ugly garbage. Even the Sony Readers aren't as nice looking as that device.
that.... looks nice...
Well.. I like the size.
I'd love to see one in person.
The apparent contrast doesn't seem that great to me.
I don't think I would enjoy reading a book printed on grayish paper like that so I am wondering how much I will really like a device like this.
nice air bubble, loser!
like it, want it.
hmmmm......
I wonder what the "donation book" link on the home screen is about.
Asus please make a windows 7 tablet, please...
@One Love That would be sweet. I can't wait until the performance of the low-voltage chips and the power capacity of battery tech hit a level where tablet PC really come into their own.
If Windows 7 runs too low and gimp, no one will want it. And although I love how handy smartphones are (checking email, websites, simple games, fun apps, etc...) it is no replacement for a full OS for productivity.
For instance, although I know it won't match my workstation, I want to be able to run the Adobe suite. As a producer/project manager, there are times I need to open illustrator, photoshop, flash, and after effects. It isn't as though I expect a tablet to run After Effects worth a crap, but at least I can go into a project and look at the comp real quick to help an artist or client when I am out on sales calls.
I am actually hoping the HP TM2 gets good reviews.
@One Love
I've got the Asus 1420P tablet. It came with Windows 7 and runs great!
@sonnyz
I meant acer, sorry. duh, ignore me
@Anatidae
What if it was a skinned XP. Sort of like what we saw in the courier.
(Completely skin XP...you can do that right?)
Has to have an ipod next to it
@weeman that is comparison to the iSlate mini..
9" tablets are great. 7" is nice for things that came in novel form, where layout isn't a big deal or the layout was optimized for reader, but when it comes down to crunching pdfs and technical documents a 9" screen is a lifesaver.
Giant palm pilot ftw!!!
Don't care for 3G as long as it supports web browsing over WiFi and PDF.
@Rex
Not to sure about that, but 3G should definitely be standard and contract optional.
Excellent robust industrial design asusual from Asus. Hey, cool typo! AsusUal. LOL! Anyway, this would be great to have around the office for reading tech docs away from the confines of the desktop.
All said, it will be interesting to see if whatever Apple have lined up for next week introduces some radical new display tech that does full colour 'eInk' and motion video with few side effects. (Me thinks 300DPI LCD with some very advanced tech that improves the contrast for long term 'e-reading'.)
Looks nice but why is it next to the iphone?
@Tekky
to compare size.
@Acey Just makes me smile that if that is the case why did not the Asus staff at the Asus UK HQ use a Asus phone beside the Asus ebook instead of an Apple Iphone.
This 101 stuff for the marketers who understand the psychology (visual) of association. Nice
@NeoSeer Who the hell knows how an asus phone looks? Has anybody seen one, and are they making them yet at all? Marketing is one thing, but common sense trumps marketing any day.
@Tekky
Because the iPhone is the most recognizable and most copied mobile device in the civilized world so it makes it easier to compare the size to the tablet.
@Average White Boy
Or a dollar, or a pencil, or a playing card, or a DVD case, or an Eee PC, or...
Holy cr@p!
such great viewing angle!
and blacks are BLAAACK!
I'm curious about the applications. Boring old dictionary/thesaurus or something...fancy? hmmm...
You know, when I see multiple official images of a device, and yet not a single video of the interface in action, I immediately think that the interface must be garbage or vapor. Of course I am also the type that could care less about the appearance of my device as long as it is functional, and not a fingerprint magnet.
I like the design
It looks really nice.
And ironic that an electronic book has such poorly written text. :)
love it how much?
I love this :-P
but the screen size seems not big enough for reading A4 pdf file?!
This is a great device and provides the solution for book lovers.
It's serves the purpose of portability and it would be suitable for viewing PDFs in the landscape mode.
BTW, the price point is super and a serious reader would not be looking for a device that can play videos while reading, i just want to read a book and annotate. I hate the idea that gadget lovers want one thing for everything.
The DR950 looks and sounds amazing. I am leaning toward the smaller Asus myself at this point-I like the idea of the color screen for a change. ( have a Kindle now and am looking for a color screen-better for reading magazines, etc. I hope the price of the two new Asus readers are reasonable!
