NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 and GTX 470 Fermi cards launching March 26th
It's okay, we understand your confusion, but the news here isn't that NVIDIA uses CoTweet as its Twitter client. What's exciting is that the GeForce GTX 480 and GTX 470 -- the company's first to use the new Fermi architecture -- are just over a month from release. Friday, March 26th, and given that also happens to coincidence with the kickoff date for Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) East 2010 (of which NVIDIA is a major sponsor), we tend to think that's not just some convenient coincidence.

Sigh.. got my hopes up with that major news on monday crap
@Broderbund
But keep fingers crossed that its not again a pathetic 9800 series rehash
I have lost faith in nvidia :(
@GnuGeek
I don't know about you guys, but I am still running some 8800GT in SLI and I can play every game just fine. Why should I spend $$$$$$$$$ on next gen shit if I don't notice a difference.
@Evan
I'm guessing you aren't using a large screen.
@Evan
Heh, I'm still goin' strong on a 6800GS.
@Evan Depends on whether or not you want to shell out for a card that's fully DX11-compatible. Being that my laptop is running an old Mobility Radeon X1600 and my desktop is running a far older GeForce FX5600, I'd tap that.
@Broderbund
pssh my voodoo 5 plays all my games just fine...this new stuff is total overkill
@Evan I'm still using an 8800GT with a 4GHz C2D and I run a lot of games at 1920x1080 well. DiRT2 runs well with settings turned up quite high in native res.
However, it does have the occasional stutter, is very noisy and runs very hot. Even though my 8800GT has served me well I'll certainly be looking to ATi for my new card, probably a 5850 when they fall in price or when something like a 5790 turns up with good performance:dollar.
@Streetfights "pssh my voodoo 5 plays all my games just fine...this new stuff is total overkill"
The sentiment is both right and wrong.
It is right, since we do not want competition and innovation to stop.
It is also wrong for the simple reason that screen resolutions have hit a plateau: 1920x1200 and 2560x1600. Both actual GTX2xx and Radeon 5xxx cards are capable of driving the resolutions in pretty much all games.
The ATI wasn't even hiding the fact that Eyefinity was introduced mostly as a mean to justify the excessive performance of 5870 and 5970 cards. Because otherwise there is little to no use for it right now.
It's about damn time!
@keplenk That's my damn birthday, I wonder if that means I get one free?
Considering these are already up for preorder for $699, the ATI power/price ratio is looking better and better.
@Bamboo Your probably right, but we really don't know just how much faster these are yet. It might (almost) justify the price.
@Bandit5317
I don't know about how deep your pockets are, but I'm not shelling out $699 for a graphics card, even if it rendered graphics in 7d. If the lower end cards don't compete in price and performance with the Radeons, I'll give up waiting for nVidia to get their act together.
@Delta
they won't. The GF100 is a huge chip. they can only make profits from it if they sell it in high-end, expensive cards.
the mid-range and low-end cards will have to be made up entirely of last-gen's architecture, which are cheaper to manufacture. they'll probably rebrand them as the GT3xx series though.
@willyolio They already confirmef that the old garbage will be re-badged as gtx3xx ...
@Bahumbug Long live the 8800GT, i mean the 9800GT, I mean the GTS240, ah forget it we give up nobody's buying this BS.
Bottleneck much?
What is so revolutionary about these cards?
@questionexclamation http://www.nvidia.com/content/PDF/fermi_white_papers/NVIDIA_Fermi_Compute_Architecture_Whitepaper.pdf
Nvidia propaganda, but an interesting read nontheless.
@questionexclamation
The GTX 480 is about 5% faster than the 5870.
Dual GPU solutions are impossible due to die size, heat, and power consumption.
It will cost far more than the 58xx series due to low yields and the size of the card. (Some people say about $700- other says 400-500)
Oh, the only revolutionary thing here is it has a dedicated hardware tessellation unit.
Nvidia has a bad egg here - Same as their FX series cards.
@Gamecheater
Ohhh i was reading about the GF100 with like...CUDA cores and stuff so i thought they were putting the high end workstation graphic technology into the gaming cards...
Engadget - Can we have more workstation card news? I'm much more interested in that than gaming graphics.
@Gamecheater
The performance numbers are just rumors at the moment.
@einhanderkiller
I agree, the performance and price are rumors, but the large die size, heat, and power consumption are not.
@questionexclamation
you're right. anandtech (dot com) has a bunch of good info about that.
Oh good, in a month Nvidia will release two DX11 parts. Not like AMD has a dozen out already or anything.
What they need more than these top-performance cards is midrange ones.
@Nitesh
We have midrange cards. They are the highrange cards from last year.
@Gamecheater but those cards from last year don't do DX11....
@Luffy but my 5770 is. i love it! plays everything pretty nicely and i can easily add another one. i loved my 8800gt but nvidia has been pulling a little to much bullshit for me.
yeah wtf gives, they practically screamed hey ati, kiss our asses, we are cheaper and better, or ARE WE, seriously if they don't give and drop it like 400 bucks, i am flying for ATI, it's not worth 700$,
Fuck yes. That is all.
Nvidia just needs to stop toying with my emotions, I am a sad little man, and now THIS!!!!
hopefully these cards will come w/Fergi songs... free advertisement for the artist.
I hate to be a pain...but did you proof-read that last sentence at all? =P
@Benjulious
hahaha it makes no sense, i get it.
Aww, how cute, they think people still care.
@Leindurstit
+1
I lost interest after they delayed it for the second time.
This is the SAME FREAKIN TIME that 6 core gulftown is coming out.... I might just take the plunge and make a freakin AWESOME PC.
Don't hold your breath, go pick up an ATI 5xxx series card and start gaming.
@reallynotnick seconded. but unfortunately i will most likely be skipping the 5000 series because i have no money. can't wait for 6000!
wtf engadget! i just want to bash nvidia and i can't even comment!
@Wildman
lol or not.
@Wildman
Same old rotten comment system eh.
From what I understand Fermi is "more" than just for games. What that "more" is you can go google for yourself. Point is if your looking for a gaming card ATI/AMD won't steer you wrong. If your those people who can benefit from parallel processing and massive processing power and occasionally dabble in gaming go grab a Fermi. For my wallet/intentions ATI/AMD please.
@SnapCracklePop
Isn't that what workstation cards are for? It's not like there are thousands of developers out there writing commercial applications for CUDA. All that stuff is pure business and science. The consumer gets no benefit from all these additions that nVidia took years to make and now they are tossing them in consumer cards and charging $700. Someone over there needs to think about whether this is the best business strategy for them to be pursuing.
@Delta We can think of Fermi as an all in one solution really, something for gaming and the scientific/business stuff.
@SnapCracklePop
Yes, since I can split atoms with my mind, I will stick with AMD.
I hope the release of these cards drops the price of the Radeon cards a bit :fingerscrossed:
This is going to rockk..!!!!!!
why would this drop the price of the radeon cards they aren't even competing with these those are the fair better deal, theses are Insane prices to pay for a 5% power upgrade.
