Spring Design's Alex pushed to first week of March
February 22nd came and went with nary a word from Spring Design about its Alex availability. Now, after a bit of prodding, we're being told to check back during the first week of March; that's when you'll be able to order your dual-screen, 3.5-inch Android and 6-inch EPD e-Reader. So, $359 for Alex or $499 for the iPad launching just a few weeks later... decisions, decisions.

isn't it the same as the nook?
@Billy it's more smexy :)
@Billy Apparently not: http://www.springdesign.com/us/features/index.action
@funkstar oooo ok. thanks.
@nicholiservia
sorry to inform you but the ipad is NOT a laptop.
@nicholiservia You do realise HTML5 won't be used by 99.9999% of the websites on the web for at least another few years?
@nicholiservia
HTML 5 will not help the iPad. It cannot replace Flash right now or ever. It has no DRM support and doesn't have the animation features that Flash provides. Do your homework before you chant the mad ravings of Steve Jobs.
@nicholiservia
Can I have your SSN? I'd like to schedule your IRS audit and tax evasion proceedings.
@nicholiservia
"once HTML5 is released" -- Released?
What do you mean "Released" ?
You mean once it becomes actually ratified as an actual standard by the W3C? Wikipedia says it won't be eve CONSIDERED for CANDIDATE recommendation until 2012, and ACTUAL recommendation in 2022! Have fun browsing the shitty non-flash web on your douche pad for TWELVE YEARS (ROFL!).
Meanwhile (today, right now, in 2010), Flash content accounts for SEVENTY-FIVE PERCENT of the entire internet.
@DoctarPeppar
Well if Wikipedia says its true...
easy:
if you wanna read: alex
if you gotta be coolio: ipad
@fokka and you can flip the ipad around to show pictures to your friends, too... just make sure you don't drop it.
@fokka The iPad truly is a Gangsta's Paradise.
I had a date with ALEXia at the AMAZON. Her love for me KINDLEd like the candle fire burning through the night. All i could think about was getting my NOOKie but all that changed when i found out she was wearingan IPAD.
@Glen Quagmire
so clever...
@think before you react
Giggty :D
why on earth would someone want a big, color advertising space right beneath one's book they are reading?
disgusting.
How much drive space is on this? No word on it's site that I could see...
@think before you react
the site says 256MB internal + 2GB flash
Thanks for your help. I'm guess the 2gb is upgradeable...?
@think before you react
it's got a microSD slot, so yea.. expand away!
Notion Ink's Adam , FOR THE MOTHERBITCH WIN!
"So, $359 for Alex or $499 for the iPad launching just a few weeks later... decisions, decisions."
Neither? Unlike the nook, the Alex's LCD seems slapped on rather than a useful and integrated part of the experience. As for the iPad, it's less functional than a netbook--but with a comparable battery life and an LCD screeen--not what I'd call an ideal eReader. I don't see how they're in the same category.
they're not
oh, Steve Jobs...what are we gonna do with you?
@User Formerly Known as Dave
first of all Nook is way slow, second Alex runs on Android which means lots of new applications can be run or developed for it(btw i do now that nook runs android, but its lcd screen is not as usefull as alex), like email, Instapaper, twitter, facebook, etc. I will buy Alex because for me its like an Ipod touch with e-ink screen, which would be an ideal device for me. But i gotta say, 2.5mm jack for headphones is really bad design decision
Neither, both are stopgaps to something greater, I'll just keep using my kindle app on my iPhone. I'm waiting for the hybrid screens before I invest in any type of reader.
@69camaroSS
Get the Notion Ink Adam, It is $20 more than this and has a hybrid display. Comes out later this year.
@SolidSnake
Oh you know I've bee waiting expectantly for that thing! Still waiting for a good review, but the screen looked awesome.
YES! Full (mostly) use of the Android Marketplace, good battery life, e-ink screen, and snappy response time is my idea of the perfect ereader (I like books).
The price seems a little much, but hopefully competition drives that down some.
"So, $359 for Alex or $499 for the iPad launching just a few weeks later... decisions, decisions. "
What the hell? How is that even a decision? One is an ereader, one is a glorified iPod Touch. The two don't even compare... unless you're one of those people who still don't understand the difference between a regular LCD screen and the e-ink type display on an ereader ;)
@paul34 Exactly. eInk can't be used in the dark, is only black and white and extremely slow to update so useless for any kind of video or animation. The iPad's IPS screen is clearly superior in every way except battery life.
@madgunde
...and reading
@madgunde
Have fun burning out your eyes. There's a reason E-ink induces much less eye strain then an LCD.
For the ereaders trying to decide:

Uh, NEITHER! If I had to get a tablet I'd wait for the Notion Ink Adam (in absence of the Courier). But then again none of these things are good for anything other than the most basic functions like Internet browsing or looking at photos. Then I realized that if I wanted any productivity I'd need a laptop/netbook/tablet combo like the hp touchsmart tm2 - which has touchscreen as well as full Win 7, pen support, etc.
If I were looking for an e-reader I'd get the Nook, Kindle or the like. Or the aforementioned Notion Ink Adam, which sports a Pixel Qi screen.
i think i would rather go with this than the ipad (i tampoon =) cuz this runs android
Or I could wait for the much more open and more powerful Notion Ink Adam to come out in May.
@ChamPro
This option will only appeal to intelligent informed people.
eink non-touchscreen without note taking is LAME
