Samsung SHW-M120S to be first Android phone with Bluetooth 3.0?
Samsung's all about records: firsts, biggests, smallests, thinnests, you get the idea. Indeed, it was just a few weeks ago that the company managed to slip the very first Bluetooth 3.0 certified handset through -- but these guys never rest, and it looks like they're already prepping to follow up that feat by throwing Android into the mix. The Bluetooth SIG is showing certification for an SHW-M120S model that apparently features a 3.3-inch WVGA AMOLED display, 5 megapixel autofocus primary cam plus VGA secondary, WiFi, GPS, HSDPA, and -- yes, you guessed it -- a Bluetooth Core Version of 3.0, meaning you'll likely be able to fling files around to your house full of Bluetooth 3.0-capable devices with the greatest of ease. The presence of a T-DMB tuner means this sucker is targeted squarely at the South Korean market, but we've no doubt Sammy plans on taking 3.0 global so that it can... you know, have the world's most Bluetooth 3.0 devices. PuntoCellulare seems to have a pretty good shot of it, and it looks pretty much how you'd expect any self-respecting Samsung smartphone to look in 2010 -- in other words, there's nothing that screams "I can wirelessly transfer data short distances at heretofore-unknown speeds" just by looking at it, and that's totally fine by us. Rumor is we'll see this launch "in the next few weeks."
[Thanks, juanvaldez]
Update: Turns out PuntoCellulare just recycled a shot of the M100S, so we don't yet know what the M120S will look like; the screen's a bit smaller on this new model, for one thing, so we should be dealing with a more diminutive shell.

Do I spy a forward facing camera
@AlienSix "5 megapixel autofocus primary cam plus VGA secondary"
Yep! :P
@ChazClout "Awes!"
Cant buy Samsuck phones no matter how good the specs.
HTC ftw!
@AlienSix
I'd bet on it being a brightness or proximity sensor, actually. The iPhone and Nexus One (among others) have 'em if you catch it in the right light.
@dcormier
Even the specs say it's has a secondary camera.
80% of phones with 3G have a front facing camera anyway (Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson...). The Android phones so far have been the exception.
@HerbieDerb
its samsung. and specs aren't everything. the radiowaves form htcock phones are worse than good samsung specs
@minijoo Sales #'s speak for themselves
@AlienSix If you'll look at the SHW M100S, this m120s has a total resemblance (800MHz processor and sports a 3.7-inch AMOLED touchscreen (WVGA), 5MP camera) except of course with the bluetooth 3.0 capability. More: http://bit.ly/samsung-shw-m100-described-again
For some reason, I read "fling flies" instead of "fling files" in the article. My eyes need some rest
@AlienSix If its for the Korean market, its not all that weird to have front facing cameras, as video calls have been around for a while now.. I wouldnt be surprised if they take it out for the US version..
Looks like a very nice Handset =D
Wish it had a bigger screen. :(
@kpenning Some sites I saw this on were reporting a Super AMOLED. I'd prefer that to be the case rather than a bigger screen, but of course, both would be a dream come true.
Does that trackpad have to look so lame...
@ThatDudeSolo You can always trust carriers to screw it up :)
Other than that its quite a sleek looking device.
Damn you Samsung, for your awesome hardware and your shitty support.
I wont buy any samsung phone again! They are liar..
Yes! I'll be able to send hilarious GIFs at stupendous speeds to all the other SHW-M120S owners!
Samsung's " firsts, biggests, smallests, thinnests," is a double-edged sword as they are infamous for dropping support for last-gen devices. Omnia users in Korea know what it feels like to be greeted with smile and then be ignored when they ask for support after 6 months.
@larciel They updated the OMNI II, it's just they didn't make the update easy enough to get. I think they are slowly learning lessons, but I think your point is still well taken. If they want to be a player in the smartphone market they'll have to learn quicker, because techies don't forgive as easily as most consumers.
Driod does.
@MoonWalkerCTE ..Everything
I wonder what inspired the design...
@AckbarsFist Yes, like all touchscreen phones, it looks like it ... or not ;)
A true Android phone need a Home button, a Menu button, a Back button and a Search button.
The Search button is very important in Android 1.6 and higher. Samsung seems to have a problem to understand that.
Samsung is more interested in their own standards of interface than anyone else's. As evidenced by their porting of the horrid "TouchWiz" UI to Android.
I bought a Galaxy. Hardware wise it was a fantastic phone but Samsung's sell it and forget about it approach resulted in me taking it back. If you want an Android phone that will be supported in the long term buy from HTC.
@laze
The track pad could double as a search button.
That must be expensive. What did you name it?
Looks... nice...?
Is it just me? Or is any one else getting annoyed by the announcement of a billion new Android handsets with no specific release dates for any of them? I mean, seriously, if you look up the supposedly upcoming sets for the carriers around here, most of it is speculation about if the handset is coming and to which carrier with no estimated ship dates or anything. (Some may say quarter X, but that's not good enough.)
I'm off of contract, looking to switch providers and pick up a decent phone. Currently eyeballing Verizon for it's version of the Nexus One, the Incredible, and the Tour2. Also eyeballing AT&T for the HTC Desire. Eyeballing Sprint for the Hero2, Nexus One, SuperSonic, and Tour2. *Would* be eyeballing T-Mobile, they have the Bold 9700 (which I'm using now), and are coming out with the CLIQ XT... but come on... Android 1.5? Are you serious?
Now we have this new Samsung that's coming out to God knows who and, yeah buddy, no release date.
Very annoyed.
@sodaboy581 Verizon. Best network most 3G, same price as ATT, and leading the LTE 4G race. Love my Droid, looking forward to Nexus One. Just my 2¢
@Trocks797
No 4G phones for VZ have been announced yet though. Supersonic is the only Android 4G phones at the moment. But yes, if you're looking for a network, I'd say Verizon, Sprint or T-Mo. Anything but AT&T. If you're looking to get an Android phone, you'll regret it in the long run going with AT&T.
@sfox8 Yeah, I really don't wanna go on AT&T. Especially after hearing how they neutered their first Android phone. Verizon looks pretty good, though. $39.99 plus $30 for web is a nice $69.99 (don't need to pay text messaging fees because you can just use Google Voice app for that...)
Sprint, though, offers $69.99 for unlimited talk, text, and web (though the talking is mobile to mobile to ANY mobile in the US, regardless of carrier, which is fine... and the 450 other minutes would be fine for land lines...)
T-Mobile also has a nice plan, similar to the Verizon set up, for $29.99 for 500 minutes of talk, then add $20 for the web (these prices using the Even More Plus option...) Which comes to $49.99, using Google Voice for texting again...
... I just need to get my hands on a freakin' decent Android phone. I might just give in, stop waiting, and buy a Nexus One outright from Google and use it on T-Mobile... Honestly tired of waiting! If I can hold my composure, I'll wait for Verizon's Nexus One, though. The hardware issues of T-Mobile's Nexus One (you know the losing of 3G if you hold it a certain way) might still be an issue, unless they secretly fixed them in a hardware revision with Nexus One's currently being shipped out from Google. (But that might not be likely...) I'd figure the Verizon model probably won't suffer from this problem as they'd probably have research it anyway and perhaps the Verizon network wouldn't have this issue with the Nexus One due to the network acting differently anyway...
So yeah... here I go. Playing the waiting game. I pray that the rumored March 23rd date for Verizon Wireless' Nexus One comes true. If it does, I'm pretty much SO there. All the other Android devices I'm waiting for feature that HTC Sense UI on top of the Android interface, and although I'm sure it's beautiful, for some reason I find myself just wanting to use vanilla Android 'cuz who knows what kind of issues Sense UI adds on top of things...?
I read that as Android 3.0 for some reason. ;(
i thought every android phone needed 4 keys... menu, search, home, back.. i see none
Sammy makes the best screens no doubt and are basically the new SONY when it comes time to push out new technologies. Then why is it their smartphones so far have been largely seen as sub-par?
Bada OS... we hardly knew you.
So many phones I would want... if they only had keyboards.
I'm sorry but these phones just start looking closer and closer to the iPhone.
