Now that the excitement of the
EVO 4G announce has finally worn off, it's time to get down to more practical matters -- in a street fight, would the WiMAX-powered beast hold its own against an
HD2 and a
Desire, for example? We had all three in a room just now, and here's what we've got to say:
- It feels significantly beefier than the HD2, but in reality, it's not -- it's just a single millimeter thicker. The brushed metal back of the HD2 is a little sexier, but just by the tiniest of margins; it's hard to argue with soft touch and a kickstand, obviously.
- We would've never noticed this without the Desire next to it, but the EVO's text is pretty huge, a side effect of the fact that it's running the same resolution on a screen 0.6 inches larger. It's not annoying, really, but it struck us that they could've comfortably fit quite a bit more information on the screen without getting cramped. The Desire's display is more vibrant, too, but that makes sense -- we're indoors under artificial lighting and the Desire has AMOLED on board.
- The EVO's got touch-sensitive buttons below the display that function much like the Nexus One's, but no worries: they work quite a bit better. We think this might be because there's more touch-sensitive bezel real estate below the keys; on the Nexus One, you've got to be far too accurate for comfort.
- Interestingly, this is the first EVO we've seen today with a silver earpiece grill -- Sprint's have been red. We've confirmed with HTC that production devices will be silver.

THIS WAS THE BEST EPIC PWNAGE POST I EVER READ
@samin100
i love engadget
@samin100 And then there was one phone to rule them all..
@samin100 keep the comparison's coming compare to every top phone on all the major american networks i am 99.7% sure this is the phone i am getting come june but dont want to risk passing anything up.
@samin100
Easily impressed much? (No offense to Chris, it was an excellent post.)
@samin100 Totally agree. 3 top of the line devices. 2 OSes. 1 Manufacturer. FIGHT!
Evo will eat HD2 for breakfast
@staticjethro
No it will eat it for lunch.
It already had breakfast:
Palm Pre with Pixi butter. Nail, meet coffin.
@Celz
Hahahahaha. You're exactly right
@samin100
THE WORLD HAS ENDED! THE MESSIAH HAS COME!
@Celz : I am getting this phone, but the only problem with that someone will come out with an even better phone shortly after. :(
@samin100 is it me, or does the hdmi slot give the evo the sexiest bottom side ever......thanks for killing my excitement for my N1 after only three weeks of ownership engadget.
@samin100
i agree best phone ever 4g video hd 720p recording wow cant fn wait
@samin100 I always thought phones that said "with google" werent gonna sport SenseUI. Or am I just thinking of Google Experience phones here.
@HerbieDerb
EVO 4g: Go home and be a family man!
@samin100 Yeah, the desire is a nice phone, but this supersonic phone make the specs of the desire a bit minute. Desire impressions: http://bit.ly/nexus-desire-view
@One Love
It will be kind of tough to top 4G considering the fact that Sprint is the only network that supports it.
@recharged95 That's entirely up to opinion. While I do appreciate that all the phones in this post are extremely good, I prefer webOS to Android.
offer it on the $70 and you've got yourself a customer Sprint.
@tacovsgrilledcheese
+1 for Hot Rod reference in screen name, -1 for ridiculous expectations.
@tacovsgrilledcheese
I just realized you weren't talking about the on-contract price, you were talking about the monthly fees. -1 to myself.
@Gad Get yeah i probably should have said "A MONTH". I'm not THAT cheap lol. I'm willing to shell out for a phone of such awesome proportions.
@tacovsgrilledcheese
Blehhh... I dont seem this phone being better than the HD2 in no way... one of its downs is the fact that, because Sprint's monthly bill are so cheap and fair, with a two year contract I will end up paying for this phone at least 5 times the price without contract. T-Mobile 21MBPS ftw!
Thanks for giving me the chance to compare the two...but now I want both!
WHY ARE THERE ONLY 2 phones in the pic when its a 3 person free-for-all battle?
@samin100
Because it's EVO vs HD2 and EVO vs Desire. Not EVO vs. HD2 vs Desire
@krische
oh... now i get it
thanks 4 xplanein
Is it me or is the EVO's screen fucking amazing for an LCD? It could just be the shot but it looks better than the HD2 and almost on par with the desire even indoors
@billobob
I'd imagine it's you or the shot.
I can't imagine that HTC is making two completely different 4.3" screens, for what will probably both end up being relatively low volume devices.
In other words, I can almost guarantee they're the exact same screen.
@billobob
Actually you're on to something. It's probably the same screen, but WinMo only handles 65k colors and android supports more. The screen on my TP2 looks better in Android than in WinMo.
So will the LCD screen on the EVO work in sunlight like the iPhone and my Palm Pre?
@krische
I would look for the reviews of the HD2 in sunlight... if I recall, the sunlight readability is not that great.
I have a PT2 which I hate in sunlight... but I knew it was supposed to be bad, I was just desperate for a phone finally, and on Sprint. I know HTC makes nice looking phones, but this will be my last HTC if they can't figure out how to make screens legible in sunlight / daylight.
I know Nokia, SE, Apple can be read outdoors. Samsung, Motorola, LG, hit or miss. HTC, usually terrible sunlight performance. I truly wish more than all the other things every site reports, that Engadget would focus on reporting sunlight / daylight performance on all cell phones / mid's hence forth.
@Please forgive me
I have a TP2, not pt2.
@Please forgive me
I have the TP2. Not pt2. :/
@Please forgive me
O i give up. :(
@Please forgive me
From Engadget's review of the HD2
"The display is thankfully capacitive and multitouch (a hand-rolled concoction from HTC, not available in Microsoft's stock WinMo 6.5 build), and looks tremendous whether under low light or in sunnier conditions. We wouldn't say the outdoor performance was mind blowing, but it's certainly easier on the eyes than lots of its rivals, and the size of the display helps with general clarity in less than ideal situations."
Part of the reason the TP2's screen is bad in the sun is the resistive layer. None of these phones have that problem.
@jon
Thanks for pointing that out Jon... I guess I was remembering something from PocketNow or GSMArena maybe. Yes, I found some comments.

@Please forgive me
I like that you posted that crappy picture specifically, but not the comment that goes with it.
"This picture doesn't quite capture the visibility of the screen in bright light, which is actually above average."
In these here parts, we call that spin. /jk
@jon
I didn't post quotes from either article because I figured anyone who wants to can read, but most people want to make the decision for themselves and see the image of the screen... I don't care if the whole world loves the way that screen looks in daylight, if I can't read it comfortably, then it sucks to me. Hence why I referred to the picture first.
I'm not that devious... no need. I was just point out where I got the impression... I am not trying to persuade anyone else to agree with me. It's just a screen on a phone.
@Please forgive me
Devious or not, you posted a picture so bad that the guy who took it captioned the picture as such.
That's why I called it spin.
Saying you wanted people to look at that picture and make up their own minds, doesn't make that better.
@jon
I don't have any other pictures. I can't bother to look for any. Thousands of people have bought these, someone please take a fucking better picture to satisfy Jon. Anyone?

i guess engadget finally matured and stopped comparing every new phone to the iPhone
@samin100
They will never do that to their precious iPhone in the face of this beast. They only match it against "direct competition".
/s
@samin100
I guess engadget doesn't want to face the truth that the iPhone isn't king anymore so they're not comparing it to these beastly phones anymore. This day should be like in the Guineuss (spelling??) Book of World records for longest amount of time where there were no apple posts on www.engadget.com
@samin100
Nevermind that the very first post about this phone has a side by side with the iPhone, and this post is about comparing it to other large-screened HTC phones...
@samin100
Engadget will never let go of their baby...
Oh, and hai samin
@samin100
you know why they compare everything to the iPhone? because if they don't, you all will. stfu about it.
@samin100 thats because the iPhone is so far behind, its not even funny
