In a communication with
Phone Scoop, Adobe has tidied up the meaning of its CEO's words from
a recent interview with
Fox Business. In it, Shantanu Narayen repeatedly tells us to expect new Android, WebOS and BlackBerry devices with integrated Flash compatibility during the second half of 2010, but Adobe has now explained that he didn't mean that the Flash delivery schedule will be delayed, not at all. You see, Narayen was talking about hardware coming out in the second half, but Flash 10.1 itself will still be arriving "to first mobile platforms including Android ... before the end of the first half of 2010." Interesting that only Android is mentioned explicitly, but at least this provides some reassurance to any fretting
Flash fans out there.
Personally, I love Flash. Until HTML5 gets a bunch of animation tools for designers and animators, Flash will have a welcome home.
Without Flash, there would be no South Park or HomeStar Runner.
Now... Flash VIDEO can go die in a fire.
@Kamalot
Flash ADS can go die in a fire!
@Kamalot
Flash is the lazy man's tool for developing interactive content. Coincidentally, this is the reason why it is so popular.
@Kamalot
Good point - anyone who's saying HTML5 will be the death of Flash is delusional. HTML5 does not replace most of flash's functionality (I'd say at least 70% of it). HTML5 may be better as an online video format, but Flash is sooooo much more than that.
Ignorance is bliss, I suppose.
@yulebellow
Personally I'm happy that Apple rejected flash and I think Adobe should thank Apple! Now before you downrank me... here's why:
Flash never got as much publicity/attention/die hard fans/fanbois... (whatever) as now due to rejection by Apple! So now flash is going to be on all other devices soon and also, thanks to some beating, they'll finally fix the performance issues (hopefully).
So Apple did us all a favor actually. And no, I don't think Flash is going anywhere... not anytime soon at least! :)
@Kamalot
Thinking about the EVO coming out in JUNE sometime... could we possibly see Flash 10.1 as a "SUPRISE"? from HTC and Sprint.... Since the first half technically ends in JUNE...
@Kamalot i want farmville on my iphone, flash or html5 i dont care but the sooner the better
@Nitesh and you sir are ignorant with that 70 percent figure that you just pulled out of the sky, there is very little that HTML5 isn't capable of that flash is, such as DRM amongst other things that really won't make a difference to the end user,
HTML5 is still in it's infancy and is already capable of doing what it took Adobe/Macromedia 10+ years to accomplish, that fact alone speaks volumes.
@yulebellow Or die in flashblock
@yulebellow When/If Flash Ads die, then it will be replaced by equally annoying HTML5 Ads. Be careful of what you wish for, because at least now you can block annoying flash ads with AdBlock Plus. Who knows if you'll be able to do the same with equally annoying HTML5 Ads?!
@Kamalot
All knowing S.J. has decreed that Flash be abolished all over the land of the internettings...
so will it be.
@Nitesh You also have to consider the development of real applications that have access to core hardware components. Flash is nothing more than a plug-in for a browser that is very limited when compared to a full-fledged application. There are several iPhone and iPad apps that have an online flash equivalent that demonstrate this (MLB At Bat, to name one).
@yulebellow
enjoy your iAD that stevey is going to install on your idevice
@MattsZ
The end users aren't the content providers or webmasters. If they want DRM with Flash, the end user is going to get DRM with Flash.
I like my 10.1
AND YOU SHOULD TOO!!!
@Nitesh Um, I'm not a math major or anything, but isn't 70% "most" by pretty much every standard?
@yulebellow
Dont forget if it wasnt for flash annoying ads, sites like engadget, joystiq and many others would probably not exist.
@OCEAN CLAK
what ads?
addblocker / kaspersky...
@cherryboom Wow, way to reiterate a point damn near EVERYONE knew, and call him a noob for it.
Let's point out some more future events, and name-call people for no reason , shall we? LCD's will be replaced by something better. New versions of Windows and OSX will be released. 2011 is the next year after 2010.
@yulebellow Do you remember GIF adds? those are going to be comming back... or JS or Ajax....
@justinpe so how should interactive content be built in your opinion?
@Kamalot
Apple could just solve the "we don't want flash on our platform" by just buying Adobe.
@thejared oh, it's that simple? You must be one of them super geniuses!!
Stop Complaining About Flash:
http://gregoire.org/2010/03/31/stop-complaining-about-flash/
@jdm28690
As opposed to how much you enjoy having everything you do fed into the ad targeting system of Google (an ad company not a IT company) with your AdDroid.
@thejared lol wouldn't that be great. Apple would do that just to shut down Adobe.
I'm really doubting Adobe right now. They suck at optimizing flash on desktop; how are they going to bring it to mobile without either overheating every phone and burning everyone's cheeks or running down the battery in 2 hrs?
Also, they've delayed this way too many times. And when they bring it to Android, it will be already too late and probably disappoint everyone as well.
I give a big MEH to Adobe.
@Kamalot
I think South Park is animated using Maya.
@Kamalot
Yeah, if all other mobile platform support flash, it will force the Apple to support flash as well. So Apple instead of trying to kill flash, are forced to make flash stronger. If Apple don't support flash, it will most likely be a suicidal move.
Note to Apple, it's pretty hard to kill a world standard, just like how many time you tried to kill Windows but failed.
@einhanderkiller
yes it is made with maya, previously PowerAnimator
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Park#Animation
@MFrasier Interactive content should be built using open standards without the requirement of a proprietary plug-in. Some interactive content is better suited as a stand-alone app rather than running in a browser which requires a plug-in and can't access core hardware components. This is even true on a desktop. DirectTV's Supercast and Hulu's desktop applications are perfect examples of this.
@1mc That's only if those other platforms support Flash well. If Flash runs like ass on Android, then everyone will go, "Apple was right!" As it is, I'm not holding out hope that Flash will run with any kind of decency on my G1.
@ai4281
Actually Flash AS3 is programing language. It means that performance will depends on developer.
here is some very basic tips for Optimizing Flash.
-avoid Bitmap image animation
-make another layer for animation elements
-remove EventListener when it is not used
-cache as bit map for complex vector object
-make repeat objects as symbol
some Flash app totally ignore this...as result...it become system hog.
@s73v3r dude G1 sucks, I already upgraded my G1 to droid. The browser start from 6-10 second to 1 second. Don't hold ur breath on G1. It's really bad
@1mc "Note to Apple, it's pretty hard to kill a world standard, just like how many time you tried to kill Windows but failed."
In fact it can be pretty easy, and Apple never tried to kill Windows.
@Kamalot
Exactly. Try telling the people at Newgrounds to go HTML5.

@Atkins ohh yeah so what this I'm a PC and I'm a Mac advertisement.
Why if Apple took a shot at PC if you don't want to beat them?? So you are telling me that if a gunman fired at you and miss you, then he said he wasn't shooting for you. You gonna take it??... pfffttttt..
Pretty easy ehh, If it is so easy, why windows is still dominating for 20 years... so easy that nobody can do it??? You tell me
@yulebellow they will be replaced by html 5 ads and since who pages will be html5 in interested in how effective the ad /ad video blockers will work with it exciting times we live in yes , yes indeed
@1mc If you look at Apple's strategies they hardly are fighting for market share (they aren't even competing in the low-end market). It pretty sure means that they don't want to kill Windows.
@1mc "ohh yeah so what this I'm a PC and I'm a Mac advertisement."
This is your argument on Apple trying to kill Windows? Come on.
"Why if Apple took a shot at PC if you don't want to beat them?"
Apple didn't took a shot. Otherwise they will be present all over the market with netbooks, cheaper computers and a broader selection of devices. Yet they aren't.
About killing a standard:
"Pretty easy ehh, If it is so easy, why windows is still dominating for 20 years... so easy that nobody can do it??"
Nobody needs to do it, and nobody big enough decided to do it.
@jaxim HTML5 is just that: HTML. That means that the client can change it before it's displayed/processed, and for that reason HTML5 videos will also be quite blockable.
Excellent - this will be on the market leader Symbian, the second place RIM and the rising Android. Also it'll be interesting to see how 10.1 performs and what lessons Adobe have learned from competition.
@MarkAnderson
Looking for some webOS love too . :-D
@Kamalot
Yup. Them too. I wish I was more optimistic about their future although even if it doesn't work out for Palm someone will surely buy it and use it.
@MarkAnderson
Yeah, it feels good having a phone that has 7% market share when that loser down the street has a phone with 4% market share.
LOL!! Let's all point at the guy with the 4% market share phone!!!
That's the point you were making, right?
@suicidebob
Symbian has more than 40% and RIM over 20%.
Do you actually have a point at all?
@MarkAnderson Oh yeah.. $ymbian baby.. can't WAIT to be watching all them hulu reruns of stuff already saved on my DVR in HD on my 300Mhz "smart" phone.. Heck, this might pull rim from the grips of death/bankruptcy.
It's going to be one helluva crying fest when hulu hits ipad/iphone before flash 10.1 hits anywhere else.. (the real crying fest.. will be when 10.1 does land.. and hulu STILL WON'T WORK ON YOUR DEVICE..)
Meh.. I'll remain hopefull.. I'd like to listen to soundcloud on my android someday.. until they figure out how to just place a damn MP3 on the site and MY ONLY REASON for wanting flash on a phone is gone as well..
@vdrumpro
The current mid tier Symbian sets use 434 MHz ARM 11 chips. Since Symbian is actually pretty well written it doesn't need a lot of horsepower to run as evidenced by the way it runs Flash Lite just fine.
You don't know what you're talking about. I suggest you do a bit of research.
Oh man thank god its not delayed.
