Onkyo busts out DP312 Ion nettop

Onkyo's just added the DP312 nettop to its lineup. This Ion-based box boasts a 1.6GHz Atom N270 CPU, 2GB of RAM, a 320GB HDD, and a DVD player to boot. So far, it looks like you'll only be able to get this one in Japan, and sold without any peripherals, it runs ¥64,800 (that's nearly $700), and can be upgraded for an additional ¥20,000 to include 4GB of RAM and a 500GB HDD.

Why? I would rather buy a commodore keyboard PC and hook it up to my TV. :D
this has some superior sound card included?
@htd
Regular people still have sound cards? O_o
@Widgetech: for the best audio experience, yes.
@Widgetech I pity those who use integrated audio. Upgrade, your ears will thank you.
@mattcoz BS. Any degradation in audio quality is from using analog ports, not a modern desktop sound processor. This should be a simple HDMI out to your receiver, making that a non-issue.
The people that beg to differ are usually the same type that insist on using monster cables, yet in blind tests can't tell a difference.
@Ducman69 He meant the using the DAC on your motherboard, not a processor on an integrated receiver.
Wow $700, I'd rather get a Mac Mini which has a Core 2 Duo!
@Synaesthesia It is overpriced, but the Mac Mini makes a very poor HTPC. Check out the dual-core 1.8Ghz 6850e Zino HD w/ 4GB ram, up to 2TB desktop harddrive, wireless-N, BluRay, and dedicated 512mb video card w/ 7.1 DTS over HDMI.
Its about the same dimensions, and after bing cashback I got mine for around $480 after tax IIRC. They are probably available on the outlet. =)
LOL. You could buy a halfway decent gaming rig in a shuttle form-factor for that much.
Remind me not to move to Japan. The prices there seem a little.........
It's 3.5x more than it deserves....
ugly, underpowered, and overpriced...
@Nicnac: $300 for a dual core Acer Revo, and another $60 for the USB tuner and you're all set... this is WAY overpriced, and a smidge fugly.
I need a good HTPC... This will not be it.
They've got to be out of their mind.
Are they high?
Unless there is some other components/features not listed, this essentially has the same guts as your typical $300 netbook, but DOESN'T have an LCD screen, nor does it have a battery back - 2 of the more expensive parts of any mobile device. And yet they found a way to charge 2X for it? Ridiculous.
Onkyo makes some pretty nice receivers...
Apparently they don't have a clue about how to make a nettop.
Kinda totally dropped the ball on this one. I have an Onkyo receiver and it is amazing for what I paid for it. I also have an old desktop hooked up to my 61" big screen. What they should be doing is making "smart receivers" that are almost like a mesh between a nettop and a receiver. Those would start flying off shelves. Not this monstrosity :(
The price may be normal for Japan though.
A $50K Corvette here costs closer to $100K after exchange rate and a million taxes in the UK.
Hopefully it'll be better quality than their a/v receivers with the HDMI logic boards frying out... once bitten twice shy.
Damn, they gettin' ripped...
It's so ugly!
