As much as Microsoft has revealed about
Windows Phone 7 thus far in the past two months, one critical, differentiating element that it's going to be able to lord over its competitors -- true Office support -- has been a bit of a black box. We're starting to see a little bit more about the Office team's next-gen mobile product now, though, thanks to a pair of new videos that have been published this week. The first focuses on the email and calendar experience, but we do see one pretty awesome trick when the demo opens a PowerPoint file inline from the email client, edits it, and sends it back to the original sender. The second video dives deeper on the actual Office hub, where we get a quick look at the Word editor -- and as you might expect, it's squeaky-clean and nearly UI-free, just like pretty much everything else in the platform. Peep the videos after the break.
[Thanks, skipper]
@cherryboom - why aren't you banned yet, anyway?
WIN!
@outlaw85 WIN indeed!! I swear WP7 was going to be my next choice of device before I saw the EVO coming out sooner. Either way, we all have some hard decisions to make in the phone purchasing department and that's a GOOD thing!!
@Dr Jones
MS, Google and Apple all make such damn good phone platforms...
I really hope MS pulls this off. If they enable WP7 with all of the Kin features, I'll be in heaven.
I love the idea of being able to take a call on my computer, etc.
iPad form + WP7 Functionality and productivity tools = HUGE SUCCESS
That's awesome-O!
YeahhhH!!!
Thats my Boi!
MSFT FTW
@outlaw85
FAIL.. PRODUCTIVITY?
The guy with a brain, paper and pencil in the back of the room is the low key one that probably owns the building you are sleeping in on your little road trip...
just use your freakin laptop and a BB
@Engadget I can't tell anymore, have these videos also been found laying in a bar?
@outlaw85
I wants this on tablet!
Ill bet that guy in the second video could easily set the new record for the fastest text message with at least 20 seconds to spare.
@outlaw85
I was waiting to see this. With a usable version of office on the phone this will cut into RIMs market share now too and not just people who are trading their iPhones in (me). iPhone has been fun, but it doesn't have quite a few things that make it a great device for me. I feel like its just a pointer to my laptop. See something on iPhone now to go laptop to do something about it. WP7 seems to have what it takes to leave the laptop in the bag. That is a big win for me.
The email experience looks so much better than iPhone. Business folks will be flocking to this.
@AppleDrank Hey I just wanna know: When you're banned for the 2nd time in a row, what flavor will you come back as next?
@outlaw85 Man, this is definitely the new hipster phone.
@N900 OrangeDrank
@outlaw85
I so can't wait for this on w tablet..... full fledged windows is just not the answer... but the new winmo is our Savior... along with android
I'm already sold, they're just showing off now.
@outlaw85
CRAP! I was ready to get the Incredible but this is making my decision much harder. Damn these plethora of choices!
@outlaw85 MS has also posted a third video showing of the Smart-sensing feature (cope/paste replacement) :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mMXGoN4-eI0
@JudgeDredd Hey, I've been hearing a bit about that feature. This isn't gonna replace c/p though. I figure when c/p is fully implemented, this will be integrated.
@PureInnovation I suppose... although if I'm supposed to be doing any heavy document-related work, I'd be using a desktop or laptop anyway and would prefer to do so. It's just the form factor and ease of use.
@PureInnovation there's one better, its called the Courier
@outlaw85
Windows Phone will fail because it doesn't support having a front facing camera.
I can't wait to get one. I love
my iPhone but hate it's limitations.
@outlaw85 I think MS has done a pretty good job to show 'simplicity' over this platform. If they can improve the marketplace of this phone then I believe this could set a new tone for the mobile industry. Not to mention that, office app looks sexy. Reactions to winphone 7. http://bit.ly/windows-phone-7-reactions-examined
@outlaw85
Pretty freakin' sweeeet!!!
If the integration amongst WP7, SharePoint, Exchange, Live, Bing, MS Office, etc. is seamless, I can see all of MS' services getting a boost from WP7 launch. Although how Courier would fit into this entire ecosystem, I am still trying to figure out...
@outlaw85 agreed, huge win... im no longer on the fence as to buy an android handset or winpho7, microsoft just stole my heart
@SteveyAyo
That's some pretty slick email!
Btw, I'd love to have Eva Valverde as my colleague! ;)
@JudgeDredd
but there's only 3 options that it gives you for sending that text to. i would rather decide what i want to do with it and the phone still doesn't fully comprehend my thoughts.
@PureInnovation
Certain features of Windows Phone 7 would reeeally benefit iPhone OS, but a 10" tablet computer with no copy and paste (a la WP7)? No thanks. haha
Cartman like WP7.
@outlaw85
oh Hellz yeah
top it off with Lighting. I'm set
@abedinthehouse
it was a girl... lol watch again her name is supposedly "Anna".
@PureInnovation That sounds a lot like the courier. Bring it on MS!
@outlaw85
Win? Are you serious?
It looks like it's unfinished. You ever set your screen resolution higher than the monitor supports and see how your desktop scrolls when you move your mouse to its edges? It looks like that as well. It's like an experimental UI designed by a first-year art student.
The only thing impressive about it are a couple of the transitions.
I find it hard to believe that they'll have astounding success with it. They'll probably find most of their support among some of the loyalists in the business community, but I don't see them coming close to Android and iPhone OS. And I think "when pigs fly" is literally appropriate for the idea of them possibly surpassing Google or Apple in the smart phone market.
@Coswyn
lol
@Dr Jones
''Either way, we all have some hard decisions to make in the phone purchasing department and that's a GOOD thing!!''
I totally agree! By year end there will be some cool phones available, but so far I am edging for a HTC WinMo7 phone, and I think (being a iPhone 3gs owner), that 4th gen iPhone looks cool but the OS 4.0 is now dated already!!!
@Coswyn I respect your opinion and all mate buttah, you are off on this one. It'll remain to be seen but the capabilities are overwhelmingly good. Maybe you should go look at some of the MIX10 vids...
a.) Gaming - Don't know if you saw it but there is NOTHING out there that comes remotely close - the 3D RPG they showed makes anything I have seen on a mobile phone look like a toy... destructible environments and smooth 3D animation...
b.) Yes - there will be a huge following with business folks. I for one use Outlook like a madman and so do most in the 25-55 range which is the area this device is sharply aimed at - integration with the standard (Word,Excel,Oulook/Exchange) is brilliant. It's seamless integration across a fantastic platform - plugging the capabilities of the web directly into the interface and App/plugins that roll smoothly through the experience versus stand along APP Store style content (which will surely be there.)
c.) Didn't think I'd ever say this... I know you may not quite agree with me here but interface wise - Android looks Googlishly Toyish... not serious - not designed or free flowing.... just modular platform built off Apple's system of Apps. I find the iPhone rather bland in comparison... it's built around a marketplace system where instead the WP7 platform provides a very compelling platform with API plugs to increase functionality - a very novel approach to the mobile paradim.
I do not doubt that this coupled with the sure to be success of KIN (again - not focused on Apps but more so the desires of social networking for 14-24) is going to really going to be very successful. At first it MAY not sell as many units but I think people will look at this device while you are playing with it and say, "what is that?? That's cool as hell..."
@AppleDrank
so whats an ipad good for?
seriously, go away anything thats not apple you come over to and just insult, yet when apples done it you kiss their ass
@Why should I have all the fun
By the time this is available, patched and stable your HTC Incredible contract will be up.
@Dr Jones
Good money says these are the "some things are missing at the launch" kinda like Windows 7 was to Vista... Realistically an Incredible or EVO contract will be over well before this is available and running stable.
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/14/charlie-kindel-on-windows-phone-7-some-things-will-be-missing-a/
DOWS!
@outlaw85
I is Blown away!
@Sogeking Why the juvenile lol? Do you seriously think this has a chance against Apple and Google? That would be delusional.
It's a nice platform, I'll give it that, but theres no way this is going to surpass a true, open platform or the Apple factor. Just look at Zune, its a niche market.
@Furious1 Your sick of your iPhones limitations? Don't compare 3.1.3 to WP7. 4.0 and WP7 will be released around the same time. iPhone has multitasking WP7 does not. I LOVE the look of this os but I'm sorry apple's OS 4 just seems to beat WP7 for me personally.
@Shanebenn iPhone and WP7 share the same type of "multitasking" technology. Being that you never have used it and don't really get how using the device works I would recommend just shutting up.
It pauses the app until its needed. It will run central thems in the background like Zune or Phone or another type of service.
@CapnDap
I am saving my pennies for when this becomes more than vapourware my friend..
@HoldenMccrotch And you guys does the opposite. Any thing from Apple you all who have never tried from clear mind just bitch and bitch and bitch. Any thing from anybody else and only praises. Any thing by MS and you just love it.
@who said what Haha, better apply for a job with MS then :) http://www.linkedin.com/pub/dir/Eva/Valverde/
Also, damn! That interface is sexy! I can see this be a big hit with people needing to get their work done on the go
@outlaw85
FAIL that UI is such a joke.
