Nokia-Microsoft partnership bears first fruit: Communicator Mobile comes to E52 and E72
Last time we used "Nokia" and "Communicator" in the same sentence, we were talking about a giant QWERTY clamshell with roots dating back to the mid '90s -- but yeah, that's most definitely not what looking at here. Instead, we're seeing the first results of Nokia's newfound friendship with Microsoft, a build of Communicator Mobile that's all set up to run on the S60-based E52 and E72. Granted, an enterprise instant messaging utility isn't something we can all use, but that's just as well since it's limited to just two devices in Nokia's range at the moment; eventually, it'll be preinstalled on "select" devices and be available to a broader selection of phones already in the lineup. This is awesome, guys -- now let's get cracking on Office, shall we?

Bears fruit? Nokia and Microsoft had sex? Amazing!
So what does this do exactly? Just an instant messenger app?
Boring..
@DoctarPeppar
Wait. You're the guy who allegedly has a hacked Vivaz with Symbian^3 and you don't know what this does?
Really?
Just... go.
@DoctarPeppar Its Outlook for Nokias
@DoctarPeppar and a pretty crappy one at that. OOOOH
@DoctarPeppar Its boring indeed, but it is important for business...
When you grow up and you have your own career you might need this kind of software along with your mobile.
Transistors are also boring, what matters is what you do with them.
@MarkAnderson
What does an S\E phone have to do with a Nokia only app?
You're a moron.
@MarkAnderson
And BTW, on Shitbian i use ProfiMail.
@DoctarPeppar ... if you have hate so much Symbian sell your Vivaz and get SE X10 or whatever you like. On anther news I am using Emoze.
@Sp4mer
I didn't pay for it :)
Borrowed it from a friend, I have an i8910 though and it's not half bad, just hoping SPB mobile shell gets updated soon to a final version with hw acceleration. The Symbian GUI is just so old and clunky it's unreal.
@DoctarPeppar
Oh well, nothings can beat the price of free ;)
If you want to waste some time , give Hiplogic a try. Other than that, I think the future of symbian should be adapting gDesk or similar homescreen-menu as a default one.
@DoctarPeppar
It's Microsoft's corporate IM client. It's pretty cool depending on how your company configures it. I have mine configured with PIC so depending on how I have it configured, I can also add plain old MSN/Yahoo/AOL users as well. You can also Federate with other companies. I'm in the early stages of federating with Microsoft so when that is done you basically can IM/voice/video chat with anybody there.
Cool stuff for busness... not much for consumers.
@TK093
It has video? Now that is cool.
They should have mentioned that.
Fring is the only video solution I've seen on Shitbian, and it's actually pretty good, but it uses Skype.
@DoctarPeppar
Sorry, was a little vague. The desktop client does video. The mobile client currently does not. I would think they would add that down the road, but who knows. The mobile client is just one small piece of the overall Office Communicator Server.
@DoctarPeppar
Really? I thought you said you had got rid of the i8910 and got an Omnia 2. Then you apparently have this hacked Vivaz and now you have the i8910 again.
It doesn't add up, son. I think you're telling porkies.
@Chris, Symbian has QuickOffice and Maemo/MeeGo AbiWord, KOffice Viewer, OpenOffice (in a hackish way, but still).
@Mr w00t
Yup. I've got Quick Office on my X6. Awesome application.
@MarkAnderson Btw, my girlfriend wants to buy a new phone and she is dying to get an X6, she wants the comes with music one,but I keep on insisting that she waits for the N8...
What you say?
(You can clearly see that I am the geek one :P)
@Mr w00t
Go with iPhone.
@DoctarPeppar hehe I had one but I bough an N900 after I saw it and havent looked back still (and NO I am not just saying I had one, I got fed up of iTunes, crappy browser, no multitasking and many more things I could go on and on)
The only thing I miss from my iPhone is the Spotify App and even that kept on crashing all the damn time and I could not even keep facebook app open with Spotify... Duh!
@Mr w00t Wise decision.
@Mr w00t
Should have jailbroken and downloaded the backgrounder program from Cydia.
@DoctarPeppar Yeah I heard about jailbreaking but isnt that illegal? Or damages the warranty somehow? Also, if I can get a phone that does what I need without the added effort of jail breaking I want to compensate the company for that...
N900 isnt perfect (I want my Ovi Maps updated) but its the best phone that I have ever used since iPhone...
@DoctarPeppar Sony Ericsson wasn't the point. It was S^3, or if I stoop to your level, shitbian.
@Mr w00t
The X6 is a nice enough phone and a really, really good music player. CWM makes it excellent value if you download a lot. Personally I'd wait for the N8 now it's been announced though.
That said, if she wants an X6 and isn't bothered about CWM then get a 16GB off eBay - I got mine for £200 with no strings attached. The package included a bluetooth headphone adapter and a £20 voucher for CWM.
Looks like Nokia and Microsoft liked the idea of BlackBerry Messenger....
Stevenk,
Not sure what you mean.. There's been a Microsoft Communicator mobile client available way back for Windows Mobile 2003 SE. Also there has been a Java client out for a bunch of Nokia java based phones and the Motorola V3xx phones for a little while too.
There are a few iPhone apps that let you access your corporate IM if you have a communicator web access server. Not sure if there is an Android client yet..
If anything they are trying to be the opposite of RIM... to use BBM you have to have a lame Blackberry.
BOSS: Where are you guys?
Lol. Symbian is open-source. It would be like stealing ice cream on free ice cream day.
If they made it for only two devices and only for enterprise users..... they blew it, big time.
@Plazmic Flame
no wai... there's no stylus! They can only blow it if it has a stylus!
Hey Microsoft, how about an official Live Messenger client? There's a million likely downloads right there. Hell, charge a couple bucks for it and it'd be fair if it was solid. I haven't got anything against Slick, per se, but you could easily do a lot better.
@inept
if you need Live Mail support, sign up and use the free Nokia Messaging PUSH email service. And there are many MSN clients for chat. Nimbuzz, Slick, Palringo, and Fring are all popular. Why does MS need to make an OFFICIAL client?
@christexaport
I clearly indicated that I want an official Live Messenger, not push e-mail. I also implied that I was using Slick, so if that wasn't clear: I'm using Slick. Slick is the best of a pretty crappy selection of MSN clients. It's lightweight and serves one simple purpose without all sorts of crazy clutter, but it's also flaky. It loses connection, it constantly needs upgrades, it's always asking you to accept some wacky certificate.
Microsoft should just make this extremely popular app available in a robust form that brings the desktop look and feel to the S60 platform. There was, at some point, an actual MS client available in China or something but no more. Bring it back!
@ Chris Ziegler,
Microsoft has already made it known that Eseries devices will ship with Microsoft Office for Mobiles soon, maybe as part of the S^4 launch. Just connecting imaginary dots, but its not a question of if, but when.
BTW, this isn't a "newfound" friendship. This pact was long in the works, and was officially announced nearly a year ago.

...just saying. :P
I realize that the E72 was a replacement for the E71. However, the E71 is still for sale AND backward compatibility is something that enterprise demands.
Stop making "winners" and "losers" out of your customers, Nokia! This practice will not end well, and I am sure that Microsoft would hate to see you fail.
