Sprint cans Nexus One in favor of EVO 4G
In light of Verizon's recent decision (or was that Google's decision?) to say goodnight to the Nexus One in favor of the Droid Incredible, we thought it might be wise to reach out to Sprint and get a comment on its own version -- the EVO 4G is just around the corner, of course, and it's lying in wait to cast a long, long shadow over any other Android device in Sprint's lineup. Sure enough, the carrier says that it's now taking a pass on Google's first "superphone," seeing how the EVO 4G is basically better in every respect: WiMAX support, larger screen, better camera, and so on. Of course, this might peeve a few folks who'd prefer stock Android over HTC's Sense UI -- if for no other reason than the fact that Sense-powered devices tend to have wildly longer firmware upgrade lag times than stock ones do -- but otherwise, the move seems to be a perfectly logical one. Oh, and as for that EVO? No update on a launch window, but Sprint says that it's still targeting Summer, thank goodness.

Nexus... none?
@ECH
Gadgets are dying left and right..
Medic!!
@ECH
Wow, smartphones are starting to have ever shorter life spans here! Even if the phone exists and sells, sometimes no more OS updates, sometimes carriers discarding it, sometimes the seller itself recommending another phone (as with incredible). Insane!
@ECH
I wouldn't be surprised t-mobile ditches it... for the mytouch slide(which is actually slower). I guess its based on software improvements not hardware but we'll see.
@SolidSnake Oh this is not dead by a long shot buddy. I just bought two and its got Googles backing along with Android OS which is second best now.
Nexus... Pun? Oh, I get it :)
@SolidSnake chromeOS devices?
@Bijaz
Nexus... Shunned?
Wow! This is Nexus.... Fun!
@ECH
Google did not intend for the Nexus One to be a phone for the masses or to compete with other Android devices. If they wanted to compete, they would not have given their OS for free or allowed other companies to have the latest version. They would have sold their phones in physical stores and made sure they were the best. No, instead the Nexus One was made as a proof of concept--to show the world what could be done with the Android OS (which doesn't technically even belong to Google)--and to act as a standard reference point, so that every phone will be compared with the Nexus one just as every phone used to be compared to the iPhone. Google wants its "Google experience" to becomes the norm...just keep using Google services on your phone and the free Google goodies will keep on comin'. In the meantime Google's partners will pay for the ad space in our hands.
@ECH
I just bought one not two months ago and now it's obsolete. Though I don't blame the carriers one bit for going with something better. I've been pretty disappointed in the N1.
the king is dead long live the king!
@Twoleaf
How can you say "long live the king" after you've just proclaimed that he is dead?
@joe23521
That's absurd. There are newer and better phones coming out, but is by *no means* "obsolete".
It is still very much competitive with other phones, and is in my opinion the best phone I have ever owned. I've had smartphones for years, and they've all had major shortcomings. This is the first smartphone I've had that continually runs rock solid reliably, and provides me with an excellent user experience.
I love my Nexus One.
-Taylor
@who said what
lololol... yep. and folks are throwing hissy-fits that the pre/pre plus is still putting out (at&t this month) like paris hilton. that's what i call shelf life.
@ECH
Wonder which phone will get canned Next. Us? Oh, ok.
I think we're Nexus done with the Nexus puns.
The Nexux One is NOT DEAD! It is still very well alive as a GSM cellphone!
@KennyB123 HTC Evo is the King and we all know it. Long live the King
@Taylor Yes Taylor
I was exaggerating a bit. I like the phone in general, but there are a handful of small things that bother to no end...miscalibrated soft buttons, video camera flickers, random touch screen bugs, bad signals, etc. These kinds of minor issues completely ruin for me an otherwise good experience.
@ECH : You know what this means folks? Sprint is gonna rape us on the EVO 4G price. They know we want it bad. Just you wait and see. :|
@joe23521 just to let you know it is still a very capable phone that trumps 70% of other phones.. My enV touch just cursed me out
@Taylor Yes Taylor Exactly my thoughts as well!
My Nexus One is Powerful and has NEVER let me down.
@KennyB123 It's a famous saying, look it up
@ECH
You know, the Sense UI can actually be turned off...
@KennyB123
A successor... to the professor? er... in this case, the king.
@ECH
how is this news, noone bought the nexus one except delusional google fanboys who need to tell themselves android is better than iphone when it isnt. "but zomg its getting better!!!" yea and the most downloaded android app is a task manager that looks designed in 1980, lmao
@rockanon I believe the smartest move google should d now is make a N1 refresh..update the nexus one sensor to the one in the incredible to fix touch screen issues...update the camera to 8mp and replace the trackball with an optical one. They should also make a sprint N1 thats wiMax..theres no reason why sprint should reject the N1 if this happens
@Kanga
True. The Nexus One is for people to order ONLINE, not buy off a store. I -for one- am waiting for the enterprise Nexus One... I just hope it comes with a front cam....
@ECH WOAHMG YOURE SO FUCKING FUNNY.
@joe23521 How is the nexus one obsolete?? Incredible is virtually the same phone with a slightly better camera, HD2 virtually the same phone with a different OS and bigger screen, Droid, iPhone, and Pre all have slower processors... The Nexus One is top of the line and will continue to be for a few months at least...
@ECH
.. looks like the nex - is - done
and yes, another nexus pun
@DK198 dude you just killed all the nexus fun....
Sounds like HTC got lazy and doesn't want to bother manufacturing a CDMA-based Nexus One.
Which is a shame, because all of HTC;'s other phones have that Sense crap on it. The only "Google Experience" phones you can now get are the original HTC Dream (G1), Motorola Milestone (Droid) and Nexus One. All of which are outdated now, and only one has Android OS 2.1 (and likely 2.2).
@ECH Well, every superphones has its own limit and just like the 4G it will have as well. So my take is, lets just savor the moment while it last! http://bit.ly/evo-4g-comparisson-superphone
Wonder what all these cancelled Nexus One launches mean for the future of the Nexus Two?
@ECH
I would say a few months from now when things like 1GHz Snapdragon, 8MP camera, and (hot new feature only found in a few phones right now) are all commonplace, Google will release the Nexus Two that eclipses those specs to put them back on the 'do want' map.
@ECH
It means the Nexus One did it's job perfectly in bringing Android to the world and expanding the horizons. Now the others take over and Google are, ultimately, the winners here. Don't despair!
@Mr Blue
Will the do the same staggered launches on mulitple carriers which have ultimately ended in cancellations, or will they all their ducks in a row at the initially release?
@ECH
The next google branded smartphone will come out quarter 1 2011, it will be called "google^2" and made by Sony Erickson.
They are going to try to make a yearly flagship device to avoid cannibalizing their google branded smartphone line, but will allow other device manufacturers to utilize Android OS nonetheless just not under the google^(#) product name. They are going to try to separate the google^(#) phone name from the other android phones and release a new one yearly similar to Apple's product release cycle but in Q1 each year. To beat Apple to the punch I suppose and to create a brand name worthy of months of speculation and free press every year.
Please quote me on this. Honestly I was told this from someone inside the business. ( I know you all have heard that before, but just take note if nothing else)
-Peace out chaps
@uck
Though Moto was on deck for Google's next phone not Sony... Sanjay was sitting there during the N1 launch.
@ECH
Yeah I thought so too. What I was told was that sony erickson nabbed the spot from moto recently.
The rest is just speculation from me: I think moto was still timid to help google make another google branded feature phone and sony erickson just needed something good to go their way and took the opportunity.
@ECH There was no G2 so how can we expect a Nexus Two?
@jonshipman
Google has always said beginning at the launch of the N1 that there would be more "Google Phones" than just the N1... that the N1 was just the beginning and that there would be a series of phones.
Do these cancellations changes those plans??? probably not, but who knows?
@jonshipman G2=HERO
Can I just give them my credit card now or how does that work?
@Sweet Dude
I'll pass it along to them...just send it my way. *wink*
Nexus...Done.
forget all this android nonesense. i want a new webos device!! the pre is looking a bit long in the tooth. (i am so gonna get flamed for this)
@onemadrssn
Maybe, for being off-topic, but I agree. New webOS device!
@onemadrssn
I know what you mean. I really really want a WebOS device, but I can't justify getting a pre now with the EVO coming out in a month or so.
