O2's UK network hung up, just like the Parliament -- were you affected? (Updated with O2's response)
So word has it that O2's network's been a bit dodgy in some parts of the UK this evening. Did Gordon Brown's resignation cause such an outage? Did all the texts about David Cameron's shiny forehead lead to this network overload? We don't know, but our own phone's been running just fine all evening in Central London. Anyhow, let us know if you were affected -- just don't say it was Nick Clegg's fault.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
Update: O2's released a statement about the regional outage:
"We currently have a fault on our network which is affecting voice and data service across parts of the Midlands, South West and Northern Ireland. We are very sorry for the inconvenience. Our engineers are on site to fix the fault as soon as possible."This certainly matches what we're seeing on Elliott Kember's crowdsourced map, too. [Thanks, danWebb and Scump]
| Yep, couldn't dial out or get on the web with my O2 phone. | |
|---|---|
| I'm not on O2, but my network's been down as well. | |
| Nope, O2's been fine for me. | |
| Nope, I'm on another network and have had no problems today. | |
| No idea -- been too busy listening to repeats of poor Gordon Brown's departure speech. | |
| I'm not in the UK, but I love my Brits. |

Wow an even tie with one vote in each category.
@insky And shouldn't they be using the Alternative Vote for that poll? :-)
@insky
Similar to last Thursday's results?
@insky
No O2 in Cornwall )-:
@insky
i love my brits
@insky
At last, a voting system with Proportional Representation.
(I say "at last", I'm actually dead against PR, but I couldn't resist commenting :P)
@FORDY I know I shouldn't take the bait but what's wrong with PR? Nothing, that's what. There will be a referendum on it now. I will vote in favor of it.
Back on topic, I'm on o2 and it's been fine all day.
@David Bailey Proportional Representation will give the BNP a seat in parliament. Unless you're a fascist racist, this can only be a bad thing for Britain. That's what's wrong with PR.
@insky
Since the last option doesn't count, because they're not Brits, those next close is the first option, the "Yeps", if you will.
However, they're 21 votes short of a majority, so they must form a coalition with one of the other options to fix this "hung" internet poll.
(I'm not even British.)
@fingers But if people vote for them, you can't just ignore the vote. That's completely undemocratic. It's up to people and the government to dissuade people from voting BNP, not persisting with this completely absurd system we have now, that disproportionately favors the Tories and Labour.
@fingers We can only hope that if they (the BNP) get a seat from PR that they will be so widely disdained to prevent them from attaining a seat again. Sadly I don't think this will happen, which is why i'd prefer a single transferable vote, more democratic than First Past the Post but not PR
@fingers The Liberal Democrats got 25% of the vote but only have 10% of the seats (and presence) in Parliament. That is just wrong. Completely wrong and undemocratic.
Not O2 in Devon last night. :)
@Jimbob
Vodafones better anyway :)
HA!
Political humor WIN!
But Nick Clegg was responsible.
@foxh8er2 No he wasn't bloody Sue was...
@d0mth0ma5, I was responsible!
@d0mth0ma5
Yea wtf she screwed us over.
@Lady Vader My apologies Sue.
fwiw, i'm in bristol.
@cassio
and i should add that my phone's stopped working for a few hours.
@cassio
I'm in Bristol too. Incoming calls get an incredibly unhelpful 'sorry, there is a fault'. Phone basically hangs if I try to make outgoing calls. O2 friends in London seem unaffected. Glad to hear it's the network's fault and not my much-abused N95 8GB packing up.
Not sure if it's related, but I think I was basically unconscious between 21:00 and 22:30. Very strange. Despite considerable straining I can't find a way to pin the blame on Cameron's massive face. Anyone else experience consciousness outages around that time?
@cassio i say stopped - i mean it's STILL not working properly
god i really need some sleep
@cassio
Diagnosis: WESTCOUNTRY MELTDOWN.
@jgpuff
Yeah mine has been dead for about 5 hours in Cornwall
@Jimbob Mine was down all evening (Glos)
O2 has been screwed since post 7 GMT.
Live in Gloucester England if anyone cares :)
But...but...I don't love my Brits!
:-P
@Prevacator
Boo!!
Man I love you yanks ;)
@FORDY
Get a room guys :/
Was fine in London, but my Dad's phone in Cheltenham was affected.
They have failed me for the last time
(Force throws iPhone)
(Force Pulls it back) Releasing it was me that took O2 down.
@Lord Vader you bastard!
@cassio Just because he never knew his Father doesn't make him a bastard!
@d0mth0ma5. But you are mistaken, Commander. I didn't have a Father. I was born from the mediclorians, which is even worse
@Cassio Thank for them kind words of praise, I love seeing slaves in pain
@Lord Vader My mistake my Lord, I must have blocked out the source from which that information was derived from.
@Lord Vader my pleasure my lord
Bristol here, o2 down for me too
My O2 and Vodafone networks were ok. But my HD2 has been broken all evening
LOL I love how Richard Lai has also noticed David Cameron's ridiculously shiny forehead XD
@benjybaruch Its sort of hard not to notice, you need sunglasses to look at a photo of him, god knows how journalists manage to resist the allmighty shiny head in the flesh
@Itchster The majority of the press is Conservative leaning, now we know why. "ooh, look at the shiny shiny" (to channel Frankie Boyle)
Look's like O2 is all...
(sunglasses)
...WASHED UP
Orange was down in Oxford for an hour or so.
Mine died out around 7:30 'til around 9:00. GSM seems to be screwed, since I was able to browse on 3g perfectly fine.
Woo Cameron!
@Alex Woo Cameron...lets just wait for him to do rubbish then (picks up his pitchfork) >:D
@Zibang Woo Conservative fiscal sense with a Liberal Democrat soul
@d0mth0ma5
Wooo for another election when they remember coalitions NEVER work :(
