Lenovo's 15.6-inch IdeaPad Y560 laptop goes on sale
Slowly but surely, each of Lenovo's CES introductions are popping up for sale. With nary a moment to spare, the 15.6-inch IdeaPad Y560 has finally surfaced at the company's website, offering up Core i3, i5 and i7 options, up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM, ATI's 1GB Mobility Radeon HD 5730 GPU, Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) and a 1,366 x 768 native resolution panel. Plenty of options are tweakable should you not find the base configurations suitable for your needs, but you'll be hard pressed to secure one for under $949. Well, unless you've got the patience of Job.

You had me up until 1366x768. Urgh, on a 15.6" panel that is just too low.
@voodoo yea the specs where sweet until they got to that screen resolution but on the other side do you really need it.
@TheOne I'm all for run on sentences making a point in a funny manner and lacking some much needed commas but no really we do need it yes.
@voodoo
Does Lenovo offer any thing with 1920 resolution? Serious question.
@voodoo
!!! Are you kidding me? I was trying a Dell Studio 1557 at 1920x1080 and it was a pain in the a$$ to read the letters on the screen menus etc... I had to make Win7 fonts bigger because lowering the resolution made everything blurry. Also, many programs are not designed for such a high resolution and they remain small...ULTRA small!! So, why you believe that its a low resolution?
@Bobot
With a high-resolution screen, you have the option of increasing DPI in Win7 control panel to make stuff bigger, and you STILL have the benefits of the high-res screen.
Whereas if you have a low-res panel, thats it, you're stuck with it. I have used a 15.6" 1366x768 and I find it too low. Its like a throwback to the 90s.
@voodoo My 13" laptop has that screen resolution..
Laptopwise, 1366x768 is fine for a 13.3" inch screen. Hell, it's even OK for a 14" screen (though personally I'd prefer 1280x800, but that's me). But any screen with a diagonal larger than 15" really ought not be rocking anything less than 900 vertical pixels. A 1600x900 screen at 15.6" has virtually the same size pixels as a 1366x768 screen at 13.3". And it's not like it's going to be significantly more expensive. Laptop makers need to get a clue about this.
@Bobot: I'm sorry, that's called user-error.
Does it have a task manager? They blew it
@Bskballa92
that joke is getting quite old
@FnuGk just this one more time :D it was pretty funny..
@FnuGk
Seriously, those jokes are becoming a bag of hurt.
I'm looking to buy a new laptop and I thought this would be a good deal since it has ATI 5730, good amount of RAM and nice processor. So I go to lenovo Canada looking to upgrade the CPU and there's no other options apart from upgrading your warranty and external storage. I'm like WTF? And yeah the screen should be 1080p. So now I have to look around for a better one or just wait for HP Envy 17 or the new Envy 15 or something. Grrr!
Got mine last night. Nice keyboard, extremely wide screen. I liked the glitter mixed into the case. It is a little thinner than I would have expected, but feels solid. The touch pad and keys are fingerprint magnets. Just wish there wasn't so much crapware installed by default. Setting up the face recognition software was beyond my meager skills so I uninstalled it as well.
Oh, and I got mine for under $900 with an I5 and 4GB RAM.
Overall, much better than the bottom of the line HP it is replacing.
@chunt42
Yeah I bought the 2009 model (tweaked-up significantly) last November. It's a great machine once you get rid of all the crapware. I can't really comment on it as a "laptop" since it's basically just been docked on my desk for the past 6 months (hooked to a 23" 1080p). I think I've cycled the battery like 10 times total (is that bad?). But as a computer that can be portable if need be, it's awesome.
PS. That face recognition nonsense is stupid, and it obviously only works if your laptop is open (i.e. not docked). You aren't missing anything.
wow I'm loving everything this company is doing right now... but more importantly where is my Oms? the evo is cool and all but i want an Oms
This is one area where Apple are way more honest: Screen resolution. All those flashy looking Dell, HP, Toshiba et al laptops in PC World, Currys etc (UK) may have large screens, but they are in fact of lower resolution than Apple's 13" MacBook Pro. Of course, one pays a premium for Apple, but what is the point of a large screen that is low res? Mobile phones with 3.5" and 4" screens feature 800 x 640 (approx) res, so 15" laptops should be full HD as standard now. (1920 x 1080).
The patience of Steve Job?
@Bandigolo Yeah Steve Job i(dea)pad
@furquanatique
so its a iDEA pad?
Engadget, beat down ASUS' goddamn door until I get the eee PC release dates I was promised today.
@Luke Yeah I just emailed Don Melanson, who posted the article about the May 13th release dates. I'm hoping for some follow up news.
I'm primed for a new netbook.
@cray
Thanks man. Seriously, ASUS, enough is enough. Put some shit on the street.
I'm quite pleased with its Y550 predecessor. Runs cooler than any laptop I've owned despite the rather good specs. Resolution could be better, but I frankly wouldn't want anything higher than 1440x900 on a 15" screen. Any larger and it's strain. Despite that, I was happy to get the kind of impressive internal hardware for that price if I had to sacrifice the screen resolution.
Huh, wtf, these laptops have been on sale since the beginning of April. Plenty of people have already ordered, received, and reviewed them. You've been too busy covering all the apple stuff to pay any attention.
Lenovo. Boring ugly crap hardware at low low Chinese prison labor prices.
@SlappySquirrel
Boring ugly crap hardware? Me thinks you are a troll. i7s and 5xxx mobile radeon cards are not crap hardware.
My Y460 came in yesterday (14 inch model). A Core i5 processor 4GB RAM, 500GB HD, and a 1GB ATI 5650 for under $900 was the ticket for me. I was going to get the Y560 until I saw the screen resolution was the same as the 14" model.
I don't want to rain on anyones parade, but I got this lappy about a month ago. It was all right, but I ended up returning it. I knew that it would put out a lot of hot air because of the quad core processor, but MAN! it was hot. I didn't like it. And the first comment is right about the screen resolution. It was a smudge magnet too. So that sucked. I think I'm just going to wait for the 14 inch Envy.
needs better resolution.
@Oflife I'm a little confused by your comment. According to the apple website the 13 inch Macbook Pro only has a resolution of 1280x800 and the 15 inch has a 1440x900 with an option for 1680x1050. The Dell Studio XPS 16 (15.6 inch screen) has a resolution of 1920x1080. They also have a 13.3 inch Latitude with a 1366x768 resolution. So its in similar range to the mac screen. I will agree that the HP and Toshiba laptops had lower resolution though.
Hope it doesnt have the thermal/ shutdown issues of the Y650.
I found the Y560 i7 Sale 16% here.
I just purchased the top-of-the-line Lenovo Y560 model 06462BU primarily because of the RapidDrive and switchable graphics technology advertised for this model on the Lenovo website. After starting it up for the first time yesterday, I eagerly looked for these two features, and found that neither was included.
I have saved pdfs of all the webpages that would lead any reasonable person to conclude that this machine came with these two features.
I am going to try to get my money back as soon as the "don't work weekends" sales support people get back in the office.
