Sony's entry-level A290 DSLR smiles for the camera
Sony hasn't seen fit to fully announce the successor to its current entry-level Alpha model, the A230, but Tinhte forum member dt0306 has posted what looks to be conclusive proof of its existence -- not to mention shots at every angle and detailed specs. This re-designed model now packs a 14 megapixel CCD with a BIONZ image processor, along with the same maximum 3200 ISO, 2.7-inch LCD, and 2.5fps maximum shooting speed of the A230. Storage is handled by Memory Stick or SDHC, and there's even a price mentioned: 9,990,000 VND, or about $530 including the 18 - 55mm lens that the A230 comes mated to. There's no telling what the domestic MSRP will really be whenever this kit releases here, but we're not sure that a couple of extra megapixels and a new body warrants much of a premium.

No hotshoe for that four reticle awesome posted earlier. ;(
@PandaLand
first man to successfully decode this get High Rank
@PandaLand I'm pretty sure that's a hotshoe right there... albeit covered as they normally are...
who'se ever heard of a dslr without a hotshoe? that's like preventing consumers from buying your expensive flash units
@Vylen
That's what the Sony hotshoe looks like, uncovered. :)
Good to see Sony has a clear direction for the cameras (simple interface) but I hope they have a direction towards video integration for the higher-end models. I'm also pretty excited for that e-mount HD camcorder.
@PandaLand Not to mention the extremely generous space for the a290 name
No video recording?
Cut your nails.. gross.
@html5FLOP That's the first thing I saw and though!
@html5FLOP You never know, it could be chick with a very manly hand!
Finally a new Sony with Mirrors! Who would want that Nex3/5 junk? No mirrors, no sale. I don't understand the whole M4/3 and similar trend.
If you decide to bash me please use Their, They're & There correctly.
@Jamesky so how'd you cancel momentum from heavy flip-up mirrors?
@Jamesky
Different strokes for different folks.
Personally I see these mirrorless bodies as a complement to my dSLR. Something I can discreetly fit in my coat pocket with the right lens, or as a lightweight backup to my main kit.
@Jamesky
Also tell everyone about how nothing will ever surpass the VHS, and how the crackling and popping on records has a special meaning in your heart.
I don't know how you could have manged to sound any more "old-farty" than that...
Wow, another entry level Sony DSLR.
What is it with sony and diluting their products excessively
More guys with long nasty fingernails?? WTF?!
Hopefully someone that knows more about photography can tell me but is this a good camera and good in the sense that it'd be worth $530. Just curious.
@nickux it's a reasonable price for an entry level (sony) dslr.... there's no telling if it actually would be "worth" it without proper testing or a review... cause one needs to see the image quality of photos it produces - however if previous sony alpha's are any indication, they should be "ok"...
as with most entry level dslrs, this one has fewer buttons compared to its bigger brothers, which usually means more menu navigation and sorting but you get used to that over time...
long story short - yea, worth it if its going to be your first foray into the world of dslr's...
but as the article said, probably not if you're "upgrading" from previous entry level models...
@Vylen ok thanks. Yeah a review is needed to be sure. I'm just curious considering I'd be upgrading from a very crappy p&s. I want good photos but I'm not into photography enough to warrant a high-priced DSLR.
Why are there so many leaks from Vietnam, of all places, lately?
@tkkg cause its one of the places where electronics like dslr's are manufactured...
What's the deal with Asian men and inordinately long fingernails?
The unused realestate on top of the camera looks DISGUSTING... I can't believe Sony would design such a monstrosity... It's just a big hunk of solid plastic, with NOTHING on it....
