Wi-Fi Sync app rejected by Apple, headed to Cydia for $9.99
Can't say we're surprised to hear that Apple rejected Greg Hughes' Wi-Fi Sync app. You know, the app that allows you to wirelessly sync your iPhone / iPod touch with iTunes without having to USB tether to your computer. Messing with Apple's synchronization technology is a pretty big no-no as demonstrated by Palm's webOS bluff. Here's the rejection as explained by Greg from an unnamed Apple rep over the phone:
Update: An Apple spokeswoman contacted us to clarify that the rejection was the result of security issues and "technical issues including reading and writing outside of the app's container." So there.
So while you won't find it in Apple's App Store, it's available now on Cydia for a cool $9.99. You have jailbroken your device haven't you? Don't make us get all MuscleNerd up in here."While he agreed that the app doesn't technically break the rules, he said that it does encroach upon the boundaries of what they can and cannot allow on their store. He also cited security concerns."
Update: An Apple spokeswoman contacted us to clarify that the rejection was the result of security issues and "technical issues including reading and writing outside of the app's container." So there.

First person that calls apple care and says to me your syncing is ****ed up im going to laugh.
@Justin Bieber 3
I should go on to say that I am sure it is awesome to wirelessly sync, I mean don't call if you screw it up.
@Justin Bieber 3 Asking people to pay for thing through cydia is dumb. Selling things to crackers and hackers does not work too well. Sucks it got rejected though!
@Justin Bieber 3
this is a lame "app"
@werty1432k Jailbreaking doesn't necessarily mean cracking and hacking. Some features like multitasking and SBSettings are used to enhance the OS and can only be gotten after jailbreaking.
@Justin Bieber 3
If Apple ever becomes as big as Microsoft, technological growth will come to a screeching halt. Pathetic.
@Justin Bieber 3
Apple is just jealous that someone came up with that app before they did.
@Justin Bieber 3 if someone else has to do it for you you blew it
@UrAwFuL
Actually, I bet Apple has had this for a long time. They just have to wait for a newer version of iPhone OS to be released so they can call it "the shitz".
@MrAffrox
Jailbreaking; also known as hacking
@suicidebob Also known as unchaining yourself.
@Raul7 Yep.
@suicidebob
Correction:Jailbreaking; also known as hacking... by ignorant people.
Anyway, syncing with your PC/mac from anywhere in the world (I assume it will be possible to do this over 3g as well) is going to be awesome. Hopefully there'll be a way to choose what to sync (easier than firing up vnc).
@MrAffrox Oh apple why does it have to be the good apps that are always rejected.. and you accept this app, just because the developer made a viral video over you? http://j.mp/ifart-app-rejected-why
@werty1432k I buy stuff on Cydia all the time. Not everyone with a jailbroken iPhone is a dbag who thinks they shouldn't have to pay for anything.
@Justin Bieber 3 You're going to get downranked.. just for having Justin Beiber as your name.
Bayybeee bayyybee baybbeee ooo..... BOOM HEADSHOT.
@Raul7
I think so, nmap your phone, theres an open port for it!
@futurerheza
Man! You hit the nail on the head with your comment!
@sshole Do it, do it!
@ssgadget
And this is why Android will win. You're always a little checkbox away from installing any non-Market app you wish. Because you're an adult. And you paid for the device. Oh, who am I kidding? Like Google would reject this from their Market.
@mth785 Yep! FirewallIP, MyWi are two I use all the time. I won't update to os4 until these are working on it.
@futurerheza There's also the fact that it probably won't be that fast though. A direct connection is fine but over wifi, transfers take 10x longer than wired USB.
The security issue is also valid. I don't want to have apps running in the background when OS 4 hits and be on a public wifi connection and that app allowing wifi access to the contents of my device through some security flaw.
That said, Apple should have foreseen this and made a rule to cover it.
apple = open source profits! Apple is kind of treating their OS as an open source project, that they place in a jewel encrusted bubble. Let the enthusiasts develop innovations for the system and encourage them to turn the work into you for 'review' in order to achieve rich and fame in the app store. Then you reject the app for whatever reason you want, keep the code, make minor changes, and release your NEW and IMPROVED OS.
@MrAffrox
Whoohoo!!! I rather Have Saurik get the money then Apple!!!
I'm definitely buying this!!!
@TinWard
ya, i can understand your concerns about people accessing your phone, as you probably have missile codes and thousands of credit card numbers just listed there. Honestly, what do you have on your phone that's so valuable? Phones are so easy to lose, why keep such important information on it?
@LeJay I haven't looked at it, but wouldn't it work similar to any other wireless sync out there? As in, you have to be on the same network as your computer to use it?
This sucks for that guy, though. Apple should have just bought his thing outright, polished it, and integrated it with the OS.
@SpongeBobPistolPants Apple doesn't get the code when you submit. They only get the binary app package.
@mth785 well why should you not pay for the appstore apps then who are people that have played by the rules and invested alot of money into their apps ??
People like this know there getting to get their appcracked. Even if the prick says "it knows"...someone shud tell him stfu mate ..its getting cracked
@sshole Laughs to himself...
@ssgadget That wasn't a good one, you simple minded moron. That's the same joke being told when Apple doesn't allow something, over and over and over again. Shit's really old.
@EdwardCullen Most of my apps are purchased from the AppStore but there are apps that aren't in AppStore so I buy them on Cydia or Rock. I have no interest in cracked apps.
Like it ever had a real shot at getting in anyway.
If it functions perfectly it looks like it would be worth the cost for a jailbreaker, I'll say that much.
@Booksmart Devil What cost? Spirit doesnt cost you a cent.
@Macaon
I think he is referring to the 9.99 it will cost.
@Booksmart Devil
It's all good though. I'll just wait till it comes to cydia and some repo cracks it. And all will be good in the world. I'm not paying $9.99 for that.
@Booksmart Devil if someone else has to do it for you you blew it
Booo... how sick would it be to set up your iDevice to automatically sinc at midnight, or something (including download any updates to your AppStore Apps or Software Updates).. Come on Apple... put it in OS4
@Wesscoast
And call it REVOLUTIONARY AND MAGICAL and take all the credit from the main stream media even though an indie dev did it first.
I don't know if I want wireless sync THAT MUCH...$10 is a pretty hefty price for ANY APP...unless you are using an iPad...
@kapanak
Very true, but I'm guessing the developer wants to cover his loss because Cydia doesn't have as big a reach as the iTunes Store...
@kapanak I have a really hard time shelling out money for a program that requires you to Jailbreak the phone. Mostly because the future of Jailbreaking is uncertain, so you don't know if you're throwing your $10 away mere months before the release of OS 4.0.
@kevlar 4.0 has already been cracked.
@kevlar
What three years of jailbreaking isn't certain enough for you? Its not going away man, that IS certain.
@kapanak I bought it, and up to now I have no regrets. It works as advertised its not super fast, but also not slow. I am currently running a backup, installing some apps from iTunes on computer, and a HD podcast. I shall report on my findings soon(i hope).
$10 is a lot for an app? Are you serious? This guy has probably spent a long time working on this. This kind of 'i want everything for nothing' attitude really pisses me off. I bet you computer and phone is full of stolen software isn't it?
@wilvo
And I bet your computer is full of expensive software that you don't really have a use for...actually, I don't but that is what you are suggesting his phone should be like
@wilvo
$10 is a hefty price for an app that I have to jailbreak for and not even sure how well it works. I'm sure it's many factors that come
into play when syncing. Wi-Fi speed, and the amount of data that needs to be synced just to name a few.
Plus. It's not something that you can bank on always being able to use. You're constantly hoping, praying, and wishing that a dev jailbreaks the next OS version to use it.
$2 - $5 dollars at max. But not $10.
This is pretty cool, I wonder how complicated it would be to set this one up...
Dammit
The wrong form of "you're" is used in the end of the article. Should be your not you're.
