iPhone OS 4.0 beta 4 includes AT&T tethering option
See that screen there? That's from the minty fresh beta 4 of iPhone OS 4.0, which was just released to developers moments ago. Unless our eyes are badly mistaken, that's an option to setup internet tethering on AT&T, something that WWAN warriors have been waiting for since... oh, forever. We're downloading the new build as we speak, and we'll let you know if we find anything out. Oh, and don't get your hopes up too high -- AT&T proclaimed that it was "still waiting on better network performance" before enabling iPhone tethering just three weeks ago.
Update: There's a video of the screens after the break, just in case your belief was temporarily suspended for any reason. Thanks, Jerish!
Update 2: Well, this is interesting -- we just updated an iPhone 3GS in Chicago, and we're not seeing the tethering option. We're guessing this is a glitch or just a mismatched carrier setting file, since so many others are seeing it, but we'll do some digging and see what's up.
Update 3: Okay, we've got it sorted -- all it took was a quick network settings reset. Thanks, Gray!
[Thanks, Pete]
See more video at our hub!

Sweet..but I hope that AT&T is truly ready for it. And I pray that it will be free.
If not then I won't use it. Still though its nice to have it as an option.
@TheLondonExchange Pray harder. Much much much much x10048149
Harder.
@Teslanaut
Lol I can only do so much praying.
Is teethering on android on verizon free? Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think it is...
I'm genuinely asking though.
@TheLondonExchange Tethering is an extra $30 a month. Yes, AT&T really wants you to pay $60/month for unlimited data with tethering. The good news is that you can already tether for free with a jailbroken iPhone by installing a hacked carrier profile - very easy. Just don't abuse it, and I don't think it'll raise any red flags.
@TheLondonExchange
If you have a rooted droid, yes but there are hundreds of tethering apps in the market that work just as well. I've been using it for awhile and no one has called or sent me a nasty email, yet anyway.
2.2 is supposed to have tethering integrated. Now, whether or not Verizon will allow its use is another thing.
@greatcaffeine
You're full of crap.
@ PBB
key word being "rooted". I don't want to nor should I HAVE to root my device to get that feature. If its there its there. If its not then I'm not going to bother myself and void the warranty to get that small insignificant feature.
More importantly is there OFFICIAL teethering from Verizon? And if so how much is it?
A simple question deserves a simple answer....
@TheLondonExchange
att charges $60 bucks for data with tethering but I hear from some att rep that for iphone it could be $70 for data and tethering?
@TheLondonExchange
No, you just jailbreak. Ha. Froyo=tethering=tomorrow.
@TheLondonExchange
Oh boy.... There's the London Exchange we all know and hate...
@techee44
You android fanboys/Apple Haters honestly expect me to believe that it will be $70 a month for data and teethering?
IF it is then I won't be getting it. More importantly I think thats a fucking joke of a price. And I HOPE no one signs up for this service.
However I honestly think that you guys are making this up. I'll wait for OFFICIAL word from AT&T.
And more importantly what is Verizon charging for data and teethering together?
@TheLondonExchange tethering = turning your phone into mifi hotspot, so yeah, that's another feature from them you'd need to buy. Unless you have WebOS then its free with verizon. Also, there are numerous reasons to root and since you can root and unroot at will you don't really void your warranty forever. Also, you can overclock with root, but I digress its not about being rooted.
Also, yeah, I'd call it official tethering with root from verizon, if you use tether and they catch you they will officially charge you for the data ;)
@TheLondonExchange the incredible supports tethering for $30 a month. However, you can install pdanet for free or other apps and get tethering, without any modifications at all.
@TheLondonExchange A simple question does deserve a simple answer. The answer is, tethering is allowed by Verizon for an extra $30 a month.
Why does it say 'decrease battery life' at the top? Is this a special feature? WOW!
@TheLondonExchange
you could just jailbreak then download mywi and make your iPhone into a hotspot.
@Tenkiyohou
Thank You and I Fling Poo for giving me a STRAIGHT ANSWER.
@TheLondonExchange if your on sprint you cant do it for free ever since i updated as soon as i connect it to my computer i get the option i use it quite frequently now
@TheLondonExchange But yet you go to the trouble to post a comment and call someone "full of shit" for such an "small insignificant feature"?
AT&T will be charging 60/month for this "small insignificant feature"?
Engadget posted this and got over 100 comments within a few minutes for a "small insignificant feature"?
It would seem as though, you Sir, are full of shit today. And seemingly, insignificant.
@TheLondonExchange On the droid incredible you can usb tether without rooting it comes stock free on verizon
As someone else mentioned, tethering is free if you have a Pre Plus or Pixi Plus on Verizon.
It's quite nice.
@TheLondonExchange Jesus Christ, I'm already paying for unlimited data, what more would they want from me?? I'm only one person ladies and gentleman.
@Apple Google Microsoft
beta4 has a new option that will decrease your battery a lot faster
@TheLondonExchange
...I'm honestly wondering what you all are talking about? I've been able to do tethering for free directly out of the box. No rooting. HTC Hero on Sprint with a little PDANet free action.
What's the big deal about tethering? Any Android phone should be able to run PDANet.
@shockwave18
Just pay $9.99 for MyWi (a one time payment) on Cydia or Rock, jailbreak your phone and voila, you are set for life and screw all those blood suckers carriers.
@Apple Google Microsoft
That's right under the enable 3G option. Was already there
@Mike10010100
Yeah, pdanet or easy tether, no root necessary.
Wireless tethers are nice, and don't get me wrong I'll use them again, but I am not sharing the connection and either jailbroke iphone or rooted android battery doesn't last long with serious wifi tethering.
@TheLondonExchange I actually tether with my droid free download the app from the market it's free
@Jake Root So has any1 tried to tether with beta 4 yet? Like is the "open in webpage" functional and give u tethering? Some1 who has it?
@Apple Google Microsoft Umm... what you think using the wifi antenna AND 3G to transfer data between a phone and other devices wouldn't drain the battery, you gotta be delusional. iSerious about that.
F*** AT&T.
Just let us have tethering already.
@TheLondonExchange Yep, begs the question, why does ATT always have the good stuff? Anyway, hopefully there'll be a jailbreak for that. Opinions to iPhone OS. http://j.mp/os-4-0-by-iphone
@greatcaffeine
Or you could just get a phone with Windows Mobile, comes with its own tethering app called internet connection Sharing. I have used my Xperia X1i on AT&T to tether for months now. I have never heard a peep from AT&T. However with the news of tethering coming to Iphone, you can bet that every broke Iphone user trying to save money, will try to replace their DSL / Cable Modem with their Iphone tethered to their computer. Then of course they leave bit torrent running day and night, and bring AT&T's network to its knees. Today I took a proactive response, and moved my service to T-Mobile, and got and HD2. Hate to be on AT&T network when tethering hits the Iphone.
@TheLondonExchange
As long as a laptop card is $60 a month, tethering on a $30 smartphone data plan will cost you an extra $30 a month. If smartphone tethering was free, everyone with a laptop card would dump their $60 a month plan and sign up for a $30 a month smartphone plan and just tether.
I could see AT&T maybe dropping the tethering fee to $20 - $15 a month, to "reward" you for having both a voice plan and a data plan with them, since a laptop card does not require a voice plan. Tethering on Verizon is only $25 more I think, so it's $5 cheaper to tether than to have a laptop card with Verizon.
As others have said, get some 3rd party tethering software and just don't overuse it. A good rule of thumb is keep it below 5 GB or they might snoop your data to see if you're tethering to a PC.
@normanb20
So using PDAnet on Android, does it create a true wifi access point or do you have to connect via ad-hoc?
thanks
@logicbombde
I was tethering with my Nexus One on AT&T with PDAnet and it was working great. PDAnet isn't a WiFi tethering option, but it is a USB and bluetooth tethering option. I would stick with USB as bluetooth's speed is slow and you don't get good speeds on AT&T's 3G network. The best thing about PDAnet is that you don't have to root your phone. I've tried to install PDAnet on AT&T's Motorola Backflip phone and it won't work. AT&T has crippled that phone enough where it doesn't work.
@Mike10010100
The big deal is iPhone on AT&T = Fail up until now. While you and I have been enjoying free tethering for years with MANY older devices, Apple fanboys on AT&T never had a legitimate way. I say on AT&T because While I have Sprint, I also have an iPhone for traveling and I have an English prepaid simcard from 02 last year I got the simcard and it has the tethering option! Yes a Prepaid sim showed that option on my iPhone running 3.1
also while I was in england I had picture mail aswel. On 3.1 firmware. These small facts showed me instantly how crap AT&T really is lol. A yr later they released 3.1.2 for picture mail! Ha I had it already in England with a damn prepaid card! Now further down the line with 4.0 we get the Tethering haha this is why iPhone needs to be on another US carrier. I hope Verizon does end up getting a version and compete with crap AT&T perhaps then AT&T will be more on point with their slack network and crap plans.
@sommerchan
you can get it for free if you download the sinfuliphonerepo works great!!
It looks photoshoped
@SskyNnet it's not, i have beta 4 on my iPhone and its 100% legit
@Stevenk
In other news, Hell just froze over. The devil is serving ice cold beer...
@SolidSnake
Free? or is the Devil charging insane prices like Vancouver downtown clubs?
Anyways, I had been tethering on my iPhone for a long time...before I switched to Android, and continued tethering...still for free...
@SolidSnake
Oh, and I didn't jailbreak...it is free on Telus and Bell...they just treat it like regular bandwidth...and I know a lot of European carriers have it for free as well, some others charge extra but still have it available...in Korea, it is also free...
@SskyNnet you look photoshoped... check out the vid...
@kapanak Yup. I've got tethering with TELUS and my Milestone.
Have fun with an extra expensive data fee :)
@Technologeee Or have fun jailbreaking your iPhone and tethering for free!
This would be awesome... Except for the additional fees I know we'd get slapped with :(
So...Apple is catching up with the Jailbreak community now. Cool!
@viditbhargava
the stock iphone has been capable of tethering for the past year AT&T has just been blocking it.
@viditbhargava
Tethering on the iPhone has been available in just about every other country except US...AT&T is just being a giant...you know...
