Four more major laptop manufacturers will use NVIDIA Optimus by the fall
It's no secret that we've been big fans of NVIDIA's automatic graphics switching Optimus technology, but we've had one major complaint -- there's just not enough systems with it on the market. While ASUS has been employing the technology in most of its new systems, others, like Lenovo and HP, have been quite tight-lipped on the GPU tech. But apparently that's about to change. When we crossed paths with NVIDIA's Vice President of Worldwide Sales Rene Haas at the Netbook Summit, he revealed that at least four more major manufacturers will be using Optimus by the end of the summer. He wouldn't share any details on brands, but he did say that there should be a total of 50 Optimus lappies on the market by the fall. Of course, we don't know how many of those will be made by ASUS or will be Ion 2 netbooks, but it surely looks like the momentum is growing, and we're hoping to learn more at Computex next week. Fingers crossed that we can count the Alienware M11x among them.

Easier to find a Hackintoshable laptop= success!
@10nisman94
I love how this contradicts the first comment:
"...and this is why PCs will always be better. latest technology in them."
LOL
@BecauseItsNotGoogle
I agree, but it was just funny how the two comments contradicted each other...
Except they don't.
I like :)
Good stuff man, good stuff. :D
Optimus is pretty highly rated but I still feel like it's an underrated feature. It should be included in all laptops that use higher power GPUs.
@Broderbund
It is highly PRAISED, however, it is UNDERRATED. There...
@Broderbund
Corrections: It should be in ALL discrete GPU systems (excluding desktops of course).
Thanks grammar police. Am I free to go?
he was trying to be helpful by more clearly stating what it is you were trying to say. There are far snottier ways to have said that as well. Like ''that made no sense'' or ''Fail''.
@abedinthehouse Why not desktops? If people are just browsing web on their desktops couldn't they use some kind of integrated solution also? If all computers did this maybe we could cut electrical usage across the country... unless I am overlooking something obvious?
@himenohogosha
I remember reading something saying it makes it harder to make drivers, not sure though..
With Intel and AMD both pushing the idea of integrated GPUs in their CPUs, we'll probably have automatic switching for desktop in a few years.
@Lopez
lol so randumb xD
@BecauseItsNotGoogle
If you're trying to make a PC vs. Mac comparison, fine. Just know that the Macbook Pro (15'' and 17'') supports a very similar technology, and with third party tools like, gfxstatus, it's very flexible as well.
Robots in disguise.
@BreakonThrough
If they make one called Optimus-Prime, I just might buy it.
This kicks so much ass, you could probably play Duke Nukkem Forever on this thing!! :O
@LiveFromThe215
You mean the game which was permanently canned? Was that sarcasm i.e. This (hardware) kicks so much ass, it could run an awesome game which was cancelled?
@TareG yiiip, you got it dude!! (>^_^)-b
Great! More stickers!
@fikhl Soon they'll start to include stickers about the stickers.
I thought the current M11x already had switchable graphics on the fly?
@merovingian
I'm not getting the M11X until they drop the stupid "gamer" look, game laptops don't have a requirement to be ugly
@merovingian
It is a solution Dell/Alienware came up with...kind of like what Apple does, or Asus did with its early models...
@JeremyBenthem Pal of mine is selling me his m11x for under 4 benji's so I can't pass it up, gamer look or not. Doesn't bother me too. I want it for the good CUDA GPU so I can encode videos faster with Badaboom.
@kapanak So it gets the job done like the Optimus does as well? Then I'm fine.
@merovingian it's a manual switch, optimus is automatic
In the world of ugly big stickers, those look actually cool. DEAR INTEL: THEY DON'T HAVE TO BE WHITE TO BE SEEN.
@csnplt
didnt engadget do an article on how bad it was?
i mean, if engadget says an apple product is bad it must be bad...
but yeah, it is supposedly rather buggy, gives no user preferences and doesnt have that good graphics chips
@Luffy you guys win + 10 internets for teh funnies
Great, just what we need - more annoying stickers.
Good tech though, but enought with the stickers already...
@I like things
hey, I like things too!
@HoldenMccrotch what the heck are you talking about? Apple doesn't use optimus.
@Lopez from lopez to dez should be deleted. what a waste of space
